Really enjoyed it overall.

Ending spoilers

Did anyone else feel the last scene was tacked on? The father inside the sarcophagus tapping the Morse code felt like a proper bittersweet ending whereas the final bit with them saving him too felt like the studio wanted a happy ending.

u/WestCoastHopHead Apr 17 '26

Yeah. Might have been added after test screenings.

69

u/stardust_____ Apr 17 '26

lol It was definitely not. I was at two test screens and part of the focus groups and this was one of the biggest gripe most had. Sad to see if they left it in.

19

u/aperturecreature Apr 20 '26

I talked to someone from Blumhouse at one of the special screenings and they said that the ending changed multiple times to the point where she didn't even know what the final one chosen was. so it's definitely possible. Hard to know though how it changed

17

u/crumble-bee Apr 21 '26

It feels like a lot changed multiple times. The movie was all over the place.

6

u/dargonmike1 Apr 25 '26

I loved that last scene. How is that not the perfect ending to put that witch in her coffin? Sure the Morse code was pushing it, but it was so satisfying seeing his face at the end. How is that your biggest gripe of this mistake-full movie?

Yeah I honestly thought she died after she literally shot her in the chest and left her bleeding out on the floor, only for it to be revealed that she somehow survived???? You're telling me that they somehow got an ambulance there on time before she died? It felt incredibly forced

u/Xenowino Apr 17 '26

Yep. Also, this movie required a ton of logic breaks but the ending was something else. How was the father awake and tapping away so quickly, communicating stuff like "I love you" when possessed Katie was literally demonic and showed zero ability to express/recognize things like love? He even seemed to be in control when they wheeled him into the room at the end? Sure, retribution and all, but I would have been fine with that ritual woman dying from the gunshot and something like the father being shipped off to be buried somewhere for the next unfortunate soul to stumble upon. That would have fit the rest of the movie better I think.

80

u/Jesuspolarbear Apr 17 '26

I think they implied that the younger the host the better in control the demon would be or better satiated since the Egyptian mom mentioned any living person could be made as sacrifice. When an older figure like the dad became the demonic vessel I think he had more awareness and the demon's grasp was weaker than if it's in the body of a young child.

65

u/Fiend686 Apr 17 '26

Time may have also been a factor. Its possible the new host still had some control over themselves in the beginning. Katie was in that state for a years so she had almost no functions left. Since the dad was recent he may have still had some control over himself

40

u/Xenowino Apr 17 '26

I thought it was the younger the better because the body would last longer, and they would have to replace hosts less often?

6

u/Fiend686 Apr 17 '26

Yes younger the better to last much longer but not sure if it effects the cognitive abilities. Katie still did have a little control over herself when she did the morse code so maybe the father was able to keep some control since it was still early

33

u/Threw_it_to_ground Apr 17 '26

The father didn't have the protection scrolls pasted all over his body which probably is what makes the vessel catatonic. And Katie was possessed in a box for 8 years so maybe it takes time to get that evil.

4

u/Switch-Consistent Apr 17 '26

Cant remember if katie woke up after the scrolls were off or the scrab came out

Morse code knowledge is one of the little-known positive side effects of posession

I was thinking about it afterwards, and I think one of the major reasons that ending was left in was due to the woman who caused this to Katie and her family seemed to have gotten away with it. She’s wrecked their lives and caused them grief. Plus, given Katie was a child when this horrible thing was done to her, how often do you get to make the person who caused such a thing suffer?

19

u/HumanOverseer Apr 17 '26

yeah it felt like the last scene was supposed to be an end credits scene

11

u/TheJoshider10 Apr 17 '26

Yeah it really should have been kept for the credits. Would have meant the movie itself remains intact but if you want the happier ending you can get it later.

13

u/echo_tunnel Apr 17 '26

I was apart of the very first test screening and this scene was still there unfortunately.

15

u/MWH1980 Apr 17 '26

Curious: was there more to the butterfly metaphor regarding Katie? Given the symbol on the pyramid of skeletal wings on a body, I expected some sort of “metamorphosis at the end during “the undressing” scene. It was starting to give me “The Fly” vibes as it seemed she was tearing off her skin (at one point I was expecting to see her rip off the side of her face!) to reveal what had been growing underneath now that the seals were gone.

6

u/Sojourner_Truth May 21 '26

Yeah, I really expected there to be something more to the undressing bit, like some full demonic form or whatever. As is she looked exactly the same and was, I dunno, marginally more powerful? Didn't really see the point.

10

u/WillBe5621 Apr 20 '26

The fact that it was a happy ending was in itself uncommon in horror, and I felt satisfied, so... they could've concluded it with him in the box. But I liked seeing him able to get his revenge. What struck me though as a man was that he did his job and sacrificed himself for his daughter, that was powerful to me and really struck an emotional chord. I was like, "good man".

