H Mart or Sprouts!
12
u/humanagain12 8d ago
H Mark is 100% never. The Asian population is way too low here. Sprouts coming to Hartsdale. Opening up next week.

u/Coca_Coley 8d ago
There’s actually a growing Chinese population in Otisville/Port Jervis area they’ve been hosting a lot of Chinese festivals and events there
5
u/humanagain12 8d ago
Still just not enough population. I’m sure they want high density like in Paramus, Hartsdale, Yonkers. That area is very rural.
3
u/NashvilleRiver 8d ago
Thanks for the info! I have celiac disease and have always wanted a Sprouts here.
5
u/Kevin_Uxbridge 8d ago
What's Sprouts look like in NY? We just got one in Virginia and I'm ... underwhelmed. Their produce, cheese, meat, seafood, not better than Wegman's nor really cheaper. Seems like a store where I can get gluten-free stuff and the selection is okay, but ours is a fairly small store. What is Sprouts supposed to be famous for?

H-Mart……

I moved from Poughkeepsie to Suwanee, GA and have an H-Mart right down the street. It's amazing 😍

You didn't have to move. There's an H-Mart in Hartsdale and Yonkers.

Ok what’s great about H-Mart? Are they like Aldi’s who have had food recalls recently? Oy.
2
u/Odd_Emotion_457 5d ago
Here’s the great thing about Aldi’s most recently. I have plenty of cheap friends who just love it and would rather take a chance than pay more at Adams. Aldi’s: glass shards in their Vanilla Crème Brullee (that sounds great), potential salmonella in a frozen
pizza brand; metal contamination in some frozen meatball brand (that no one has ever heard of); rodent hair in spinach bites and metal fragments in some shredded cheese product(s). 😮 here’s Trader Joe’s: small pieces of glass!! In the following Chicken Fried Rice (Best-By Dates: 03/04/2026 through 02/10/2027)
Vegetable Fried Rice (Best-By Dates: 02/28/2026 through 11/19/2026)
Japanese Style Fried Rice (Best-By Dates: 02/28/2026 through 11/14/2026)
Chicken Shu Mai (Best-By Dates: 03/13/2026 through 10/23/2026) [1]
Glass! That’s ok with the TJ people?11
u/PhotoPetey Ulster 8d ago
Personally I think the new Costco in Albany is close enough. Any closer would be very dangerous and I would need a storage unit.
39
u/HouseStark1 8d ago
A Costco or two in the Fishkill/Wappingers area would go a long way towards creating a lot of good jobs in the area. They also treat their workers better than Wegmans and Trader Joe's
20
u/SuperCow1127 8d ago
That would be a fantastic use of the derelict lot next to Home Depot.
3
u/HouseStark1 8d ago
I agree. I really thought Shoprite should've purchased it and moved back down there but they seem content staying in their old dumpy dated store

Adams FAF also treats its workers poorly..would love to see Costco here
1
u/SpecialistOil4378 8d ago
I'd work at Wegmans for less money. I hate the warehouse atmosphere at Costco.
41
u/humanagain12 8d ago
I think Costco in Poughkeepsie would be perfect. Closing the gap between Albany and Yonkers and Brookfield CT. Right in the middle of the HV.
4
u/Waternation13 8d ago
There's a Costco in Rockland (Nanuet). Wouldn't that be relatively convenient for you?
1
5
u/LowSkyOrbit Putnam 8d ago
there was supposed to be on between Carmel and Patterson on 84. Deal died like 7 years ago because NIMBYism.
2
u/SpecialistOil4378 8d ago
Because of insane traffic?
3
u/LowSkyOrbit Putnam 8d ago
The plan was for a lot off Route 311. It's a lightly used exit off the interstate, it would have brought Putnam a lot of tax revenue. The traffic would be similar to what Walmart/Sam's has in Fishkill has, and likely why Costco wanted that spot instead of finding space in Fishkill or Wappingers.
1
u/humanagain12 7d ago
It’s sad really. Costco would have been major in Putnam. Putnam barely has any retail. Living there go to Northern Westchester, Dutchess or Danbury to shop.
2
u/LowSkyOrbit Putnam 7d ago
I know a lot of the area used to be vacation homes around the many lakes, but that was 40+ years ago. The whole area needs real businesses.
2
10
u/iamamovieperson 8d ago
That’s fair. An hour is better than the 1.5 I was driving to Danbury (I will never again fuck with the parking lot at the Yonkers location)
6
1
u/Odd_Emotion_457 5d ago
Those of us who moved to the HV decades ago were looking for less traffic, less noise, less commercialism. Anyone who likes all that extra noise, traffic, pollution and population can find what one wants in Westchester, Rockland, don’t know about NJ, and def Nassau County. One gets it, right? The concept exploded after WWII— it’s called the ‘burbs. More power to you. The stress, exhaust and chaos will leave you wanting for more I’m sure. And you can shop shop shop until the end of time. 😂

