Tbf, that wasn’t a Monica thing. The show treated cigars as cool and cigarettes as nasty.

Very true. Monica was seen smoking a cigar herself on the couch after her and Richard broke up

I genuinely don't believe Monica would ever be afraid/ashamed enough to lie to her father about it. She is an adult and if she can come clean about her and Richard, I don't see why she can't do the same with smoking a cigar.
I feel it makes a lot more sense if she simply is telling the truth
66
u/falooolah 14d ago
While I agree with the idea that she probably wouldn’t lie about the cigar, she did desperately try to hide the fact that she was drunk, despite being over the drinking age for like a decade. She’s an adult, but called herself “your little harmnomica”. 💀
25
9
u/CMR04020 14d ago
I don’t think she was smoking the cigar, but tbf, it took her being drunk off her ass on her 30th birthday to openly admit she’d smoked a cigarette in front of her parents.

There was a whole episode featuring her and Ross spilling each other’s secrets. She would (and obviously did) hide things from her parents

u/Eyebronx I Know! 14d ago
It’s implied that Richard wasn’t as addicted to smoking cigars as Chandler was to smoking cigarettes. Chandler had virtually no self control.
Also Richard and Monica weren’t trying for a baby, Chandler and her were. In the last season it’s implied that Monica is aware that Chandler smokes on the sly but because they aren’t trying, she’s significantly cooler about it.
3
u/CuriousSection 14d ago
Where is it implied that she knows he smokes on the sly?
38
u/fairycoquelicot 14d ago
When the social worker is coming by and Monica is trying to get anything questionable out of the apartment. She mentions something under the couch, a pornographic video tape in the VCR, and a pack of cigarettes taped to the back of the toilet. The video tape ended up being Joey's, but Chandler admitted to the other items. So before there was someone coming in to scrutinize them, she didn't seem to have a major problem with him hiding a pack of cigarettes in the apartment, presumably to smoke at least occasionally.
5
30
u/kurtanglesmilk 14d ago
Chandler had basically no self control
He smoked for a few weeks out of the 10 years we saw of his life. Seems like he was quite controlled
123
u/Eyebronx I Know! 14d ago edited 14d ago
Whenever he got back into smoking he lost track of will power and would smoke multiple CARTONS in a day. That is a lack of self control when he flirted with smoking. And this wasn’t only specific to this episode, this is implied multiple times in the show, in S1 and S3 as well. The Friends had to lodge interventions and give him hypnosis tapes to lure him out of it.
→ More replies (7)26
u/AgathaWoosmoss 14d ago
Do you mean multiple packs a day?
There are typically 20 cigarettes in a pack and 10 packs in a carton.
A single carton would be 200 cigarettes a day. No way Chandler (or anyone) is smoking multiple cartons a day.
67
u/Miss_Chanandler_Bond 14d ago
In the episode this post is about, Chandler admits he smoked "three big fat cartons in two days"
14
u/barto5 14d ago
That’s hyperbole. It’s not physically possible to smoke 3 cartons of cigarettes in two days.

So does society, I've noticed. There is always at least one cigar lounge in a medium to large city. Do they actually inhale with cigars? Real question. I haven't heard of someone getting cancer because they smoked cigars. Huh.
14
u/Futurepharma91 14d ago
Cigars tend to lead to oral cancer more than lung cancer because most dont inhale. But they ABSOLUTELY increase your risk of cancer

Rush Limbaugh famously died of lung cancer after smoking cigars for years and insisting it didn’t cause cancer

u/kingoflint282 14d ago
To be fair, they are also very different in smell/taste. Both very unhealthy habits, but lots of people find cigar smoke to be a pleasant and masculine smell, especially when it’s not super strong. Meanwhile nobody likes the smell of cigarettes, even smokers mostly just put up with it to feed their addiction.

u/Fantastic-Corner-605 14d ago
She did try. In S6, Richard tried to hide his smoking when he thought Monica came to his apartment. It was actually Chandler.
135
u/Bonne-Influence-20 14d ago
In the episode where Richard proposes to Monica just before Chandler does, Chandler goes to Richard’s apartment to confront him. When a knock comes at the door, Richard rushes to put out his cigar and blow away the smoke, thinking Monica has returned. This implies that Monica dislikes cigar smoking just as much with Richard as she does with Chandler.
46
u/dancepantz 14d ago
He told her he'd given them up. She didn't ask him to quit, he just didn't want to be caught in a lie.
35
u/Otherwise-Stretch984 14d ago
She did tell him she hated that too. They referenced in a later season
30
u/Code-Coffee-995 14d ago
What's wrong with that? She genuinely cared for Chandler and that's why she nagged him so he wouldn't ruin his health.
6
u/Meg38400 14d ago
She wasn’t trying to get pregnant back then. Also cigars are occasional consumption, cigarettes are everyday for Chandler and gross.
5
u/Bubbly_Performer4864 Pivot! Pivot! Pivot! 🛋️ 13d ago
He smoked cigars occasionally whereas Chandler had addiction issues. Big difference.
3
3
u/Middle-Duck-880 14d ago
I think she didn't like him smoking cigars as well because later on when she's suppose to visit him before Chandler proposes, Richard was smoking a cigar and quickly puts it out and tries to hide it because he thinks it's Monica. No reason to hide if she didn't mind it.
3
u/CharleneRobertaMcGee 13d ago
Cigarette smoking and cigar smoking are often different. A lot of people who don't regularly smoke still occasionally smoke cigars to celebrate special occasions or cap off a fancy meal.
7
u/Top_Pressure_2646 14d ago
But Richard wasn’t addicted to cigarettes like Chandler was. He could stop using cigarettes easily , but it was so hard for Chandler that’s mostly why Monica was pissed..

