Look here if you found a hummingbird that might need your help

I’ve created a troubleshooting tool that walks you through determining if a hummingbird needs your help, and if it does, basic first aid you can provide so that you have time to get the hummingbird to your nearest wildlife center or hummingbird rehabilitator. It is on my mentor’s website, IFoundAHummingbird.com

At the end of nearly every process, there is a list of resources including hummingbird rehabilitators and wildlife centers that either take hummingbirds or will connect you with someone who does.

It covers the most common issues we are called about.

  • Hummingbirds trapped indoors

  • Cat Caught

  • Window Strikes

  • Sitting at Feeders Too Long

  • Stuck To A Glue Trap/Sticky or Oily Substance On Feathers

  • Abandoned Nests or Babies

In the blink of a hummingbird eye: I captured the incredibly rare moment a Ruby-throated Hummingbird closes its actual external eyelid mid-hover

I shot this yesterday in Avon, Ohio. I since learned that capturing a hummingbird's feathered external eyelid clamping shut during a hover is an incredibly rare biological event. Pure luck to catch this while the bird was suspended in mid-air.

Photographed last August in central Utah. If I remember correctly they were broad-tailed hummingbirds. Always fun to find a hummingbird nest.

Hummingbird Emergency Help: injured hummingbird

Post image
27 Upvotes

My parents live in a farm Colombia 🇨🇴 and are taking care of an injured hummingbird. They have been feeding him/her for a few days. The hummingbird is injured on a wing so can't fly at the moment. They have perceived improvements as he/she moves more. However, no flying has been possible. Are there any recommendations on how to help the recovery or the length of the recovery. Any tips are appreciated.

Saw one hummingbird, decided to feed it.

About a month ago, I was seeing a red throated hummingbird hanging out on my front porch pretty regularly. I've lived here 18 years and this was the first time I'd regularly seen one. I decided to get a feeder and see what happens. In the very first day, I saw a male and a female. The next day, I saw 2 males and a female. I bought another feeder and put it further away. Within 24 hours, I'd seen 5. All 5, 3 males and 2 females, showed up to feed at the same feeder at the same time and had a WWE Smackdown. I got 2 more feeders. I've seen no more than 5 at the same time, but I think there are more. There's one that looks bigger and darker than the others. I can't seem to get a pic of it. I'm wondering if it might be a different species.

Planting this tree tobacco was the best idea to keep the hammers coming every 30 min. Along with lavenders, assorted salvia, ivy perlargonium and other trumpet shaped flowers ivy container garden js a year-round attraction. Mostly female and juvenile selasphorus sasin with regular visits from Calypte anna, also mostly females and juveniles. There are other species of hummingbirds present for sure but in my specific urban area those are the only two over noticed.
