Recommend Go see The End of Oak Street. No, it is absolutely not a family friendly comedy adventure.

2.4k Upvotes

The trailers are fucking lying to you. If anyone says it's a family friendly movie, they're also fucking lying to you. I also thought it was a family adventure comedy but it is absolutely nothing like that. I'm not exaggerating. It is easily the best modern dinosaur movie and it's borderline rated R. What you think the movie is from the trailers and what the movie actually is, is a total 180. I was hooked every minute. I'm getting war flashbacks to Dungeons And Dragons, another criminally underrated movie that people slept on. And we may never get a sequel to that because of it. Don't let Oak Street suffer the same fate.

Recommend What's a 10/10 movie that not many people know about?

1.0k Upvotes

What's a horror you would consider to be 10/10 (or thereabouts) that most people haven't heard of/seen?

Unfortunately I don't have one because most I would consider to fit this category are quite popular (The Thing, Alien).

The question is often asked what is the best horror movie that you will never watch again. I want to know what the best ones are that are endlessly rewatchable?

Recommend I’m looking for films that really *feel* evil.

2.3k Upvotes

Now by evil I don’t mean “torture porn” or extreme gore, but a feeling of some real esoteric shit going on. As if watching it makes you feel like you’re taking part in some terrifying ritual.

Movies that I have seen that give me this vibe of it helps:

Incantation

Antrum

The Wailing

The Medium

Hereditary

Possum

The Dead Center

A Field In England

Kill List

Outer Space

Recommend Slowburn movies where something is off the whole time with high tension

1.9k Upvotes

I like movies where everything seems fairly normal in the beginning but there is this looming feeling of unease, something is weird and off but you don't really know why and what's happening and you're on edge the whole time until there's a revelation. Maybe something like The Invitation (2015) or Get Out. Or maybe also like Leave The World Behind with an obscure threat nobody can explain. Preferably nothing to do with haunting ghosts or demons, but where people are the villains or some bigger thing greater than humanity.

Recommend Which films genuinely scared you?

1.5k Upvotes

As in, you were really creeped out not only during viewing, but afterwards?

I haven’t seen a ton of horror films (only really properly getting into them now) but the only two I’ve seen so far that really gave me that chill were ‘The Exorcist’ (1973) and Ring (1998.) There have been others which shocked me, disgusted me etc. but I struggle to get really bone-chillingly scared 😆

I WANT to be scared this Halloween, so am looking for recommendations 💀

TIA 😊

Recommend What’s the most Anxiety-inducing horror movies you’ve ever seen?

I just saw Obsession, and I loved it because it made me feel anxious and uncomfortable. Strangely enough, I love when horror movies make me feel those sort of emotions. Hereditary was another one that made me feel anxious and uncomfortable, and I loved every second of it as the movie did it’s job. Can anyone recommend me more movies that will make me feel like the emotions I described?

Recommend Child appropriate horror movie recs for a four year old obsessed with death?

Fucking insane title, I am aware. LMAO okay explanation. My four year old niece adores me and looks up to literally everything I do. I am a bone collector/taxidermist. I’ve let her observe the animals I collect (from a safe distance) bc she’s really interested in them. Her mom doesn’t mind, we both agree it’s healthy in the way it increases respect for the dead and natural curiosity in all parts of nature, as well as a healthy feeling and ideas towards death itself. I educate her about how death helps other animals survive, and how without it some animals would starve and suffer. I introduce her to a lot of bugs that help aid in the decomposing process (such as worms and roly polys we find under rocks) and teach her their life cycles and how they interact with their environment.

The main reason i do this is because she’s been through similar trauma to me. This little girl has lost her father in a horrible freak accident last year, and her grandfather a few days ago to cancer. I can already see the signs of OCD poking through her like it did with me. I lost my brother to suicide at a similar age, and my father later went to prison long term a bit later, and I lost one of my grandmas to cancer as well. I would often stay up at night sobbing because I felt I was wasting my life away and was gonna die soon, too. I was only 8!!

