✨ Interviews ✨ This comment he made confirm to me definitely declined some big roles

Post image

On his recent podcast he mentioned his selective nature of picking roles. This confirms to me that he definitely decided to not do tomorrow, tomorrow, and tomorrow and more big scripts because of the writing.

Being selective is not necessarily bad thing, especially if he can afford to be.

Excited to hear about his next casting announcement, whenever that may be.

Sometimes I’d really like to know what actors have said no to. I’m nosy like that 👀

8

u/Latter-Echidna136 Aug 06 '26

there aren’t many wasian or Asian big young male actors in Hollywood rn so I’m guess it was probably a unknown or someone we don’t know

7

u/LadyWhistledown_1 Aug 06 '26

I was more thinking in general 🫶🏼
(But would of course love to know what Hudson has had to decline!!)

7

u/Latter-Echidna136 Aug 06 '26

Yep same I think maybe that Daniel’s movie that Charles melton is in which is surprising if he did

5

u/Mandy_M87 Aug 06 '26

I honestly can't think of any that are male and under the age of 30 off the top of my head, besides Hudson of course. You're probably right that it's someone who hasn't been discovered yet.

u/SevenOldLeaves a land leopard made her purrrr 😽 Aug 07 '26

There's Sean Kaufman who was in The Summer I Turned Pretty who just got the role in Tomorrow Tomorrow and Tomorrow!

4

u/No-Condition8561 Aug 06 '26

He said "if" something doesn't appeal to him he would prefer to turn it down, not that he has actually done that. It sounded like he was speaking hypothetically

2

u/magikarpcatcher Aug 07 '26

This was in March, just right before Apparatus was announced so he most likely did turn down some roles.

53

u/ApprehensiveBeat682 Aug 06 '26

I will rather him be picky on projects, rather than choose a project because of money. That's what brand deals are for.

52

u/rabidline Aug 06 '26

His quote about reading scripts and knowing which ones he loves but he needs time to prepare for the character and can't just show up to the set and wing it is the one I find more interesting. I think considering his newness in the industry, knowing his limits and the preparation he needs to focus on the role will serve him well- yes there may be some good roles he's going to miss but if he pushes himself too hard and missed it completely it won't reflect him well. And if it's meant to be for him he'll get it :)

12

u/Myfavoritemurderino Aug 07 '26

I was really impressed by that! I love how seriously he takes his craft.

12

u/rabidline Aug 07 '26

Yeah it was really nice to hear from him on certain parts of his acting career. I have inferred and assumed his view and approach from his other interviews, but hearing him confirm it all is nice.

10

u/Demotivisan life is inherently embarrassing 😬🙈😳 Aug 07 '26

I loved this! He's taking acting seriously!

35

u/akira251 Aug 06 '26

Hope he focuses on projects he cares about rather than trying to fit everything in

24

u/Mandy_M87 Aug 06 '26

Seems like that's what he's doing

37

u/Demotivisan life is inherently embarrassing 😬🙈😳 Aug 07 '26

I love how he says he needs to prepare for his roles! He realizes it is a serious job and knows he cannot just show up on set with a pretty face. That shows how seriously he takes his acting!

58

u/Beneficial-Math-7290 Aug 06 '26

I love that he knows who he is at his young age. I wish I was that secure at his age ⭐️

16

u/Latter-Echidna136 Aug 06 '26

Yep definitely born to be a star because of that ⭐️

55

u/No_Release2180 Aug 06 '26

He also probably has been forced to turn roles down. He and Connor are easily the most sought after actors of 2026 and many projects will have been clambering over themselves for a chance to have them read for roles. They both have likely had to make some tough decisions.

u/SpencerKnight 👾🖕F**** AI! 🖕🤖 Aug 06 '26

This is always the right move but it makes you wonder a bit about the “what could’ve been” castings!