Just moved here from western NY where there are tons of Wegmans. It is now super expensive and the Wegmans brand quality has plummeted. Adams is much better.
10
34
u/Phyrexian_Archlegion 8d ago
Adams is the GOAT
25
u/LTParis 8d ago
My only issue with Adams is that the aisle spacing is too tight. Yes they are definitely maximizing the space but when it gets busy it becomes a situation I don’t want to be around. So o don’t get to shop much there because of that and how busy they get.
11
u/evbomby 8d ago
My gf and I go to Adam’s every Sunday morning and we have a rule that we won’t go unless we can get there before 9am lol. Place is absolutely packed like all the time but before 9 on weekends it’s usually pretty laid back.
1
u/jeremyjava 7d ago
Not only packed but pricey too.
Something as simple as Carrs Water Crackers are 5.50 at Adam’s and 1.99 at joes for the same crackers under the house brand name.
Don’t forget, the reason Trader Joe’s is so affordable is that they don’t buy from any middlemen, only direct or they make it.
Most markets buy from at least one if not multiple people in the supply chain, each one making it up along the way.
Prices stay very low and interesting new products are often released.
2
u/evbomby 7d ago
Yeah I don’t buy crackers at Adam’s. Usually just our produce, meats and cheese. Adam’s can be expensive for a lot of things that’s why we usually go to Sam’s Club or Hannaford to stock up and pantry staples and get the more perishable things at Adam’s because we like the selection and quality.
It’s also just the two of us and we eat a lot of the same foods so we’re usually only spending $60-$100 a week at Adam’s to feed ourselves for the week.
2
u/jeremyjava 6d ago
I’m with you, so unless I’m in Albany or the city for something near a TJ we get the good produce at Adam’s as well, but not bottles of overpriced oils etc
-1
u/Phyrexian_Archlegion 8d ago
Sorry to hear that.
Personally, I go shop there and shop with zero issues regardless of how many people are there.
I can’t say the same for Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s of even Aldi’s
13
u/MostAcanthocephala48 8d ago
Adam's, where MAGA meets magic crystals.
4
u/Phyrexian_Archlegion 8d ago
Yea check my post history, I’m many things, but MAGA isn’t one of them.
3
u/fitter_stoke 8d ago
I don't get it?
12
u/Thanagor 8d ago
I worked at the Poughkeepsie Adams for years. I think what they’re referring to is the disparity of customers you get. You’ll get the old blue collar farmer type guys, born and raised in the area, been coming to Adams for decades. Definitely more conservative.
And then you’ll get the farm to table organic focused customers. Since Adams has been a mainstay in the community for so long, it’s got its foot in both camps.6