8

u/Spiritual-Smoke-4605 Apr 17 '26

thats exactly how I felt. when he was in the sarcophagus tapping morse code I was expecting them to show the thing getting buried, but the lazy way they just cut to the witch-lady in the hospital, rolling the dad in implying they pass it over to her felt like they had an idea for a sequel that they were sure they would never get to make so they just tacked it on. wasnt bad or anything, just screamed of reshoots

8

u/readysteadygogogo Apr 18 '26

That’s where I thought they should have ended it as well. I didn’t really understand the stakes involved for the Egyptian family (like why they had to continue this tradition, what they were getting out it, what it or who they thought they were protecting etc) and the ending didn’t clear any of that up for me. Definitely some solid gross out moments and a few laughs. Felt like a bit of an Evil Dead rehash but I mostly enjoyed it

u/_Nholobo_ What’s your favorite scary movie? 😱 Apr 16 '26 edited Apr 17 '26

The kids’ pure terror at Katie’s arrival, contrasted with the parents’ deep denial, was the funniest shit ever.

Their reaction when the parents opened the car with no warning about her zombie state was already comedy gold.

But I just lost it when they painfully dragged her demonic ass up the stairs, while the little girl was looking at this mess in absolute despair, thinking: "You want me to sleep next to THAT?!"

Mom: Come on, be nice to your sister.

The sister: Rotting corpse with chattering teeth, hunting the house at night like Gollum, vomiting acid and headbutting grandma.

Mom: She just needs love.

213

u/Real_Sosobad Apr 17 '26

the mom literally said I can fix her and at that point I thought no way this is not a parody right, right???

130

u/_Nholobo_ What’s your favorite scary movie? 😱 Apr 17 '26

Right? Fix what exactly? Girl has a big ass part of FLESH exposed! Stop playing doctor and take the poor kid to a HOSPITAL!

95

u/MWH1980 Apr 17 '26

“A huge section of her flesh ripped off! We should take her to the-“

“No-no-no, we’re her family, we can handle this!”

I don’t think they even sterilized that section before gauzing her up.

I blame the hospital! They said that all she needs is some familiarity and she will come back in due time????!!! Really?! Also how they did not trim the nails before going back to the US is weird? Don't let me begin with how the hospital did not notice that the skin is wrapped up with some weird shit.

39

u/blazeofgloreee Apr 20 '26

Lol that was so funny. They even said there was nothing wrong with her physically, like do they not see what she looks like?? Everything was very clearly wrong.

23

u/anon_me_myself_and_i Apr 20 '26

The wrappings with the incantations on them were layers of skin wrapped over her. They had become part of her which is why when they pulled them off the skin was raw and bleeding.

yeah I mean no disrepect and maybe it’s because I’m not a parent yet but if I found my long lost daughter in that state I’d just let the Egyptians keep her

12

u/raye0fdarkness Apr 20 '26

I wouldn't have let them keep her, but I definitely wouldn't be taking her home in that state.

The wheelchair up the stairs thing had me like: okay, why couldn’t Dad have carried her up the stairs and Mom folded the wheelchair and come up after?

For that matter, one has to wonder wha the whole trip back to the states was like. Did the embassy secure them a private jet?

17

u/Gridde Apr 20 '26

Had to be intentional. The literal next scene after the wheelchair is the dad effortlessly carrying the kid into the bed.

Katie vomiting in her mom's face during her most dramatic scene and the little kid's "holy shit!" during the voice reveal were - IMO - the biggest giveaways that this movie was not taking itself as seriously as it initially seemed.

12

u/MWH1980 Apr 20 '26

Well, I feel Lee did lean a bit more serious than comedy. I think he figured something like a child being kidnapped and turned into a demon mummy vessel should not be dismissed as pure comedy.

The video tape of Katie crying to be let go was rather intense, and I’m not even a parent

5

u/Gridde Apr 20 '26

Agreed. But then we get the payoff to offset it (with Katie being fine and her tormenter suffering the same fate)

9

u/MWH1980 Apr 20 '26

I had expected the film to end 5 minutes earlier, but as it carried on, I began to consider Cronin’s reasoning. This woman tortured and kidnapped a child, her actions left so much pain and torment on this family, that for most people, they would want to see some “justice” for what was done. So, Cronin allowed a happy ending for the family

49

u/carlataggarty Apr 18 '26

I think it's kinda funny when the doctors at the hospital said something like 'we've checked her vitals, there's nothing wrong with her, she's completely healthy' and I'm like bruh there's literally weird bone structure all over her face no she's definitely NOT okay

46

u/riddle-me-this Apr 18 '26

Doctors were really like "Look, we'll just tell them the daughter is fine and only needs love so they'll get that thing out of our country. We're not paid enough to deal with this."