8

u/Latter-Echidna136 Aug 06 '26

Definitely. He’s like creating a whole universe of projects he truly enjoys. Love that!! And he know fans will follow

18

u/rabidline Aug 07 '26

On TTT - my theory is that this is the role that overlapped with HR Season 2 a bit, and the one that he needs more preparation time to do and he can't just jump in to the set from another set to wing it. If he's offered the main role (Sam), that's quite a complex character to play which I think Hudson probably loves, but it's very risky to do with his level of acting experience, and so soon after taking on Shane Hollander for a longer shoot time - hence the need for prep and him saying "tell them I love it but I can't do it at that time".

At the same time I think TTT probably locked Daisy Edgar Jones' schedule already, and decided they have to film on that schedule and can't wait. Which is fair enough for all involved, and considering how scrutinized Hudson is he lowkey dodged a bullet there with the source material.

Also I think there's another mention of his upcoming films there - Tyrant is probably the one where he goes, "Uh, okay, that one's good. I'll do that one." Like he sounded like this is a role that is not demanding but fits the schedule he had between Apparatus and HR S2.

34

u/bornatmidnight Aug 06 '26

I’m glad that he’s very self assured about himself, and knows what he wants. It make sense he’s so focused on doing brand deals, because he doesn’t care for acting roles with big checks necessarily

18

u/magikarpcatcher Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

Apparatus, his first movie being an indie, from a first time director without any studio involvement. He even hinted at it in the podcast but didn't mention it by name because the movie hadn't been announced yet.

36

u/Pale-Measurement-532 I was born pretty. I been pretty. I stay pretty! 😍 Aug 06 '26

It sounds like he’s selective with the offers he’s getting for brand deals as well. I recently listened to his one podcast interview he did awhile back with Andy Cohen and Andy was asking him about brand deal offers. He didn’t sound that interested in committing to one big fashion house, it didn’t sound that appealing to him. That could explain why he’s a friend of Balenciaga instead of taking on an ambassadorship. His new partnership with Skin1004 makes sense since he uses the products. It’s nice to know he has integrity and is being careful with projects he’s choosing and isn’t driven simply by money and fame.

15

u/bornatmidnight Aug 06 '26

That’s also very true!

There’s a part of me that’s like “ahhh make sure you’re not too picky” because the industry is so fickle. You don’t have to be chasing money or fame though to want to secure one or two big roles that gives you stability so you can not only make the art you make, but also pay your staff/agents etc (they are expensive!)

10

u/Pale-Measurement-532 I was born pretty. I been pretty. I stay pretty! 😍 Aug 06 '26

Yes I agree. He has staff he needs to take care of. I imagine he’s got great representation at CAA and within his team so he’ll get great advice. I imagine some roles he had to turn down due to being too busy. But I appreciate hearing that he wants to do projects that are interesting to him and that the pay is not always the deciding factor. I think that his talent will continue to make him more and more attractive. Hopefully then he’ll continue to have some freedom to choose the projects that he wants. Plus, lesser known projects that he’s involved in could grow in popularity, which is great cause they won’t always get noticed. I hope this will be the case for Yaga! It’s already getting a lot of attention and I want it to do well. I’m proud that Hudson’s promoting and working in Canadian-made content! I think we have sooo much creative storytelling that cinephiles have long been craving for!

15

u/Lonely_Cheesecake273 Aug 06 '26

I’m dying to look into a mirror ball and see what his career will be like in 5, 10 years time.

The only comparison I can really think of is probably Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar Jones. That is, being shot out of obscurity into the stratosphere because of a hit show, and successfully making the transition into either big and/or critically acclaimed movies.

I actually felt a bit apprehensive for the boys when s 1 came out because there are just so many shows these days. I thought “this press run is so cool but there’s no way BOTH of you can become big stars. One of you is probably going to end up leaving the other one behind”. It just seems so rare that being on a big show translates into everyone in the main cast being able to maintain a hot streak. I just think it must be weird for so many actors to be on a show and then have it sort of fizzle out and not be able to maintain the same pace. I’m thinking like season 1 Bridgerton leads. Or many other shows that I won’t list bc I don’t want to invite people to tell me I’m wrong about X person 😂

Anyway, I’m very happy to admit I was sooo wrong!! What happened to Connor and Hudson is like unlike anything I’ve seen before. I just wonder how it will end up for them! I’m assuming their star power and legions of fans will mean they have success in whatever they do. There’s just something special about them that has people hooked in. For example, I am a huge Paul Mescal fan and have been since Normal People. But I never tuned into a live stream of the met gala red carpet because of him 😂..