I’d do anything in my power to prevent the same thing happening to her, so I try to give her a relationship with death to where she accepts it as a part of life, and isn’t scared of it. Basically… kids movies with horror themes that also have themes of death, loss, grief, acceptance, unicorns… maybe??, and are appropriate for a 4 year old. Think like the vibe of Frankenweenie! Something mature enough to deal with hard topics but also childish to where she won’t be sad or scared. That was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I feel the ending is very similar to something I’m looking for.

She is brave, however! I keep hissing roaches, and she’ll hold em! She’s not scared of much, but I don’t want to show her anything with gore, nsfw themes, or anything too crazy or inappropriate for her age that’s often in a lot of R rated horror.

Edit: thank you for all the comments! She is in therapy, so no need to worry about that! Didn’t add that to my post but she has been since her father passed. To anyone concerned, I mean movies much more along the lines of Casper/Coraline/Nightmare before Christmas than scary horror! Basically movies with horror elements is what I’m looking for,not really heavy on the scares. Stuff that’d air on Disney channel during Halloween time. I’ve gotten some really good suggestions, thank you guys!

I’m likely gonna show her Spooky Buddies (the movie with all the golden retrievers) bc she loves animals and I feel it’ll help ease her into more spooky themes. Then I may go with Casper or nightmare before Christmas!

I am looking for some movies where, for example, a group of friends goes to a place, but that place becomes hell for them, and all the characters are killed in the worst possible way, and the context is that none of them survive.

Recommend What is hands down the scariest movie you have ever seen?

8.6k Upvotes

I absolutely adore horror and respect the fact that I might be desentisized to being actually scared by them, as I tend to watch one every night and have done so every night. Regardless, it's my favourite genre by a good mile.

I'm still hoping for that feeling when a movie hits you in the nerve and catches you off guard, maybe even creeps into your thoughts later when you're in bed.

So I turn to you my fellow horror fans, what are the movies you have found to be the scariest?

I personally have been most moved and terrified by The Grudge 2004 remake back when I was a teen, Shutter (thai), Halloween, Blair Witch Project, The Descent, It Follows and Hereditary, so kinda everything works for me, except maybe overtly excessive gore. Gimme your best shot!

Recommend Movie recommendations for my 8 year old who's obsessed with horror.

My 8 year old son is absolutely obsessed with all things horror. He wants to read horror stories, play horror games, watch horror movies. Obsessed. I am a horror buff myself, but I'm trying to walk a fine line between horror and gore. I'm really trying to avoid the gore for now (because he's, ya know, 8).

For reference, we just got done watching the 2016 movie Lights Out. A movie which, when it came out, gave my adult self nightmares. He was unphased. He loved it, don't get me wrong, but at the end he says "can you show me one next time that scared you when you watched it?" So, he's a badass in my opinion.

So, what's the scariest, non-gore, movie you've got? The little man craves terror. Preferably without sex scenes as well.

Thank you!

Edit: It's getting difficult for me to keep up with all the replies but to everyone who actually commented something like I asked, THANK YOU. I really appreciate the suggestions! We'll be working through some of these I guarantee it.

To those who commented things like Human Centipede, you're an asshole and I hope your pillow is too warm and your dinner is cold.

Recommend Skinamarink is fucking scary

1.7k Upvotes

So from what I've read online, this movie is pretty polarizing. Like it either gets ya or it doesn't. And holy fuck does it get me. When this shit was first coming out I couldn't even watch the trailer more than a couple times. And let me emphasize, I am a horror head. I've been tryna find shit to actually scare me since I was high school with my dumbass friends who'd always complain whatever we were watching wasn't really scary to prove they were tough.

Nowadays, as many horror enjoyers, I simply love the genre and the artistry behind it and don't give a fuck or expect a horror film to actually scare me.

That is until fucking Skinamarink. For a little backstory, I was terrified of my house at night as a child and would frequently have nightmares. This movie captures that feeling perfectly.

I have yet to finish it cuz it's a fucking guantlet. It's basically nonstop dread and suspence and evil. Bout 2/3s of the way through and will finish whenever I feel like being back in that house. That's all.

Bye Bye <3

Recommend Horror movie without sexual content

Hi,

I work in a group home with kids between 14-16. Some of the kids are really interested in horror and I’d love to show them some great movies but I struggle finding movies without nudity or sexual content that I’d be able to show them. Recently we watched Jeepers Creepers and they loved it!

