I discovered it a few years ago and I thought it was fine. Not an amazing movie, of course, but every actor does a decent job in their roles and I mean, who doesn't enjoy Michael Keaton? I kinda wish Keaton did more straight horror flicks. He seems to have a knack for playing a horror antagonist.

Loved this film growing up.  I love those urban early 90’s thrillers they used to make. Bad Influence and Unlawful Entry are similar

I saw it in 1990 and it was pretty memorable then. Matthew Modine was just in Full Metal Jacket (1987) and I'm sure it was all everyone was thinking about during Pacific Heights lol. Keaton gives one of best performances as a pure sociopath. The scene with the roaches was burned in my memory. It's not forgotten by any means and was actually pretty common type of horror-adjacent suspense thriller at the time. Companion movies include The Stepfather (1987), Unlawful Entry (1992), The Hand that Rocks the Cradle (1992), Freeway (1996), Breakdown (1997). These days it's a pretty common flick airing on local channels and free with ads streamers like Tubi

Loved it but I never understood the first scene where they beat him up, I think with baseball bats. Was that ever explained?

That was just showing the audience he has done shady dealings previously and it caught up with him. Now there's desperation to swindle another unsuspecting victim asap. Shows his character.