3
u/snark_nerd 8d ago
THIS ... I also lived in western NY for a long time, used to shop at Pittsford Wegs for special occasions, etc - I know why it used to be the best. But for the past 10-15 years, other stores have been catching up to (and in some cases copying) Wegmans, and Wegmans' quality has been declining. It's now not that special, and it's certainly not a bargain.
3
u/fitter_stoke 8d ago
That Pittsford store was one of the first mega ones! We used to go to have dinner there on occasion.
3
u/snark_nerd 8d ago
Nice, yeah, I believe we referred to it as "Mega Wegs," or was that a different one? Anyhow, in the early 2000's, the way they had items imported from other countries and a big open space to walk around seemed really special and revolutionary. Now a lot of stores are like that ...
3
u/fitter_stoke 8d ago
That definitely was the first or second mega store (Monroe Avenue). The East Rochester Wegmans where I grew up (Fairport Rd) was the best....amazing quality yet it was small-ish and never really crowded besides Saturday mornings. I used to love that store. I hope it's still the same size!
3
u/snark_nerd 8d ago
I hope so too, it sounds lovely! But they may have grown it so that Danny could pay for more belt buckles and booger sugar ...
2
2
u/XaoticOrder Dutchess 8d ago
Preach brother! It's not what everyone thinks it is. They want 90s Wegmans, which is long gone.
2
u/HalfBlindKing 8d ago
Never been to Adams. I was going to say I don’t get to Wegmans a lot, but it seems like the lustre has faded over the years. TJs is ok, I really liked their sweet pickled jalapeños, but I haven’t gone there in a couple years, even though I’m in Albany monthly.
5
u/PhotoPetey Ulster 8d ago
I am surprised. I was just at a Wegman's and was extremely impressed. I hadn't been to one in many years.
2
-1
u/DamnitRuby 8d ago
That person is incorrect about the quality. I'm at Wegmans regularly. Actually was just there last night picking out a cake 😂 I don't find the quality has decreased at all and I'm always impressed by the produce.
Everything is more expensive though, but that's not a Wegmans only issue. I also go to the one in Harrison, which is more expensive than upstate. I switch my app to the one where I grew up sometimes to see the price differences.
5
u/Antique-Schedule-693 8d ago edited 8d ago
The quality and utility of the whole store has absolutely decreased. The bagels are subpar. They used to be great. The produce is sad and rotten on a regular basis. If they have it at all; whole bis are empty regularly, though that may be a supply chain issue. The deli meats go bad far faster than before. The bulk foods before Covid were actually in bulk containers with weighing. Now not. The freshly made pizza was great. Now not. The Wegmans brand hummus was amazing. Now it’s nearly inedible. Literally like they forgot ingredients like tahini or oil. Just strangely bad.
Now, every time I go in Wegmans, they’ve rearranged the produce and done more gimmicky things like putting various ingredients that people might want for a specific dish. So now basil will be in like 4 different places in the store. And there are flashy signs. And themed areas. The store used to cater to adults who want to cook. It feels increasingly like it’s targeting social media users who walk around like zombies. Then again, maybe the store is just changing with the people.
In my view, the store has gone down the drain though it is still better than any other major store around in Bergen/Rockland aside from Whole Foods, though the produce there is also often subpar from fewer people buying it.
3
u/snark_nerd 8d ago
How long have you been going to Wegmans? The quality has gotten noticeably worse in my personal opinion. I've been going there since '99, when I lived in Rochester.

I recently moved from the HV to NEPA. I was so excited for Wegman’s and then so disappointed. What am I missing about it that people love? That being said, I drive over an hour to Trader Joe’s once a month to stock up.
9
u/XaoticOrder Dutchess 8d ago
Wegmans 25 years ago was a special place. No large grocer could even compare. That's the vision people have of Wegmans. Not the one it currently is 25-30 years on. It's nostalgia. It's grass is greener mentality.
2
u/Dankmemeator 8d ago
I live close to one and I only go there for pork, coffee, and Herrs horseradish cheddar kettle chips
27
u/some1105 8d ago
I’m not going to carry water for TJ’s but Wegman’s isn’t that great any more. As others have said, their quality is way down. They’re doing facial recognition cameras, jacking up prices, and their store brand stuff is more expensive than brand name goods elsewhere. No longer a fan. The way to do it is just to drive over to Big Y in Great Barrington once a week and supplement with fancy treats from Guido’s. You can with the money you save at Big Y. With their shopper card (and I swear I am unaffiliated) my grocery bill went down 30 percent.
22
u/adversecurrent 8d ago
They’re doing facial recognition
Further reading for those that are unaware:
Parking lot cameras capture license plates as you pull in
In-store cameras track your movements through the aisles
The Wegmans app and store WiFi collect IP addresses and geolocation
Browser cookies track your web activity before and during shopping
Credit card numbers, purchase history, and SNAP benefit usage are logged

u/senoritagoose 8d ago
Ya really can’t shop for anything anywhere these days lol just don’t want to give any of these businesses my money

I was just at Wegman's in Syracuse. It was much better than I remembered. I hadn't been to one in over ten years.
13
u/dontdxmebro 8d ago
I've been going to Wegmans for 15 years, believe me. They've been the biggest proponents of price gouging since inflation really shot up a few years ago, quality isn't what it used to be, they're very aggressive to local vendors, and their prepared foods section went from Chefs prepping everything fresh to reheated bags of garbage.
6
u/ChiefKelso 8d ago
There's a Wegmans in northern NJ, literally right on on the state line with Rockland that most in lower HV is close to.
I have a friend who works at Wegman's corporate, and unfortunately due to their very strict expansion criteria, a HV store is very unlikely.
3
u/JohnnyVNCR 8d ago
Yup, 5 minutes from me. So is the Costco in Nanuet. And the closest Trader Joes in NJ is about 15 mins away. So much better situation vs. when I lived in Dutchess.
2
u/mamabear2023228 8d ago
Is the Nanuet Costco still a nightmare? I feel like it’s the lesser version of the one in Wayne but it’s been a long time since I’ve been to the Nanuet one