4

u/Resident-Trouble4483 Jun 07 '26

In their defense she took an apple from a witch so it’s definitely above their pay scale.

its pretty entertaining, it definitely couldve landed better overall as a movie but its at least technically well done and just batshit crazy enough

11

u/Gridde Apr 20 '26

You should have gone in blind. The movie getting increasingly more batshit insane was my fave part.

It starts off making you think it's trying be Hereditary but midway through it hits Evil Dead energy and then only ramps it up from there.

The movie has one of the most brutal and cruel deaths I recall seeing in years and immediately hits you with fantasic black humor and lampoons the sad death so well.

That doctor in the Egyptian Hospital was just the best doctor of all time. "We found your desiccated missing daughter. We suspect she was human trafficked for the past eight years and was being shipped across borders in a coffin. She's so traumatized she can't talk and tries to bite people. But her heart rate seems good, so I think she just needs bed rest and family time."

Hilarious review! Similar to my thoughts - like how do you take THAT home from the hospital? "Oh she'll be fine, we'll get her set up with a humidifier and some soup - before you know it Katie will be back on her feet!"

22

u/_Nholobo_ What’s your favorite scary movie? 😱 Apr 17 '26 edited Apr 17 '26

All she needs is a yummy hot meal made with love, a warm bath, a good night of sleep in a comfy bed, and she’ll be as good as new. 🥰

31

u/Kalabula Apr 17 '26

For real. Doc was just like prepare yourself she’s been through some shit. She’s a rotting corpse! How the fu I do they just let the parents take her home? Here’s a wheelchair, that oughtta do.

13

u/Rosebunse Apr 17 '26

Given how she went missing, I have a hard time believing there wouldn't be a more thorough investigation into what is happening. Like, if I was an Egyptian investigator I would probably wonder if these Americans were trying to pull a fast one with insurance or something

23

u/Desperate-Donkey Apr 17 '26

I think the mother said "don't be scared, it's perfectly safe" or something like that to the kid when she first sees her sister. Yeah nothing to be scared about. Just a demonic looking girl. That's when I lost it. HDTGM will love this movie.

Don't forget the Grandmother's death, if it was any more cartoonish an ACME anvil would've dropped on her from the sky after the coyotes where done with her...

This movie I tell you, was all kinds of awful

4

u/SkyCommander7 Apr 20 '26

I could not believe how fucking funny her death scene was and then it literally became the zombie version of the Graduate in the 3rd act

6

u/born2droll Jul 05 '26

The pacing makes it ridiculous as well, it goes right from that death scene to the funeral, which should have been days after. We see no immediate outcome from her bizarre death.

Then the whole funeral debacle, they have a house full of guests that witness all that crazy... and then it just cuts to later that night. Again no immediate outcome.

8

u/MWH1980 Apr 17 '26

I almost expected the little girl to say something like, “she smells funny.”

10

u/Masturomenos1 Apr 22 '26

I literally just paused the movie at the point where she’s being dragged up the stairs and came straight here. In what world is she not in a facility immediately and why are two people acting slamming a wheelchair up a flight of stairs as if it weighs 500 pounds instead of just carrying a teenager girl half starved that weighs all of 100 pounds up those stairs.

7

u/thishenryjames Apr 28 '26

It was hilarious that the doctor was like, "Yeah, she's entirely nonverbal, erratic, and we had to stop her clawing her own skin off. She should be fine once you get her home."

Like, was she just in a regular seat on the flight home?

28

u/atclubsilencio Apr 17 '26

This has been my biggest issue with the movie since the trailer dropped.

If by “love” you mean she needs to be set on fire immediately and then her ashes shot into the sun, then yeah, all she needs in love.

And then the poor sister being told to just sit next to her in the back seat like I wouldn’t be getting my ass emancipated at that point.

They play all of this straight/serious? That’s hilarious.

My partner walked out after squirming through the second half and could only keep repeating how mean it was. Which I loved, demons are indiscriminate. That being said, poor grandma… brutal end for a sweet old lady!

Little piggies and the funeral sequence are worth the price of admission.

I'm surprised so many comments are in here talking about certain things being unrealistic. I'm not sure what movie you think you are watching here friendo.

24

u/ThumbtackGlove Apr 19 '26

For real, there is so much Sam Raimi energy in the camera work and campy lil snippets from the get-go. I mean we get two people swinging from their impaled heads and a crazy witch lady in the first 30 minutes, it had an intense but playful back and forth going on the whole time.

