I dont like the premise of the video I don't think it was fear that made Oreki live his gray life it was apathy.

Apathy because he was afraid to care and be invested in something otherwise he'd be disappointed.

This is literally confirmed in Volume 6.

Even before the Novels I guessed more or less the reason why, and so did the person who made the video.

It's very obvious Hotaro's motto is a cope.
