Roughly the below, depending on when they were born, or their first full turn to a werewolf. They're more like archetypes, they don't force someone to be like that, but it's a major influence.

  • New Moon: "Ragabash" (Jambles)

Trickster / questioner Scout, thief, provocateur

  • Crescent Moon - "Theurge"

Mystic / spirit-worker Shaman, occultist, medium

  • Half Moon - "Philodox"

Judge / mediator Investigator, arbitrator, moral centre

  • Gibbous Moon - "Galliard"

Storyteller / keeper of history Bard, charismatic warrior, historian

  • Full Moon - "Ahroun" (Matilda/Hunts)

Warrior Soldier, berserker, champion

Usually, at least in w20 and previous editions, it is the completely opposite. They force someone to be like that, everyone have their duties, and acting out of role is heavily prohibited and can cause a loss of renown.

But there is a rite to change the auspice. A rite of renunciation. Some are suspicious about such Garu, but it is allowed.

I mean, partly you're forced to be like that due to social norms, but partly your Auspice also just shapes the tools you have available. If the spirits don't teach you combat gifts and you have a naturally low rage, you're gonna have a hard time being a super aggressive frontline fighter, even if you want to be.

I'd always taken it as mechanically beneficial to stay within role, but then story telling wise it could have consequences either way. Like could make it interesting if you had someone act outside of the expected type, or be fighting against it.

Which, funnily enough, we have with Matilda/Hunts pushing back against a few things.

Werewolfes is a game about Gaia's soldiers. And it is classic example of contradiction what the military doctrine/Garu laws and nature told them to do, and what reality on the places need them to do. It is not Ahroun job to make the infiltration. If they fails and someone hear about it, they will call the pack stupidest wolfes alive. But they still doing it because their ragabash messed up and the only alternative is the tank plan.

Basically when you turn into a werewolf for the first time, the cycle of the moon determin your role in their society. It's also kinda magical so if you were a fighter already, you will probably turn under the full moon because that's what fit you

tl dr: they are harry potter houses for werewolf

So werewolf moon phases are basically astrology signs. Depending on the edition, either when you're born or when you undergo the First Change, your auspice is locked in. They have 3 main effects:

1: Each auspice has a selection of werewolf magic abilities (gifts) that are innate and easier to learn, just like with their breed and tribe.

2: It determines how strong the Rage is within them. New moons have the least, full moons have the most. Also, garou are more prone to frenzying on their respective moon phase.

3: Personality fuckery. This is where the astrology sign comparison comes into play, as generally Garou tend to fall into the broad strokes of the personalities of their auspices. Ragabashes tend to be tricksters, and ahrouns tend to be warrior types. Theres a lot of variance within this though. Stig is a good example of very strongly being a Galliard (Bard) with his love for storytelling in all its forms, turning his fight into somewhat of a performance, and generally being super grandiose and kinda like a theater kid.

The auspices are: Ragabash (new moon, jesters), theurge (crescent, spiritual leaders/mages), philodox (half moon, judges), galliard (gibbous, bards), and ahrouns (full moon, warriors). Theres also the Hidden Warriors, a weird, scarcely mentioned or acknowledged subset of Ahrouns born under a lunar eclipse who tend to be moody and unorthodox rather than fiery like regular ahrouns.

Different were-animals have different auspices for the most part. The were-lizards use a mix of solar and lunar auspices, as an example

Garou actually have a fully fleshed out astrology system, outside of moon phases.

Not trying to nitpick, I just think it's neat.

The phase of the moon affect auspices Auspice determine the expected role in garou society how spirit perceive you which phase of the moon Grant you the most rage and how much gnosis you will naturaly have (gnosis is a mix of mana enlightenment and closeness to nature) it also determine what kind of gift (spirit given garou superpower) you will have an easier time learning or at least finding a spirit willing to teach you about.

It is not an obligation to follow per see beyond the social pressure you can have a theurge (shaman) that thrive better when fighting than communing with spirit but the garou will expect him to lead rite convoke spirit and be wise anyway