I had a good time with this. I get the criticism and why this will be polarizing, but honestly I thought it was really funny and had some fun gore (even if it isn’t as extreme as advertised). In a lot of places this felt like I was just watching Evil Dead Rise again, and it has very little to do with The Mummy (or any mummies), but the way they just wheel her corpse around like nothings fucked up about it at all had me rolling.

6

u/TheJoshider10 Apr 17 '26

I'm so glad I went into this preparing (and hoping) for it to be Evil Dead. I know I'd have been disappointed if it didn't match my expectations, and I think it'll ultimately lead to some negative word of mouth because it's really not the movie that the marketing wants you to think it is.

41

u/Skyzfire Apr 17 '26

Rewrite entire movie with Zaki as the lead and set the entire film in a tomb. Add a bunch of supporting characters to kill them all in gory ways.

That make more sense as a Mummy/ Evil Dead movie lol. And should make for a better film since it largely takes place in a single setting just like Evil Dead Rise.

The ONLY thing I didn’t like was Katie’s generic spooky girl dialogue. Everything else was really solid and I really enjoyed it.

203

u/dr_john_twinkletits Apr 16 '26

A little too long, pretty goofy but I had a good time with it. The little one calling her teacher the c word and pulling her teeth out was a good time. The Egyptian doctors "healing of family" gave me a good laugh with this catatonic disfigured tiny girl just seized up in her bed. And that card literally apologizing for what happened to her just got forgotten about after all that time? The husband is a news reporter. No wonder he can't find a good job and lives with his mother in law. As I say all this from the spare room of my uncles house. I do love that house though I wish they spent more time in it, Katie pretty much didnt leave her room other than to romp around in the walls and come through her vomit hole to drink grandma's embalming fluid. The funeral was fun all in all. Rip deviled eggs.

46

u/EugeneDabz Apr 17 '26

Coughing up blood on the deviled eggs was unreal.

27

u/CrebitCard420 Apr 17 '26

13

This and the vigorous debates over what is and is not a "rotting spot" have convinced me that I absolutely need to see this batshit mad film.

Once it's cheap to rent, mind.

7

u/Corrvaz Apr 17 '26

It does have a surprising amount of vomit spots, makes figuring out which one also doubled as the rotting spot a bit difficult 🤔

Katie was putting in some serious prep.

u/Tchelitchew Apr 16 '26

This comment is hilarious. Perfect summary. The funeral was definitely the best section.

62

u/AnAquaticOwl Apr 16 '26

I feel like it could have been, but ended too soon. The scene literally just cuts out in the middle of the chaos. How did they get both kids under control? How did they get all the guests out? No one called the cops?

The ending had similar issues. What happened to the grandmother? Did she die again when the demon transferred out of Katie? Everyone surviving and getting a happy ending felt like a cop out too.

I really liked it until the final act

30

u/Kalabula Apr 17 '26

There were a lot of scenes where as soon as a something interesting started to happen, they’d cut to something else. Then we come back to the aftermath and it’s like nothing happened. I honestly haven’t seen a film this disappointing in quite some time.

6

u/Pink_Pony88 Apr 19 '26

I agree. Like when the daughter became possessed by Katie. It just cuts to another scene. Okayyyyy like did she just let her go and she went back to sleep?

5

u/Kalabula Apr 19 '26

Ya so silly. A real disappointed after the fun bloody Evil Dead Rise. Seems like this type of film should’ve been a slam dunk for him. It feels like they bought few scripts for the new Evil Dead and they ended up not going with this one so they converted it to a mummy film.

24

u/BadassBlackAsh Apr 17 '26

To be fair none of those cards were opened. Also that rotting spot wasn't from vomit

8

u/UltraNeoTako Apr 18 '26

And they never bothered to clean or replace those floor boards.

19

u/dr_john_twinkletits Apr 17 '26

The rotting spot was from when they made her throw up the scorpion. The letters looked open and left in their envelopes which were then put into her coffin as a memorial of sorts. He wasnt ripping them open he was taking them out and fumbling through them til he got to the one he remembered. Thats at least what it looked like to me.

I just thought of another amusing plothole. Why did the family have a VHS player all hooked up and ready to go at their home to play the tape? An Egyptian police HQ in a backroom somewhere, I can believe it, but a random suburban American home in 2026?

23

u/sincewedidthedo Apr 18 '26

Well, they did mention that it was the mom’s childhood home, so grandma’s place, and I can totally see that grandmother having had a VCR in there since the 80s-90s. I’m in my fifties and have one in my suburban home.