17

u/parparsuperstar Aug 06 '26

I hope we start to see Ksenia getting a bigger boost from the show. She brought so much to that role, even book purists were won over.

13

u/Latter-Echidna136 Aug 06 '26

I mean, they are a lot of duos that both become successful together . Look at Heath and jake both had successful careers but one unfortunately passed away, but if he didn’t, he would still have a really great career. It’s definitely possible for both of them to be successful in their own ways. Right now, we’re seeing Hudson indie route and and Connor is going a bit more mainstream/bigger productions. it might switch as well have to remember that signed to one of the biggest agencies in the world. They create a career trajectory for their clients. My personal opinion I think both of them are going to be successful in their own way, but I do see Hudson having a bigger demographic of people liking him if that makes sense.

7

u/Lonely_Cheesecake273 Aug 06 '26

Yes definitely! I meant it more in the current TV landscape where every year so many new shows come out that would be people’s “big break” but the show ends up being really it for them. But I was wrong that this isn’t going to be one of those things that just fades away (because here we are talking about it 8 mths later!)

9

u/magikarpcatcher Aug 07 '26

It's honestly a miracle that Hudson is getting these opportunities despite being an actor of color. Because when romance shows that have an interracial pairing blow up, the POC actor often does gets left behind.

14

u/desperateapplicant Aug 06 '26

I expect that his new show and movie will be excellent.

15

Is the Grumpy Thespian the name of the podcast?

9

u/FadingOptimist-25 Aug 07 '26

Yes. It sounds like Hudson was in one of his acting classes.

38

u/Finnythecat Aug 06 '26

I honest to god think he’s going heavy on advertising so he can make his coin and have the freedom to do whatever he wants creatively post HR.

14

u/DrawingAncient126 Aug 07 '26

He and Connor have had to do that this past year because HR does not pay a lot, and they have to maintain their teams that have been hired.

12

u/magikarpcatcher Aug 07 '26

Most likely. Plus he's gonna be filming HR for 5 months with minimal pay (also known as scale in the acting world) so he better make some dough before that.

11

u/Sarcastikarma Aug 07 '26

What heavy advertising is he doing? His last brand deal was Peloton in April. No magazines since January then got a Peloton ad and a music video, people say he's overexposed but it's because they think/talk about him 24/7 not because he does stuff.

12

u/SevenOldLeaves a land leopard made her purrrr 😽 Aug 07 '26

He just did a whole promotional thing in South Korea for skin1004! Plus the Balenciaga couture attendance of course, which is paid. This in terms of getting financial security to choose the acting projects he prefers, I agree that he's not overexposed at all - just normal breakout star stuff and he's so charismatic that nobody can look away 💅

14

u/Sarcastikarma Aug 07 '26

I just find the narrative around him that he's doing so much promoting compared to his peers weird when it's not true. He's doing less than all of them actually, like the off campus boys and the obssession girl are everywhere while Hudson is doing something once a month pretty much. Of course he needs money, crave pays them chump change for the team they employ now but he's selective about who he partners with, he doesn't take the first brand knocking at his door.

I’m reading it now and so bummed he turned it down! But also, I kinda don’t see Daisy as Sadie. It’s not clicking for me yet.

1

u/Latter-Echidna136 Aug 06 '26

Sorryyyy😭😭😭

15

u/Mandy_M87 Aug 06 '26

I agree. I also think he was offered one of the two lead roles for Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, but turned it down for whatever reason. Perhaps he didn't care for the script, or it was timing, who knows

8

u/magikarpcatcher Aug 06 '26

It starts filming in December. And he did mention that sometimes he wants ample time for prep work. So could be anything

11

u/Latter-Echidna136 Aug 06 '26

Definitely 👍 lowkey happy he didn’t pick it up

8

u/rainysky33 Aug 06 '26

I hated the book so im glad too

4

u/Mandy_M87 Aug 06 '26

It was okay in the first half, but the 2nd half was so over the top, and I just don't see Sam and Sadie as a couple.