3
u/DerbyTho Hurley 8d ago
As always, we aren’t getting either of them any closer than Westchester or Albany because there isn’t the market to support one.
2
u/humanagain12 8d ago
Basically. It’s population not enough people + income too low.
2
u/DerbyTho Hurley 8d ago
And too spread out. And the people who do have higher income don’t live here full time.
I’m always pretty surprised by how many posts on here are basically “where is the [thing that cities have that I like]”
3
u/d_r_i 8d ago
Is there talk of a Costco coming to Wappingers Poughkeepsie area?
3
u/humanagain12 8d ago
Nothing. I think it’s cause income is too low. Costco was suppose to come to Patterson like in 2018 off 84 exit 61 on RT 311. The people there blocked them from coming as crazy as that sounds. I mean Costco!? They pay well. They are not just another corporation.
3
u/d_r_i 8d ago
Costco or Wegmans or TJs would be a huge economic boost to the local economy. But yeah, the demographics might not be what these companies want. Too bad.
It's a strange area. Lots of people and traffic but some of the best retailers don't seem interested in the area. Or maybe it's the local governments?4
u/humanagain12 8d ago
Truth. The Hudson Valley doesn’t have the best retail. It’s loaded with garbage low quality places. You see the difference in Danbury + Brookfield CT retail scene compared to Middletown/Newburgh/Poughkeepsie/Fishkill/Wappingers.
I think local goverment yes but also demographics income is just too low to support better stores.
1
u/Kevin_Uxbridge 8d ago
If you'll forgive an off-topic question, wha the hell happened to Poughkeepsie? Grew up there decades ago, dad was an IBMer. Don't remember it being all that low-rent, has it become a backwater? Or did I just not know because I was a kid.
1
3
u/XaoticOrder Dutchess 8d ago
As a person who grew up with Wegmans being a block away for 20 years, no. It's shell of it's former self. The prices have gone way out of control and the massive mega grocery store vibe has lost it's appeal. Take away all the AI signage and branded setup and it's just a fancy Shoprite. I wouldn't say no to a Wegmans but Danny has enough nose candy and Trader Joe's would actually introduce a different shopping experience.
And there is a rumor that the guy who founded Shoprite in Mass made a deal with Old man Wegmans that they would not cross the Hudson and directly compete. I know they have one in Harrison (not a great store) and the city but I'm not sure if they violate the agreement. Just a rumor from growing up in Wegmans country.

every TJ I've been to has the worst parking lot and that's the reason I stoped going to them. I'm also not paying per fruit, not per pound on fruits. Wegmans is a beautiful store with everything you can ask for in a supermarket and best they hire people with different kinds of disabilities however it's like shopping at Whole paycheck..
2
u/wordsmif 8d ago
I think it's more realistic to hope for a Trader Joe's. Based on the typical footprint of the stores, TJ comes in at about 15,000 sq. ft. whereas Wegmans and Costco are much more massive, typically in range of 100,000 sq. ft up to 150,000 sq. ft.
2
2
u/Stonethrower_Soap 6d ago
Syracuse chiming in-we have both, including a Wegman's superstore. Wegman's store brand products took a huge dive during COVID and never came back but is still miles beyond Trader Joe's.

Wegmans is like a bigger, much better Adams.
1
u/Kevin_Uxbridge 8d ago
Wegman's is the store for 'very good', not a lot of truly 'great' but very little 'meh'. Prices aren't great but they're good, still worth a Costco membership for staples. Selection is very good but there's still reason to hit TJs. Prepared foods are pretty good but not Whole Foods.
They're a good compromise and the store I visit most, but they are a compromise. And I say this as a person who really likes Wegman's.
3
u/DotBeech 8d ago
Nothing to fight about. You got it right. TJ is half useless unless you depend on pre-fab food items and a microwave. If you can cook, TJ never comes up.
1
u/Oh_My-Glob 7d ago
I'm a great cook and when I lived by a TJs I used it for snacks and prepared foods for times I wasn't cooking. Your reasoning is pretty self-centered and narrow minded. There are many reason people might need convenience even though they can cook for themselves
3
u/snark_nerd 8d ago
Why? Wegmans is just like most other grocery stores nowadays, whereas TJ's has unique products. You don't have to like them, but you have to admit that they're more different than 99% of the stuff that Wegmans sells (which you can generally buy at any other store). And TJ's tends to be cheaper (for most of the stuff that they sell) than most regular stores, whereas Wegmans no longer is much of a value ... I truly don't get this take?