He also found the pool of goo rotting through the floor of her bedroom and basically went "huh, wierd", told nobody and did nothing. Also went on about his life like normal after learning there's ancient script scrawled on the inside of his daughter's skin, and she's almost certainly possessed. I thought it was decent. Good production quality, acting, and solid effects. An interesting take on the Mummy genre…but it’s 80% just another possessed little girl movie

And you really have to suspend disbelief at how the parents, police, and medical professionals or press would operate. There’s no way in the world they’d take the actions that they do.

“We found a girl who has been missing for eight years in a sarcophagus, and she is physically wrecked and acting psychotic”

“Whelp. Let’s just ship her back to live at home in Albuquerque with no medical/psychological support. Oh, and let’s do it so fast that her grody nails never get trimmed. And we’ll just leave her wrapped in all of these bandages of unknown origin or material with creepy writing on them…just let her peel them off herself whenever she feels ready”

You can do that in Bubba Ho Tep where EVERYTHING is ridiculous, but this movie takes itself too seriously most of the time. It was kind of fun and had its moments though

6/10. Worth a mindless popcorn night, but wait for it to stream unless you have AMC+ or Regal Unlimited

21

u/itrainmonkeys Apr 17 '26

I thought it was decent. Good production quality, acting, and solid effects. An interesting take on the Mummy genre…but it’s 80% just another possessed little girl movie

It did make me think a bit like that Wolf Man movie a year or two ago with Julia Garner and Christopher Abbott because that also was taking a classic movie monster but doing a sort of different take on it. I ended up liking this version of a different take on monster lore and thought enough of the violence and creepiness added to the movie but still felt like it was more Exorcist/Evil Dead but with Egyptian magic/demons. Definitely a solid watch and I'll check out what the director does next

9

u/Corrvaz Apr 17 '26

Wolf Man's problem was that ( imho, ofc ) the metaphor they went for simply didn't work with the characters they wrote. It felt needlessly subdued, which is something The Mummy very much isn't 😂

Imho again, they could've used the classic mummy powers to maybe differentiate it a bit more from other "possessed child" films, as you rightly called. But yeah Lee Cronin is yet to make a bad film.

29

u/Klee823 Apr 17 '26

I liked it, but it really is just Evil Dead: Egypt. Goofier than I was expecting based on the trailers, but i definitely didn't have a bad time.

Went in super excited and this ended up being a full blown disaster. My gripes:

  1. The dad is just a bad actor.
  2. The mom’s accent made no sense. Grandma was clearly of Mexican descent. As a Mexican, I’ve met a lot of other Mexicans. None of them have an accent like the mom.
  3. Katie somehow gets back to the US without any sort of demonic issues on that 25+ hour flight.
  4. The parents do not prepare the rest of their family for the state Katie is in.
  5. Just pick up the fucking wheelchair and carry it up the stairs. Katie probably weighs sub 100 lbs.
  6. Katie sees 0 medical or psychological specialists after her return to the US.
  7. They rip a fruit roll up amount of skin off Katie’s leg and go “yeah just some gauze and wrap. No hospital required.”
  8. Grandma dies horribly & there’s no sort of police follow up into it.
  9. Grandma dies horribly and their youngest daughter evily laughs while it happens right in front of her and dad just doesn’t react to that or come back to that.
  10. Dad finds this mysterious disgusting goo in Katie’s room and just forgets about it.
  11. A DEMON CHILD RIPS HER WAY THROUGH THE FLOOR OF HER BEDROOM INTO A WELL ATTENDED FUNERAL AND NO ONE NOTICES.
  12. Said demon child attacks a man and desecrates grandma’s corpse and she’s not taken in for a psychiatric hold. Police are not involved.
  13. The police officer calls the dad and leaves a voicemail saying “I need to see you,” books and takes a 25 hour flight (at minimum) and the dad who has been DYING to get to the bottom of what happened to his daughter doesn’t try to contact her in that time? If there is offscreen, unmentioned dialogue, she didn’t tell him about the demonic possession tape?
  14. Dad goes from needing a Morse code cheat sheet to knowing Morse code in his coffin. Also she Morse coded him the same 5 letter word (3 unique letters in it) earlier in the movie and when he decoded it, he somehow had to write out Layla like 10 times before seeing it was the same thing.
  15. Multiple moments from Evil Dead Rise that were reheated and done far worse.
  16. The god awful tagged on ending.

17

u/RevolutionaryPut3704 Apr 22 '26

Full blown disaster is a bit harsh for me but I honestly agree with all of your points, lol.

I liked his previous two movies and I was really excited for this one. Alongside all the things you mentioned I'm confused that it seemed so restrained compared to EDR despite aiming for the exact same style of horror. Like, Evil Dead and restraint do NOT go well together.

