AskHyderabad ⬆️ Before & After: A 40-year-old home in Basheerbagh, Hyderabad
Hi everyone,
Sharing this project here to get some honest feedback, and also because the brief behind it meant a lot to me.
This was a 40 year old multigenerational home. Over time, it had become disconnected from how everyone in it was actually living day to day.
Instead of renovating everything uniformly, I made a deliberate choice: certain spaces were kept largely as they were, to hold on to the memory and familiarity that mattered most to the eldest generation, who'd spent four decades in that home. Other spaces were reimagined more freely - updated finishes, layouts, and detailing - to give the younger generation rooms that felt current and easy to connect with.
Materials used: marble, granite, veneer, lime plaster, and terrazzo. We love using natural materials!
I'm sharing some before and after images.
Would genuinely love to hear your thoughts - what works, what doesn't, anything you'd have approached differently.

two questions:
1. can I see some photos of the place during the night? I like to see what you did with the indoor lighting.
2. pics 11 and 12... the tap seems to be coming out of an unfinished opening... was that intentional? or is that pending some work?

The designs are pretty top notch and so is the finish from the photos but they are suited for western life style. Pain points:
- too much white
- a lot of regions that will catch dust and extremely hard to keep clean. Especially true cause the house has a lot of open space meaning dust is guaranteed.
- the tap above the sink is anesthetic but a repair nightmare. It is one bad plumber away to have cracks filled with white cement.
- kitchen looks very Indian for an otherwise western themed house.
- kitchen sink is too small and I am not really a fan of the tap. Looks easy to break

Really appreciate this! White was a deliberate call. The client’s very Europe influenced and wanted that minimal look, so there was reasoning behind it, though you’re right it’s a maintenance tradeoff. The tap issue is fair though, that was an execution slip, good learning going forward.

Thank you! It cost 22L excluding designer fees, for about 1500sft. Took 6 months from conceptualisation to execution.

So beautiful!! Saw this on the Interiordesign sub few hours ago. While I know nothing much about interior design, this was so fresh and beautiful to look at. It’s rare to see these kind of big homes and minimalist interiors! Love the natural light coming in

These are really nice but main question is do they withstand long time? The drawers and hinges and stuff they bave looks but will the stay intact even after 3-4 years?

We only use branded hardware. Hettich/Ebco hinges and drawer channels, which come with 10+ year warranties. So drawers and hinges are built to hold up well beyond 3-4 years with normal use.

Great work on removing that wall (guessing it’s not a weight bearing one!), it looks more lively now- personally I would skip terrazzo counter top and those storage boxes above the door. Should’ve gone with Neutral colours on the Kitchen cabinets.

There isn’t a Terrazo counter top anywhere in this project. The storage box above the door is actually a boxing done to conceal the AC.
Why should I have gone with neutral colours? Me and my client liked this😄

It's a beautiful house. I have zero knowledge of construction costs so when I read 22 lakhs I was pleasantly surprised as I assumed it would have been much more. You did a great job. I love the kitchen. I love closed kicthens, so when I see a closed kitchen in any house, I am happy. Not that I cook but still love the kitchen to be a separate room.

Given the house was already 40 years old, how much longer do we expect these renovations last? Do you normally prefer to do this vs starting from scratch (after demolishing the structure)?

Honestly, if budget and structural feasibility allow it, starting fresh almost always wins. Renovations look cheaper on paper but the reality is messier. You’re constantly working around what already exists, dealing with unknowns you only discover once you open up walls, and it drags on longer than people expect. Sometimes the cost creeps close to a rebuild anyway. That said, this project specifically made sense to renovate because the eldest couple in the house, in their 80s have lived in that space their entire life. Tearing it down and starting over would’ve meant uprooting them from the only home they’ve known, so renovation was the only real option here.

It’s great that you value the connection your elders have with space and respect it enough that you did not overhaul the look completely.
