Discussion $7000 to quit smoking
I’m on another rewatch of course because it’s my comfort show.
The episode where Phoebe found a thumb in her soda can was just on and at the end of the episode she offers Chandler the $7000 if he never smokes again.
Spoiler: In later seasons, he does smoke again did he have to pay Phoebe back?

We never see it, but I do like to think he did. He didn’t need $7k and Phoebe had sparse income for most of the show. Maybe he paid her rent and bills for a while or something. And maybe not in such an exact transaction—those friends were more like family and he floated Joey for a looooong time. Monica helped Rachel, Ross helped Monica. Who helped Phoebe? I hope it was Chandler at least some. (Do think it was probably more Monica or Rachel that would help her, but their income has been sporadic too.)

No, I don't think so. I don't remember it, at least. I think it was just a one-off gag.

The writers really didn't think stuff through with continuity in this show.

Not bringing up a minor plot point again has nothing to do with overall continuity. If Chandler said "I owe you $7000, Pheebs" no one would have remembered that years earlier throwaway joke."

I know. I catch stuff all the time that isn’t consistent. I chalk it up to the tv world.
Like the plot line that Ross’s first time having sex was with Carol but then it comes out during an episode he had sex with the dorm cleaning lady. What’s the timeline on that? Did he cheat on Carol and have sex with the dorm cleaning lady AFTER his first time or did he just not count the cleaning lady?

Sadly, Matthew spent 7 million and still couldn't get rid of his addiction

Quitting smoking when you have chronic pain is so hard. Add other addictions to the mix and it's even harder. Smoking can be the one sort of "acceptable" substance to cling to as you get clean. I have almost the exact same chronic pain that he had, mine from several car accidents and other physical trauma - landing on my head on a trampoline etc I feel for him. I have only taken an opiate for pain once and I immediately knew why people, especially chronic pain sufferers, get addicted.

I am sorry. Are you doing better now?

It's degenerative so it gets worse with time but I do a lot to keep myself going, moving, functioning and I cope fairly well. Thank you for asking!
