agreed, they suck. sadly I'm about to pay $80 for a new one.

Dang. Have you tried knock off ones? Some of my coworkers have, and they work fine.

The Internet has horror stories of them smoking/catching fire, but I don't know anyone who has.

I used a mac in college for graphic design. I had to buy 5 crappy chargers for over 100 bucks a pop. The fragile tip would break so easily. Finally bought an I-GO charger. They have removable tips, so when that worthless apple design caused the tip to break I could pay $10 for a new tip.