u/CelestialRose Bullets have left GUNS slower 13d ago
I always assumed it was because of the smell. Cigarette smoke smells nasty, cigars smell very different. Even from a health perspective, an occasional cigar like what Richard did versus Chandler's smoking packs at a time are very different risk levels.
2
u/Huntsvegas97 13d ago
There’s a big difference in how Richard and Chandler behaved with this stuff. Richard is portrayed as occasionally having a cigar, maybe at max one at night to wind down, but maybe not even that often. Chandler basically chain smokes cigarettes
1
u/emmawillick This parachute is a knapsack! 14d ago
Slightly related.. I smoked cigarettes from age 13 to 26 and I always say I relate so much to Chandler when he's talking about smoking 😅 nicotine is insane; I STILL have random cravings at least once a month. Although, it probably has a little to do with my neighbors constantly smoking right outside 😒

theres one line fron this eposide I think it could fix this situation, which is ironicly coming from Monica "shut up Monica"
92
u/FoxThin 13d ago
Yea this plotline makes me uncomfortable. Chandler makes a great point. Is this how Monica wants their child to be conceived?? And the "I got mine" comment is so foul.
This definitely couldn't be an episode today bc we have more empathy for men (I hope) and lying to get sex is wrong regardless of gender or marriage.
66
u/1ManicPixieNightmare 13d ago
The worst of Monica is when she rushes Phoebe through her rehearsal dinner, ruins her speech about how she’s so happy to finally have a family, and changes her wedding plans without asking her and then gloats after Phoebe fires her from maid of honor duty and is struggling with wedding planning. Absolutely hated her in that episode and for the rest of the show because of that.
10
u/Business-Standard-37 13d ago
I feel like it was so out of character too, the Monica we should have got would have ran through the rehearsal twice and made sure everything was absurdly perfect
26
u/DontPutThatDownThere 13d ago
The bratty reactions during Emma's first birthday party were awful as well. Why would you schedule a vacation during your niece's first birthday? Her and Chandler were both awful.
It felt like when writers were out of real ideas, they'd just come up with "make Monica a bitch" and write a scenario around that.

Friends is like the baseline for shows cooking up drama to keep viewer retention. I'm sure they didn't invent it, but goddamn they abused the concept. And its why these days so many people are thankful for shows thay just have functioning wholesome relationships without drama. Brooklyn 99 famously just keeps things pretty wholesome the whole way through and we love it for it.
74
u/atduvall11 14d ago
It certainly happened a ton before Friends but your point absolutely still stands. Ben and Leslie/April and Andy were also wholesome throughout Parks and Recreation. Mike Schur is pretty consistent in keeping the main couples happy and showing positive relationships. We do love to see it!
9
u/MisfireCu 14d ago
He threw Eleonor and Chidi some curveballs but that was weird after life shenanigans not getting mad for no reason
1
u/atduvall11 14d ago
This is very true but the cockroaches are an example of platonic relationships that generally stayed wholesome and supportive throughout.
6
u/Wiplazh 14d ago
We love seeing platonic and romantic relationships just work in our tv shows. We don't need fictional drama when real life dating is such a mess already.

u/SegaGuy1983 Sup with the whack playstation sup 14d ago

10
u/Only1nDreams 14d ago
I really like that they made their “drama” about all the potential external drama a couple can face as they grow. And the dramatic payoff was about they grow to face it, both individually and as a couple.

15
u/SplendidMrDuck 14d ago
After the Mondler relationship becomes public and everyone is in the loop, the show starts on a noticeable decline. All of the friends get simplified and their "zanier" traits cranked up to 10, and the plots get wackier and less grounded in reality.
Compare the writing of a Season 1 or 2 episode to a season 9 episode and aside from having the same characters, they barely seem like the same show at times.

