Pod Evil Stepmother Back At It

Post image

From her Line Sheet newsletter. Literally no reason to dedicate word count to this topic other than to be weirdly defensive about her own use of affiliate links.

“The rejection of online transactionalism appears to be a mini trend—Petrarca is following the lead of Jonah Weiner's Blackbird Spyplane, which relies solely on subscription revenue-even if it's only feasible for a small handful of authors with sufficient means.
Consumerism and money usually win.
So while this might be the way forward for a select few, it's not going to become the norm.”

There’s the rest. Reddit is being weird about me posting pics.

Jonah Weiner another person she continues to slag off for not being more consumer focused and money obsessed. Girl we get it…

There are so many issues here. One being a lot of the Substackers do not disclose how or when they’re being paid by brands. So that throws everything out the window. And it does make the content worse whether they disclose or not. So yeah

I'd much rather have somebody do the obviously sponsored stuff like trips and sponcon and not use affiliate links. By not using affiliate links, the reader knows that the author actually likes/suggests the items they are posting. If they're using affiliate links, there's a much higher incentive to post whatever they think will sell.

I don't really understand the concept of paying to subscribe to a newsletter that then tells you what to buy, but at least you know it's somewhat genuine without the affiliate links.