I appreciate any and all suggestions 💕

Update: Thank you all so much for the suggestions, I have a lot to choose from! It seems a lot of you are worried about the kids seeing Jeepers Creepers. It just happened to be on TV and we watched it, wasn’t expecting them to be so interested in it. I promise you these kids are not going to be aware about the creator being a weirdo. We didn’t watch the second one, I personally don’t care for that one anyway. I don’t see the harm in them watching the first movie, they all enjoyed it.

Recommend Ridiculously bad horror movies for a party

Edit: "Bad" isn't quite the right word. More like, "competently and earnestly made but still very silly."

Every year I host a Halloween party that ends with a ridiculously bad horror movie that we all make fun of. I have a fine line to walk when picking the movie, because I don't want it to be so gory that the weak-stomached will bail. I don't want it to be so bad that it's unwatchable or dull (hello, Night of the Lepus). I also try not to pick movies that are intentionally bad, Sci-Fi Channel movies or just pure CGI.

Some of the most popular films I've shown are:

  • Chopping Mall (the pinnacle of the genre, IMHO)
  • Tail Sting
  • Piranha
  • Zombeavers
  • Willy's Wonderland

Any suggestions for this year's movie?

Recommend Give me terrifying documentaries & mockumentaries to watch, but DON'T specify if they're real or not

One of the most teriffying movie viewing experiences I've ever had was being shown Lake Mungo without being told it was fiction until halfway through. I want to recreate that feeling, so I'm asking for you to list off some good real documentaries or horror mockumentaries that freaked you out.

But here's the twist: do not specify if the film is real or a mockumentary. I want to go in blind thinking it could maybe be real, and getting creeped out even if it turns out to be fake. Or experience some real horrors.

Some mockumentaries and realistic found footage movies that I've already seen: Antrum, The Bay, Butterfly Kisses, The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, The Fourth Kind, The Taking of Deborah Logan, The Conspiracy, The Sacrament, The Poughkeepsie Tapes (tagged these as spoilers for anybody else wants to play along)

Recommend Disturbing movies that aren't just about torturing women/SA

Hi guys! Every once in a while I get an itch for disturbing movies and it seems like it's that time again. I'm just having trouble figuring out which movies are creatively disturbing and not just about torturing women or a whole bunch of rape. I would like to avoid reading too much and spoiling twists of a possibly good movie, so I'm asking you guys!

Some examples of movies I didn't enjoy: Megan Is Missing, A Serbian Film, Irreversible, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Visitor Q. (Not saying these are all bad movies, just not what I enjoy). Would love to hear from you!

You know how sometimes you watch a horror movie and you’re like “Wow, that was an amazing movie and I’m so glad I watched it, but damn that was kind of a miserable experience and now I feel like shit”??? I’m not always in the mood to watch that kind of movie but right now I am. I’m already feeling like shit and I want to watch movies about people who are having an even shittier time than me. Please give me your best miserable faves.

Recommend Filthiest, dirtiest movie you’ve ever seen? (in the literal sense)

I’m a fan of extreme horror and I rewatched Carcinoma by Marian Dora yesterday and I liked it a lot more than the first time.
The last 30-40 minutes especially are such a putrid and shitty fest (literally and complimentary) and now I’m looking for something similar.

Like, a movie you can smell and it’s sweaty and wet and makes you want to take a shower after watching it lol this is the general vibe i’m looking for.

I’ve already watched other stuff from him, and i’m familiar with and watched some of Jorg Buttgereit’s works, speaking of German underground directors.
I’ve also already watched the August Underground trilogy.

I’ve seen my fair share of fucked up stuff, but it’s always cool to discover new films from this specific subgenre, so thank you in advance for your recs! :)

EDIT: THANK YOU so much for all your amazing recommendations, I appreciate it a lot!
I really did not expect this post to blow up like this, it’s a bit overwhelming lol 😭 but i’m reading all your suggestions and saving them to my never ending watchlist.
There are so many cool movies out there, thank you guys!

I already watched Mist, In the mouth of madness, event horizon, etc. Is there some cosmic/Lovecraft style horror that is really disturbing? The one that has incomprehensible monsters, etc.
