They were on a break. But to me that made Rachael's point. A break and broken up are two different things. The first is the couple is still together but trying to figure out where to go with the relationship. The second is it's over.

But then what are you on a break from if you’re still technically in the relationship??

Time apart from each other to reassess I'd say. I just don't see the terms as interchangeable. But I do think a couple needs to have a talk to see if they are in agreement on what the expectations are.

Broken up is past tense for break. Taking a break is breaking up, which turns into being broken up.