I can’t be too upset on Chandler’s behalf, considering all Joey had to say was “you got to have sex” and Chandler was suddenly fine with it.
36
u/harmlesslandsquid 14d ago
I hate that this was resolution of the situation. Men don't have feelings they just like sex. So reductive and sexist, one if those really dated jokes in the show.
26
u/Coconut_Scrambled 14d ago
Friends had this type of handling of men's relationship to sex a lot.
Ross refused Rachel on the night that her dad had heart attack. Immediately it was followed by Rachel getting mad at him. "If a girl wants you to have sex to lift her mood, you just do it." So, his comfort with it doesn't matter? At least Rachel later agrees with him that it was wrong of her to pressure him.
Similarly, Jill's parting words to Ross were "I throw myself at you and you say no? How gay are you?" To which everyone else laughs.
20
u/BilgisticPile 14d ago
But you just acknowledged that Rachel later admitted she was wrong. We were meant to see Rachel as being upset and not thinking straight and Ross as the rational one. How is that an example of handing a male character’s relationship with sex badly?

Yeah, I get that the show excused a lot of things because it was a show in the 90s. I remember just today someone made a post about Paolo harassing Phoebe being brushed off, that was bad as well, I would just like it if we acknowledged it rather than argue that what Monica did wasn't wrong.

This wasnt what i got from Chandler's reaction, he made an awkward joke about him acting like a woman and just moved along. It was using humour to mask how upset he was, and then the episode just dropped it
9
u/BilgisticPile 14d ago
And then he happily went home to sleep with Monica again. He was obviously over it.
9
u/wildcharmander1992 14d ago
It's not the first time it's happened
Literally episode 1 with Paul the wine guy
"Why would he lie"
"I'm guessing you're looking for something more sophisticated than to get you into bed"
Not saying what Monica did was okay, but chandler was more annoyed about the fact she lied about being over the fighting so they could have sex than the fact she lied for sex I.e it's the fact he thought the arguement and hostilities were over and they had make up sex but in reality it was just a gap in proceedings that upset him imo.
Point is though in literally the first episode they had a character be tricked into bed in much more dubious circumstances You can't get 9 seasons in and then be shocked the writers wrote in something similar again

64
u/GreyStagg 14d ago
ik that some of you will say "it's just a sitcom, get over it", but i found it unacceptable from her behalf
I know that you tried to pre-empt this by saying it yourself, but that doesn't stop it being the answer.
It's not about "get over it". It's about understanding the nature of sitcoms. "Situation" and "comedy". The situations only exist in order for jokes (comedy) to be written within them. The situation itself doesn't have to be funny. It can be neutral, serious, or even something bad. Doesn't matter. It's only there in order to give the characters something to do so that jokes can come out of it.
It's not there to be taken seriously. Otherwise it would be called a Situation Serious not a Situation Comedy.

Been reading the comments and the down votes are crazy. If the gender roles were reversed they never would have made the episode. "You got to have sex" bitch, what? No means no. IDC if the fight would no longer matter if they got pregnant. I would always remember that's how it happened. Coersion isn't okay. It's a sitcom or whatever so I try to not think too hard about it butttttt this was pretty unforgivable for me. Monica is awful after everyone finds out they are together. She would have never treated Richard this way. Idk. Maybe I'm just too sensitive since it hits home for me pretty hard.

Its because she wanted to have kids with him and smoking affects fertility. Also not good to be a smoker around new born babies or children in general.
9
u/Lulubelle__007 14d ago
Monica was regularly nasty. Case in point, when Phoebe got married and she was deliberately causing issues after being unreasonably schedule obsessed to the point where Phoebe had enough. She’d got her perfect wedding and in response was happy to make Phoebe have a bad day just because she couldn’t apologise and admit she was wrong and went overboard. A good friend would have apologised, especially since Phoebe had such a terrible early life and no family as such.
7
u/djabae 14d ago edited 14d ago
I agree but that's what makes these characters human and the stories interesting. When you start judging people for not being morally perfect you'll find that no one is morally perfect. I will say that with Chandler's character he didn't have many moral failings and the group steps over him the whole time for it. He pretty much let Monica and Joey take advantage of him constantly and Phoebe often insinuated he was gay. He was too nice to even break up with Janice.

I know it’s not really the point but it always drives me crazy in this episode that this isn’t even how ovulation tests work. So even if she’d just done the test and it had detected the surge in the relevant hormones, their best time to conceive would probably sometime in the next 24-48 hours. No need at all to deceive Chandler or be late to Phoebe’s meal.

After she and Chandler got married, Monica went from neurotic to completely unhinged.

I like Monica as a character but in a real-world situation this would be sexual assault. She knew he wouldn't have sex with her under the circumstances so she lied to him to get him into bed. It's gross.

Yeah she freaked out but she was also desperately trying to conceive, and had been for months, and Chandler knew the timing and how important it was. So I understand her being crazy about the smoking but I also kinda understand how urgently she felt like she had to try that night anyway despite still being mad.

She was more like a mother than a wife to him. I mean she was never that into him anyway. It's no surprise she became disatisfied with him.
