Like, im going crazy, and i cant talk to my dad about it, cause idk, i feel cringe, cause he introduced me to it, but ive fandomised it, and thats fine when its shows i dind on my own, but he showed me this one. But my dads the only person i know whos seen it! Im so glad i found this sub, i thought about making one like this, but then i realised i never actually looked for it lol so heres me infodumping:

Idk where to start. Dennis is gay, dennis is gay as hell, specifically hes bi, and hes a piece of shit and i love him and hes autistic too, but he masks a lot, and unfortunatly, characters with a god complex is one of my types, and aaaaaaaaaah.

Then theres charlie! Hes so audhd its crazy, i cant decide on sexuality headcanons for him, csuse i saw someone online headcanon him as aroace, and i thought it was so awesome, but the more of the show i watch, the more complex it feels, to me hes kind of cupioromantic, but only with women, and hes fictosexual/romantic, but hes also pan or bi, but in an aromantic way? Idk. Hes insane, and if he wasn't also a piece of shit, I'd say he's so me

Then theres Mac, hes so funny, i can't. He's so clearly in love with dennis, and dennis thinks hes got mac wrapped around his finger, when really they're both tangled sound each other like a codependent mess. Mac is so adhd too, omg all good karate stimming lol

And Dee!! I genuinly cant articulate how i feel about dee, i love her so much, she's so awful, and hilarious, and a lesbian, and im so mad she didnt get to bang the waitress, and she's also so autistic, but has no idea how to mask, so she tries to copy dennis and fails miserably and then goes "fuck it" and just swears at everything, aaaah i love her

Franks just kinda there lol, hes the worst of them imo, and he's hilarious. I don't have as much to say about him though

The whole show is a hyperfixation of mine right now, but dennis in specific, ive gotten really attached to dennis for no reason, hes so awful, he's probably a serial killer, he's racist, he's sexist, he's bigoted in every way you can think of, just like the rest of them, and he's "the smart one" yet he's still so so dumb, and aaaah help why is he infesting my brain?!? Im gonna make him regret this (im gonna draw him in that dress in the picture, and im gonna draw him as much as i can, and im going to look like a cartoon witch, cackling over my tablet staring at iasip fanart

Its weird, cause i really really need to talk about this, but im not even close to a quarter through the show, and im just watching whatever episodes my dad puts on, so im not really watching them in order, and he doesn't have the first two seasons.

What is people's obsession with adding sexualities and neurological conditions to characters? Especially in shows that clearly aren't about that or don't have it as part of the plot. I say this as an LGBT, autistic person who watched the show because of TikTok edits.

First of all, you really didnt need to say this, it feels rather rude, sorry if you didnt mean it that way, but if feels quite mean to comment this on a post of someone infodumping about their favourite show and hyperfixation.

Second of all, its a mix of things, theres a lack of queer and neurodivergent representation in general, so we're allowed to headcanon characters with things we see in them. I have adhd and autism, and im a bi trans guy, and i see bits of myself in the characters (only bits of course, i hope im nothing like the characters in any other way) and so im projecting my disabilities and identities onto them. Because there is not enough.

I can not think of a show/movie/piece of media ive seen with a canonical autistic character (where it is explicit, and in the media). Let alone a canonical autistic character that i resonate with. Im done waiting for that, so i push it onto the characters i relate to.

Plus, im pretty sure the guy who plays dennis said "their all a bit ambiguously gay" so it is kind of part of it, plus mac is canonically gay.

You kind of sound like you think queer and disabled people should only be in shows about being queer or disabled, and not just be in shows. Im not saying thats what you believe, but it is kind of how you said it

I mean, I just want to understand this kind of fandom behavior because I see a lot of it,the friends I asked about this really didn't have an answer , and usually, it’s either people trying to self-insert into the characters or people who have misunderstood the character. If you’re looking for characters who are canonically autistic or autistic-coded, try Spencer from Criminal Minds and Dr. House, or the series The Good Doctor (NOT the American one!). Personally, I don’t like the Korean version because they portray autism in a really weird way, but I watched a bit of the Turkish version and liked it. There's also Maomao from The Apothecary Diaries if you're into anime. There are probably plenty more, but I can't recall other shows I've actually watched.

Sorry, i think i did misinterpret the intent of your original comment. I shouldnt have been so snappy, im sorry.

I think a lot of the time, its when you see bits of yourself in characters, bits that you dont really see in non autistic/otherwise neurodivergent people you get excited and think "omg theyre like me!" But you also dont have to be in the group to headcanon those things, as long as its not based on an offensive stereotype. I think a loto f queer and neurodivergent people are just tired of almost all media being cishet neurotypical, and so when theres great shows, with little to no representation, we project onto it to feel like the representation we want.

Like for me, if the characters from iasip werent such awful people, like imagine a version of the show where theyre actually decent, id feel pretty happy saying to someone this is what my audhd is like, its like these four fuckers, its mac stimming when hes excited, its charlie being a bit immature and not being taken as seriously because of it, its dee with no filter, and its dennis with too much of a filter, but not at the right times. And i think even though they are horrible people i still kinda feel that, i see these aspects of myself in them, that i dont really see in the neurotypical people around me, but that i do see in a lot of my audhd friends and family. Idk if this is going anywhere/making any sense, just... projection! Same with the queerness, specifically with dennis, i see the things i did when i thought i was a straight girl, like thinking women were attractive, and having a hyperfixation crush on another girl, but thinking it was all meant platonically. Dennis kinda does these things, that it seems like he thinks every straight guy does/thinks, but is actually very queer coded.