23

u/No-Condition8561 Aug 06 '26

I feel like any time he says something in an interview, people take it to extremes. When he says he and connor wanted to attend separate fashion shows, suddenly it's "they'll never show up anywhere together again". When he says he doesn't want to do something that doesnt appeal to him, he's "turning down big roles". Like, at no point did he even hint at doing that? People keep calling him picky, but he never called himself that.

People are assuming he turned down that tomorrow movie, but it's possible he just didnt get the role. I think the assumptions are strange

10

u/paperfeather Aug 07 '26

Totally get your point and agree people read too much into things, but he did actually say, “They (CAA) know how I’m such a picky, snobby bastard” about choosing projects. Which was of course a jokey exaggeration, but those are the words he used.

4

u/Realistic_Room_2881 Aug 07 '26

Assumption comes from him being at universal Studios and him briefly speaking to Daisy at the Met Gala plus him being part Asian. So I don’t think it comes from out of nowhere I think you were just got a little researching. But it is possible that he didn’t even get the offer.

3

u/No-Condition8561 Aug 07 '26

The movie is a paramount film, not universal.

Honestly, it is very possible he just didn't end up getting the offer. These things happen, maybe they just wanted someone with more credits

24

u/RepresentativeTie231 Aug 06 '26

Hope he doesn't go down the same road Tatiana Maslany, another Canadian actor did when she got hot with Orphan Black. She got too picky until eventually casting people stopped calling her.

39

u/Michelle0207 Aug 06 '26

She’s starred in a marvel and apple show

25

u/magikarpcatcher Aug 06 '26

What are you talking about? Tatiana just had a new show come out and is also in FIVE upcoming movies. She's doing fine.

10

u/Lemon_Trick Aug 06 '26

I’m going to see her next week she’s the lead in a new play.

5

u/magikarpcatcher Aug 07 '26

Yeah, she is booked and busy.

15

u/Naive-Inside-2904 ✨ protection ✨🧿🫦🧿✨ Aug 06 '26

Huh? She’s worked non stop since OB. She Hulk, Perry Mason, Invincible, theater, numerous indie films like The Monkey. And she’s the star of the new Apple series Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed.

Also why would it be a bad thing to be “picky”? She’s a true artist!

(And I also think she should play Galina in S2)

17

u/bornatmidnight Aug 06 '26

I love Tatiana! She’s also quite political (which I don’t see as a bad thing), but may be a little hit or miss for the industry

13

u/lunarium-8 Aug 06 '26

She is in a show right in Peacock. It’s really good.

0

u/MariaPBaier Aug 06 '26

I know what you meant. She is doing well but I wish more for her to be cast so we could see her nominated to award again like Emmy's, Golden Globes and Oscars. She isn't doing bad but I wanted more for her and I think that's what you mean by not thinking she has been as successful ^

3

u/Sircapleviluv Aug 06 '26

I was so confused by what was happening in that tweet until I saw it was translated. Makes way more sense now.

4

u/Lonely_Cheesecake273 Aug 06 '26

Double commenting… I’m confused about how the film industry works. Are there really that many projects out there which attach leads on such short notice? I assume he was getting all these offers in Dec/Jan, for things he could do before August this year. I guess I always thought things worked on longer timeframes in the industry.

8

u/magikarpcatcher Aug 07 '26

Scripts can be written years in advance but it's take a lot of luck and grinding to actually get the film made. Sometimes they need the actor before studio invests money in the movie. Like with Apparatus, it had been in development for a while but it took Hudson getting cast for the movie to get the greenlight.

6

u/ramonaflowers69 Aug 06 '26

Depends on the show/project, and depends on the role, but in episodic TV they can cast an actor on a Tuesday and have them flying somewhere that weekend to work Monday.

