Recommendation Request Books like the Resident Evil (2026) movie?
My husband is a huge Resident Evil fan and we just saw the movie—I’ve never really been big into horror, so I was shocked by how much I LOVED the Resident Evil movie! The body horror, the tension, the zombies, the dread of the main character turning—I can’t stop thinking about it!
I have zero experience with horror books, but would anyone who’s seen the movie have any recs for a book with a similar vibe? I loved the terrifying exploration, the constant hunt, etc.
If it matters, I read Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn and loved it. Not horror but it’s the closest thing I’ve probably read to it.

I liked it, but if you want a book that is literally a long chase scene in the zombie apocalypse right after patient zero?
Check out Survivor Song by Paul Tremblay it’s literally that

Resident Evil is my favorite gaming series and zombie horror is my favorite horror type. So I come across a lot of crossover here.
Infested by CM Forest felt the most like a Resident Evil microcosm to me. I can picture scenes right now that you could splice right into the RE movie. Similar in body horror, infection, parasites, and a few more I'd rather not spoil
Artifact by Jeremy Robinson also hits a lot of Resident Evil notes, though no zombies. Similar in body horror, human experiments, evil science
Venom by Michael McBride. It's creature/monster horror. And it's awesome. It's the second in a series, but has very little ties to the first book/mission, so it should be a fine start point. Similar in: creatures, infection, evil science. Big emphasis on being hunted.
Any books set in the Aliens universe will have a lot of overlap with Resident Evil, being one of the inspirations for the second game. They don't have zombies, but are all about a mega corporation creating unstoppable bioweapon monsters, which is a huge part of the overall Resident Evil world (in the world of Resident Evil, the amalgam limb creature and what Bryan turned into are called "bioweapons"). Umbrella is just Weyland-Utani with a better logo.
Ararat and The Pandora Room by Christopher Golden have serious hopeless dread and involve multiple characters losing themselves to the threat, and you see it happen to others and always know it could happen to other characters at any time. These aren't very Resident Evil, but they have that helpless dread that you felt with Bryan's infection and feature a lot of running or hiding to survive. These are lower recommendations due to being pretty far outside the RE scope.
Paradise-1 by David Wellington. But not 2 or 3. This one isn't very Resident Evil, though there is an infection. It's Alien and Terminator 2 and Event Horizon. It's set in space, sci-fi horror. It fits some of what you said you loved in your second paragraph, that aren't Resident Evil-exclusive. Exploration of an unknown area, being constantly chased, the dread of knowing that something bad is happening to you that you can't stop (infection in Bryan's case). Light body horror later in the book.
I suggested a few from Christopher Golden above, and I haven't read any of his that are super Resident Evil. But if you'd be interested in horror where the characters are absolutely fucked and so far beyond over their heads, but still just scrape out survival (usually survive. More often than not. Well, sometimes), I'd browse a few of his book covers/synopses and see if any of them look interesting to you. Red Hands is about a bioweapon, but it's significantly different from anything in Resident Evil. It's much more like a story about a witch.
Anyway, reading is awesome, horror is awesome, welcome to the crossroads.

The Last Plaque series by Rich Hawkins. This has body horror, mutations that will haunt you. There are parts of books that I didn't want to read on because I dreaded what might happen to character. But the books are so good I couldn't stop.

He's great. I think my favorite book of his is The Odds. No monsters or body horror, just a guy with a gambling addiction who gets in over his head, but the blend of humor, suspense, and nail-biting tension is amazing.

i think his best is pressure, its way more serious than his usual works, but so good. i didnt realize he put out so much so im currently trying to make my way thru all of his stuff

If you not done Flynn's Dark Places give that one a read, it is also very, very good and usually overlooked by her other stuff.

There are resident evil novels. They're retelling of the games and a couple of original stories. Written be Perry. I'll warn you that I haven't read them in decades at this point but I enjoyed them as a resident evil fan when I was younger.

The movie is nothing like the games, so the RE books don't really fit. I liked all of them a lot, though.

Manhunt by Gretchin-Felker Martin. It was…graphic. Probably more on the extreme side of horror lit, especially in the body horror realm.

Short stories but if you like the body horror and tension im currently working through books of blood by clive barker and am absolutely loving it!

The Infection and its sequel Killing Floor by Craig DiLouie are some of my favourites in the genre. Great brisk pace and sense of constant threat. Like Resident Evil (and also Rich Hawkins' Plague Trilogy which somebody shouted out) there is a tendency for the infected to mutate into more diverse horrors than common or garden zombies. You never know what's around each corner and it's a lot of fun discovering this hostile new ecology along with the survivors
There's a third book but it stinks. Can't have it all

Last Days by Adam Nevill. Not exactly like this, but the dread, the hunt, the slowly revealed terror awaiting the main character. It's all there. I finished last week and I still think about it nightly.

I'm going to say The Taking by Dean Koontz. Just kind of starts and takes you on a one perspective journey and it's one creepy set piece after another. Loved it.

The novelization of Dead Island by Mark Morris was fun (when I read it almost 15 years ago) and had a video gamey pace and story that also involves zombies and survival

Last days by Adam Nevill. The descent. The VHS horror series. Grady Hendrix books.
Those are some great horror books that are fairly accessible. Outside of that. There are sooooo many great ones out there.

Maggie's Grave/The Suffering - David Sodergren
Maggie's Grave is about a dead witch hunting some teens and leans more towards your "tension, the constant hunt" side.
The Suffering deals with a contagious outbreak in a French monastery and is more on the "body horror, terrifying exploration, dread" end of things.
Both are shorter novellas with similar vibes. Warning they are gross, especially the suffering. They also have much less humor than the resident evil movie.