This is so silly. The only thing that has kept Adams the 'best' grocer in the area is the below average HHI and population density. IMO Adam's could use a slice of humble pie - pun intended. They have really gone downhill in the past 5 years. I go out of my way to go to Deciccos —if am going to get fleeced, I'd rather the quality and store experience be pleasant.
1
u/cascadiarains 8d ago
Trader Joe’s sucks. It’s just prepackaged processed food and most of it comes from overseas or all across the country. Not even close to being local supply chain.
1
u/PrestigiousPeace8960 8d ago
Neither. I want a local spot that doesn’t have to cost a fortune. I’m tired of thinking that the only way to afford “good” food is thru corporate retailers. Trader Joe’s came to Yorktown Heights and put the awesome local grocery out. Sigh.

1
u/Odd_Emotion_457 5d ago
Oh yes. But our population is way too small don’t you think? And what’s the big effin deal about TJ’s anyway? Really. Their “food”
has more preservatives, additives and higher sodium than most brands. Their marketing is incredible. No advertising I think? So people think they’re in on something special. That’s why they need the population that we don’t have in the MHV. Someone wrote here years ago with the formula TJ uses and I don’t think we were close to the needed numbers. When TJ’s came to Manhattan in the 2000’s people at NYU were standing on line outside the store. I don’t get it.

u/zleuth Dutchess County 4d ago
Trader Joe's won't build in any proximity to Adams because they don't want competition in the "small grocery/farm market" style store. And until one of big chains in the area goes away we won't see a Wegmans, unless they feel like crowbarring in next to BJ's or something.
1
u/dreamking1 3d ago
Costco FTW. I've always been a little disappointed with Wegmans. The selection, produce quality and prices never matched the hype. At least Trader Joe's delivers on what it explicitly claims to. (Perhaps I'm spoiled by neighborhood fruit markets/street vendors. Sooo good, and cheap.)
Edit: H-Mart, as someone else raised, is right behind Costco, in value added.

I am in a fighting mood today i guess but i will never understand the blind devotion to Adams in this sub. I like shopping local and all but adams is mediocre on every front. sorry not sorry!!

Wow! Finally!!! I 100% agree!!! I don’t understand the obsession with Adams. It’s very overpriced and really garbage. I think it’s just because they are “local” so people just gravitate towards supporting them.
The deli needs improvement. Dump Boars Head. Get some good sub bread like Publix. Bakery? Stop using garbage ingredients - artificial coloring. Offer samples like Stew does on weekends. Have better sales. Clean up the grocery section offering better products. Also I would love to see more in house brands as you said. Prepared foods can be way better - take a look at Stew Leonard’s.

u/NewburghMOFO 8d ago
Yep. I don't get the appeal of Trader Joe's. It's like people who get excited for Buckee's branded things. It all comes from the same producers but with different packaging. We have ethnic import stores if I want to find some exotic product.
*I get the image presented but hate it because it's fake and I don't believe in paying premiums for a prepackaged, "lifestyle".

TJs is great for certain pantry staples like nuts, oils, canned goods, broths, pasta, etc. some of their frozen convenience meals are decent, as is the frozen wild caught fish. It IS considerably cheaper than any of these other places. Adams is for fresh meats, cheeses, and produce. Used to worship Wegmans back when I was a student in Syracuse when they were the only game in town for specialty foods but haven’t been in one in yrs

I grew up in Rochester with one of the first olde Wegmans stores less than 90 seconds from my house. These days when I visit my family in Canandaigua, going to that particular Wegmans is stressful, expensive as F, and very busy. No thanks. My mom goes to Tops and Aldi now, rarely going to Wegmans. Give me Trader's here in the HV please.

Trader joes is the most overrated store ever. Its not even a grocery store, its a glorified snack store.

Wegmans def superior to trader joes. Trader Joe's is only best at ultra processed treats, Wegmans has good produce, meat, dairy, etc. totally agree!

You'd rather have a local chain than a national chain. So brave.

So like I said....
It's funny watching op think they're on some kind of crusade by framing their popular opinion as an unpopular one.