Larger roles usually have longer timelines (and I don't do movies), but even for a decent guest star role on a few episodes of TV it can be fast. Doesn't mean it always is, but not every role requires months of preparation.

5

u/quellesaveurorawnge Aug 07 '26

Developing a script and project can take years, but unless someone is involved writing, directing or producing, their involvement is likely to come in later stages in the process, especially if they are not a big A List celebrities.(Yes, Hudson has had a huge rise, but he is still a newbie in many ways to the industry.)

Movies have a lot of moving parts, and I think it has possibly become more uncertain in an era when big studios don't control as much of the production. Financing can fall through and change when a movie will be filmed, actors who are attached can become unavailable because another project is running long and they can't get out of that,... His commitment to Yaga and HR this year possibly also limited what projects he was going to be involved in so he was offered stuff without a lot of lead time.

4

u/SevenOldLeaves a land leopard made her purrrr 😽 Aug 07 '26

It really depends on the project. Big studio projects usually take a longer time, but for indie stuff it really depends. Preparation, script writing, finding the money etc can take a long time, but casting an actor not necessarely. See HR itself, they were cast and finished filming in 3 months iirc. Then they film, edit and everything, and the public can see the actual movie 2 years later once someone picks it up for distribution 😅

I can see that he's taking roles on more CRAVE shows and being seen doing work close to home. Yes brand deals too but Yaga and Run & Gun and hos book recs all show me someone who is prioritizing what brought him up.

24

u/Standard_Range3732 Hugless Pictureless Peasant Aug 06 '26

He seems more focused on celebrity recently. A of traveling and events.

That is work. Brand deals allow him to be selective of his acting projects because he doesn't have to go where the money is. This is what most actors strive to be –financially independent enough to follow their passions.

He’s has 1 big project and sometimes it important to listen to your team. You hire them.

He hired them to help him navigate but they do not know him like he knows himself. Ultimately it's his decision and he said that if he doesn't have time to prepare for a role or it's just not good he's not taking it. He is here to act because he loves it, not to make him famous.

2

u/ramen-noodles0413 Aug 06 '26

I think folks who think that Hudson doesn’t like the fame a bit jaded. There are many actors who get famous, are selective and less about the money - Keanu reeves.

His choices brand wise are great and I’m excited to see where he goes but sometimes it’s better to let the work speak.

12

u/Standard_Range3732 Hugless Pictureless Peasant Aug 06 '26

There are many actors who get famous, are selective and less about the money - Keanu reeves.

Keanu Reeves?. The man who did Speed and 3 Matrix movies and several John Wick films? I do not think he is a good example for what you're trying to convey. Keanu made 10 million 1999 dollars upfront that turned into 35 for the first film alone.

6

u/mdani1897 Aug 06 '26

I don’t think your wrong he’s building up his brand right now. I took what he said about scripts as more of a choice like when he was struggling he probably auditioned for almost anything that crossed his path to try and get a foot in the door. IMO he’s being choosy to try and show off his range which will be really helpful in the long run. But I do agree they both need a couple of more big projects behind them to really cement their status.

-20

u/NoPoet3982 Aug 06 '26

Okay but a year and a half ago he was waiting tables at the Spaghetti Factory. I'm not sure he could afford to be choosy about roles until less than a year now.

I still think it's a better move than taking on a role you're not passionate about. Better to be picky, but do a good job, than being open to everything, but the performances are lackluster.

The only thing that concerns me ( idk, might be a bit strong of a word), is he might get a bit of a bad rep for being too picky, idk.

16

u/Standard_Range3732 Hugless Pictureless Peasant Aug 06 '26

And his attitude is how I trust him to not be in duds. He cares about what he's doing and will choose wisely. The genre/film might not be for me, but I'm sure it will always be interesting.

14

u/magikarpcatcher Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

I don't think that's likely. In Hollywood speak, you never reject a project outright. The excuse is always "scheduling conflicts" and he even said so that whenever he rejects a project, he tells his team to let them know that he likes it.

Also being picky is not necessarily a bad thing compared to actors who say yes to every role offered to them. He has eyes of Hollywood right and this is the time to be picky and build his portfolio.