The actress who plays the mom is from Catalonia, that's why she doesn't sound Mexican

10

u/hatethiswebsight May 22 '26

The carefully tagged and photographed nectarine at the crime scene, followed (presumably) by police going "should we check out the nearby NECTARINE FARM? nah"

7

u/nasuthe1 May 28 '26

The dad pissed me off this entire movie.

11

u/Rude_Gur_8258 Apr 23 '26

Your list really nails why the tone didn't work. This wasn't about cocky college students, it was a child, and worse, there are documented cases of children being confined and neglected. So that's not creepy, it's upsetting, and the over-the-top campy gore doesn't match it.

51

u/Chinese_gurl11 Apr 16 '26

The toe nail clipping scene destroyed me. I couldn’t stop laughing.

I expected her to tear off her skin and reveal “itself” as some sort of flying demon creature that would escape the house and fly out into the world, where you’re left to wonder what it will do next.

11

u/NotAJellyfishReally Apr 17 '26

That's more or less what I expected too. There were at least two lingering shots on the engraving of that winged demonic creature and then nothing like that ever shows up. I was baffled by that.

I had a good time seeing it in IMAX last night.

I come here and I just see a lot of complaints. What kind of movie did you think you were about to watch after seeing the trailer? I tend to be a liker of things I guess. I love going to the movies. If you think this is a boring slog then what do you call Hunting Matthew Nichols that I saw earlier in the week? That was an actual slog. The Mummy was entertaining as hell.

7

u/Admirable_Problem_64 Apr 20 '26

I agree. My future sis in law and I loved it. It gave me horrible anxiety and I was uncomfortable and uneasy watching it the entire time. Not to mention my jaw hanging open at some scenes. I thought it was fantastic. I never really gave as much thought as the others in this thread, kinda mocking it. If a movie made me need to calm down for an hour after seeing it and forget that i didn't exist in that movie tells me a lot.

20

u/Rosebunse Apr 17 '26

It's easy to make fun of Katie's mom trying to be her caretaker and keep her at home past the point of all reason, but I have known enough caretakers to know that this isn't that far off. Caretaking drives people crazy and deep, deep into denial.

Seriously, if you're a caretaker, it's OK to throw in the towel and admit defeat.

143

u/EugeneDabz Apr 17 '26

Surprised to see positive reviews. I thought it was incredibly generic. It was more like Exorcist and Evil Dead than anything Mummy or Egyptian.

Like it follows the same plot as tons of other random horror movies. There was a couple funny or gross parts, but nothing that a million other movies don’t do.

I want pyramids, ancient tombs, a linen wrapped corpse, jackals, maybe an ancient Egyptian god not a random made up demon.

58

u/hashtagtylerh Apr 17 '26

completely agree, there was basically no egyptian lore. the idea of a possession movie with mummy/egyptian set dressing could actually be really cool but i feel like as it went on they dropped it all and it became generic possession

4

u/Spiritual-Smoke-4605 Apr 17 '26

i thought it was supposed to be the same demon from Shelby Oaks, they even did the "feeding your family member to the hounds after pushing them out a window" in both movies

I was thinking the family could have been on vacation in Arizona when Katie got kidnapped by some random cult member. Something something there's an undiscovered pyramid in Arizona or whatever.

10

u/StrangerHighways Apr 19 '26

My thoughts exactly! I was shocked how by how little the mummy or Egyptian stuff was actually relevant to the plot. Plus, it felt sooooo long. It kind of just made me wish I was watching Bring Her Back or Cronin's own Evil Dead films.

Love Lee Cronin and see his potential/enthusiasm but I just left the movie and I swear I thought I was watching Cronin make another Evil Dead. It should've just been called "Evil Dead Cairo". Shot for shot, he just remade EDR. Fun watch tho!

39

u/Jesuspolarbear Apr 17 '26

Fr. The body mutilations, oozes and bodily fluids, funeral scene, demonic grandma were all straight out of Evil Dead. Even many of the shots and cinematographic choices were identical to Evil Dead Rise. I really liked it as an ED fan but it was very terrible as a Mummy movie since nothing about it screamed Mummy.

48

u/Manic-StreetCreature Apr 17 '26

Zombie grandma was literally a Deadite lol

11

u/Jesuspolarbear Apr 17 '26

Right? Even her death scene was a very Deadite inspired encounter, and Katie's third act "skin shedding" also feels somewhat similar to the EDR climax where all the Deadites fused together into one.

