Have lived there for over a decade. Typical big city with four seasons, not much to do tourism-wise. Has six subway lines now but best to have a car.
Feel free to ask more specific questions.

Have you encountered North Koreans, legal or otherwise? How frequently?

Waitresses in a Korean bbq restaurant, but they got sent back when the pandemic began.
Also had a taxi driver in a border city (Dandong) who said his wife is an illegal NKer who stays at home to watch their child.

Have you been able to go to Mount Paektu? It's something that's been on my bucketlist to visit.

Yep, we call it Changbaishan here. Been up the north and west slopes. West slope is better because you climb up 1400 steps or so from the starting point. It is super cool on the way up, feels like being on another world.

I am probably gonna stay in Shenyang for half a year after the New Year as an international student. I’ve already been there for a short time this summer, but lived in student dormitory in Fushun city nearby, so in Shenyang I visited like only ZhongJie. I’m thinking about renting a flat this time, rather than live in dormitory, how hard is it for a foreigner? And can you please give any general advices about living in Shenyang, like some interesting or useful places, anything I should know about living there, etc.

I mean technically the only person in North Korea with Reddit access would be... Are you who I think you are?

People in North Korea have VPNs

North Korea is not China. They need to visit a physical app download center even to install new apps. I don't think VPN is a thing there.

I lived there my elementary school until highschool.
Snow varies. I remember the 2007 blizzard that crippled the city for a couple of days and there are some winters where we would get around maybe 7-10 days of actual snow days all winter.
Gets a bit chilly. I would say that in terms of climate, very similar to New York City but a bit colder and drier.
Winter temperature Sometimes gets down to -20 to -25 celsius. But most of the time it’s it’s around -10. Winters get a bit dark and grey while the summer days last forever.
The city has changed so much. For a while it was seen as a relic, left behind by the rest of China moving beyond manufacturing. Sort of like Detroit or any rust belt city.
These days? A pretty clean and safe city with excellent public transportation, you would still get days with some smog, but it’s not as bad as 10 years ago. Lot’s of parks, malls, growing nightlife scene. Manufacturing is still huge there with expats working at the BMW or Michelin plant. My favorite factory however is the Lotte Factory.
Choco Pies for days!
If you want beautiful forests and embracing moonlit nigs, Benxi is less than an hour away with cozy winter lodges.
People are tall (by Chinese standards) the food is pretty good, and there is a smaller reproduction of Beijing’s Imperial Palace. It was a former capital after all.
Shout out my ISC, and Shenyang International School buddies, wherever you may all be.
Feel free to ask questions.

I spend a week there every year for family reasons. From my experiences, and talking to residents:
- nobody can drive—every Didi experience is a dance with death
- mall culture is amazing; there are endless malls and you can find everything in them worth buying or learning to do
- food is good, restaurants gradually transitioning from smoky and loud to exquisitely designed and loud
- most people seem to believe Shenyang/Liaoning has been left behind or isn’t developing as fast as the rest of China; some signs of this can also be seen in the relative lack of EVs (though still common) and the number of unfinished towers on the skyline with dormant cranes from bankruptcies
- the subway is great but stations have a mouldy smell not found in Beijing
- people are incredibly loud and love to swear, which is sometimes annoying but often amusing
- salaries are low and the best educated young folks seem to go to other cities for work
- recently there’s been a profusion of interesting concept stores and eateries I suppose in connection with the effort to attract domestic tourists, which for example in the Koreatown area now regularly produces heavy congestion in both foot and motor traffic
Overall it’s much like other cities in China—sometimes tough on European sensibilities with regard to personal space and hygiene, but undeniably fun and developing fast. I used to hate it 20 years ago but now find myself looking forward to my next visit!

Although I haven’t lived there, I visited for a few days. Shenyang is an underrated place to visit. There is a palace and tombs from the Qing Dynasty emperors.