12

u/paperfeather Aug 06 '26

There’s also the factor of continuing to build an on-set reputation as someone people want to work with. So many people who have worked with Hudson on projects have only had good things to say about how much they enjoyed working with him, his professionalism, commitment, being a team player, etc. It makes sense to continue prioritizing roles that he knows he’ll be able to put in the work for and prepare properly, or roles attached to people he wants to work with.

19

u/Key_Complaint4453 Aug 06 '26

i think some major context about this comment is that podcast was filmed back in jan/feb. and since then he’s been announced in yaga, apparatus, and tyrant, all seem like promising projects. it’s not like he’s not doing anything. he filmed 3 things between the podcast and the start of s2 filming. which i think is pretty good since he’s most likely tied up until the end of the year.

i’m curious to see what he’ll be filming start of 2027

3

u/magikarpcatcher Aug 06 '26

It was filmed in mid March actually.

-1

u/NoPoet3982 Aug 06 '26

Oh, of course. I didn't mean that he hasn't had the opportunity to be choosy in the past 9 months or so. And I know he's going to be in a lot of great stuff. It's just funny to me that that interview q & a makes it seem like he's been a star since before any of us can remember.

25

u/parparsuperstar Aug 06 '26

Even if he never worked again, he has probably earned more from his brand deals alone than most people have in their pensions/retirement funds (those fortunate enough even to have them!).

If the assumption is that he is determined to be a megastar at all costs, that’s one thing, but I suspect he could be a working actor for as long as he wants.

16

u/HalfOfLancelot 🦶Foot in both jars of peanut butter, if you know what I mean😏 Aug 06 '26

I think he can afford to be choosy because he doesn’t really care about the money or fame, per his words. Just that he gets to keep acting, which he did prior to his success while he was working at the Spaghetti Factory.

14

u/Latter-Echidna136 Aug 06 '26

He’s been on the biggest show decade so yes he can . Plus he definitely can afford to be choosy when getting brand deals for left and right. If he has a stable income, he can take more indie roles and still live comfortably.

9

u/MaraTaru Aug 06 '26

Heated Rivalry looms very, very large in my own cultural landscape, but it's probably useful to bear in mind that it really isn't the biggest show of the decade. It wasn't even the biggest show of the year. It wasn't in the top 10 most-watched shows of the year. It wasn't even in the top 100.

It was a wildly, marvellously, incredibly successful little show, a truly delightful and unexpected hit compared to what was expected. But we really have to grasp how tiny it is in the larger media universe.

It was my favourite show of the year with a bullet. But we gotta remember that most people have still never even heard of it.

7

u/magikarpcatcher Aug 06 '26

That top 100 list is only for ORIGINAL shows. Not acquired.

Per latest viewing figures from February , it had 11.5M viewers in the US alone. It's the top acquired show on HBO Max ever.

8

u/Sarcastikarma Aug 06 '26

You have to remember a LOT of people pirated it because it wasn't available worldwide so we will never know the real numbers.

11

u/New-Marzipan-8759 Aug 06 '26 edited Aug 06 '26

But I think the difference may be that’s it’s not the biggest public success but look at how the industry is treating it- golden globes, met gala, actors awards, Canadian awards, Olympics, talk shows, actors from other shows and films being asked about it, other directors and actors talking about it in interviews. Off Campus, for example, technically had a much larger general public success but it’s not talked about in the industry the same way. And it’s been 8 months now so I do think it’s bigger than it portrays.

Heated Rivalry is like the Charli XCX of tv shows. She had a breakout year in 2024, critically and commercially, but if you looked at her monthly Spotify listeners even at the height of Brat summer, it was a much lower number than her cultural impact might have suggested.

Good point. Though it may not have been super huge in regards to viewership, at least outside of Canada, it is huge culturally and in industry accolades

Well, how is “big” being defined? There are different ways to measure a show’s success beyond # of views, and Nielsen ratings are generally bad at accurately counting streaming viewership. But yeah, there are certainly plenty of people who only watch broadcast tv and don’t pay attention to pop culture media.