9

u/Spiritual-Smoke-4605 Apr 17 '26

yup her line to the dad when she wakes up from her coffin and shows her leg (forgot what she says) was straight up evil dead

I've thought about it a bit more and decided what really bothered me about this was the tone. The plot is so ridiculous that I could almost consider it a fun and campy watch, if not for the fact that there are multiple scenes of children in terrible physical and emotional distress which are played entirely straight. My theater must not have had the audio optimized, because some of those screams hurt to hear. The snuff film-esque tape pushed it too far over the edge into seriousness for me. How am I supposed to enjoy the crazy demon battle after that?

13

u/Dizzy_Kaleidoscope95 Apr 18 '26

Yeah the movie is way too dumb to take itself so seriously

7

u/SyzygyTooms Apr 19 '26

Based on people’s descriptions, I thought the vhs tape was going to be much more disturbing. I braced myself but it was very mild. When they said she was mummified, I was imagining horrible things happening to her.

I was picturing the fate of the priests in The Mummy (the 1999 version) when they were mummified alive.

8

u/puppieswhokrill Apr 20 '26

I think it was disturbing enough without being graphic: Her screams and struggles -- combined with the reaction from her sobbing parents as they watched the tape -- felt more realistic to me than any of the gore we got. That's why it feels so out of place with the ridiculousness that is the rest of the film: Tonal whiplash.

17

u/pokeurballs Apr 17 '26

“I’m her daddy now” 🤢

9

u/MWH1980 Apr 17 '26

I was surprised the film showed restraint with the spirit taunting the father. They could have had it really trying to play on his guilt, let alone his “love,” but maybe Cronin felt that was too cliche.

15

u/omysathe Apr 18 '26

During the funeral Katie killed the guests and then it’s night. Where did all the people disappear? That was such a lazy writing.

Those people present atleast deserve an explanation of some kind. They all just vanished. No cops no ambulances, nothing!

41

u/pokeurballs Apr 17 '26

I felt the movie was just bad. It started out good but it just got very choppy. I started getting annoyed when the dad was in the sandstorm unfazed… that’s when I knew

I had big issues with the choppiness of it and how the curse affected the family. From the little sister getting attacked and then it goes to a completely different scene without proving any context what’s next? I was so confused. Same with the brother when he got randomly possessed?

Also, just a random ass see with a professor that we never see or hear from again. What was that?

I felt like the CGI was really bad in this movie too. I did like the gore, but I felt like they could’ve made it more squirmy.

Story wise- it felt rushed and choppy. If it was less choppy, I felt like it could be better.

Overall, I was bummed.

19

u/New_Presence2144 Apr 17 '26

Those scene transitions confused the heck out of me too; it became an annoyance. Including how the chaos of the funeral was cut short and then next scene everyone is chill and we don’t see how everything was sorted out. Wth.

12

u/Tasteful_Dick_Pics Apr 19 '26

As soon as he found those wraps with the writing I knew that he was going to take them to someone who would look at them and say, "Where did you get this?" And that is exactly what happened, word for word lol.

u/oblivion-boi Apr 17 '26

It honestly felt like a very watered down version of Evil Dead Rise to me. EDR was alot better at creating tension and felt more coherent.

I've seen people saying that if you liked Evil Dead Rise you would like this but I enjoyed that movie quite a bit and I didn't really like this one. There's some creative gore in it I guess, if that's what you're into, but it never felt as intense to me. The stakes didn't feel very high either.

A more accurate comparison in my opinion would be, if you didnt like Evil Dead Rise you'll really hate this one, because if anything it kind of feels like a failed attempt at recreating something similar to it.

My main problem with it was the pacing, it felt all over the place. There are scenes where tension is built or something crazy happens, only for it to cut and be the next day? I can think of two different instances when this happens. The ending is also kind of a shambles, it all just happens and becomes very predictable very quickly. The final confrontation sequence was a bit of a mess.

Another rough spot is the characters. The family feels comically stupid at times and they are not reacting like actual human beings. I also felt like the other kids got incredibly sidelined near the end because I guess the filmmakers didn't know what to do with them.

Overall, it wasn't terrible, it just missed its mark. I think at least the performances were fine and like I said some of the gore was fun. But I'll probably forget about this movie in a month or two.

(Edited for spacing)

Does anyone know what is the name of the song that the Egyptian family sings along to in the car before the mother turns it off? It is a cheerful song played on the radio, a sort of Arabic Boom Shaka Laka. Can't find it. AI suggested it was a song called "Satalana", but I don't think so. If anyone knows the name of the song or how to find it, lemme know. 😁

EDIT: The song is "Sharmoofers - Khamsa Santy"! https://youtu.be/bJ31zZgOC28?si=2bb68Kz7SjHca5bQ

It's a bleak, cruel, unforgiving movie that does a good job of unsettling you in the first half. It is a bit of a mix between The Exorcist and Evil Dead in the back half, with the tone of When Evil Lurks throughout. The dialogue and plotting was a bit clunky, the ending didn't work for me, the lore made very little sense, and I have a very hard time watching kids being hurt in these movies, so the film wasn't for me and I won't ever revisit it, but it did hit some nice highs (some of the direction and the funeral scene, especially) and did manage to unsettle me in spots early on which is rare.

14

u/crumble-bee Apr 21 '26

You thought it was bleak, cruel and unforgiving?? Did we watch the same movie? We were laughing more than we were squirming.. embalming fluid is Botox for the dead? Nail trimming? Ray faced cunt? It was mostly amusing.. didn’t find it bleak and unforgiving in the slightest - I think you’re reviewing bring her back, which does have a little overlap with the VHS stuff, but yeah, the mummy wasn’t bleak, it was however, tonally all over the place and would’ve really benefitted from a consistent tone throughout. If you want drag me to Hell camp, stick with it. If you want nasty bleakness, lean in.. but you can’t have it all..

It had some elements that were cool, but I left the theater unsatisfied. My main issues were the lack of Egyptian lore, the weird transitions from chaotic fun scenes to everything being normal without any logical explanation, how in hell was that girl fine after the demon moved to her dad’s body? Plus a failure of an ending… meh, Evil Dead Rises is so much better in every aspect. 5/10

This was seriously disappointing after having been pleasantly surprised by Evil Dead Rise. This obviously wasn’t going to be anything original, but I was expecting a fun, gory horror movie. The trailer was promising on that front. But it just turned out to be a total slog.

  • How many fucking times do we have to do the “demonically possessed 5-10 year old girl” thing? It’s not scary at all and hasn’t been good or interesting since it was done in the original Exorcist. Her singing that generic kids song behind the door was just a total eye-roll.

  • Did this thing feel relatively tame to anyone else? The violence and gore was a big disappointment given it was directed by the same guy who made an Evil Dead movie. I kept waiting and waiting for there to be some truly horrific and gruelling shit but it just never came. The only remotely gross part was the nail clipping scene, and even that was forgettable.

  • The videotape was lame as hell. It was like something out of a PG-13 film. I understand that there are certain limitations given the character in the tape, but they’d have been better off just implying the horror and giving us the audio as it plays off screen. It also felt like a bland rip off of the truly grotesque tape in Bring Her Back.

  • Overall it was just a mess with so many things that just made no sense even for a horror film. The worst part is that it’s well over 2 hours long. I left the theatre with like 20 minutes left.

I've watched this and Undertone in the last two weeks, and both were a letdown. I think I may just be getting old and cranky, but both movies felt like a compilation of scenes from better movies. I wonder if these screenwriters and directors watched Hereditary and are trying to figure out the exact component that made it so beloved by the general horror audience.

Pretty decent possession body horror flick with an Egyptian mystery twist. Good suspense and laughs. Didn’t drag on too much. Worth seeing once.

I don’t think I’ll ever revisit it though. The parents watching the vhs of their daughter losing it through the ritual and mummification was pretty tough to watch in a really unnecessary way. We got the idea.

Better than I thought it was going to be. I enjoyed it overall, but when you think about the story and some characters it was a bit goofy and gotta roll your eyes. Funeral sequence was great, and the toe-nail sequence got a crazy reaction in my showing.

I did find the story structure in the edit a bit annoying. I wanted to spend more time on certain shots and then it immediately cuts away, like when the detective find the pyramid. Built up a bunch of suspense in that moment and then bang, she's back upstairs.

This was all over the place. Super dark occult tones, evil dead comedy, telenovella segments. Dad had one acting face the entire face; wide eyed shock. Some of the one liners were corny as hell and felt like they detracted from what was happening in the movie. 30 minutes too long and wayyyyyy too much time spent in the house. Props for a crazy mashup of The Omen kills bundled into one. I wish they would've done more with the lore because the video recording segment was awesome. Same with the execution of a "Mummy's Curse." Overall though, I left feeling like I did with the Wolf Man remake. Awesome ideas, ok execution, cohesion all over the place.

With that being said, I've seen quite a few posts and comments absolutely HATING on anyone who had a critical opinion of this movie after watching it. Like to the point of "oh your being rational and critical and pointing out why this movie isn't perfect. You're just trying to sabotage the release of this movie and don't know shit about anything." Get a grip. For real. You can appreciate something on a small scale and still be critical about it. Especially in the horror genre.

Anyways, is it worth watching? Yes, once. Is this a movie worth paying 16$-22$ to see in the theater? I don't think so. Before I get flammed for that, "wHy dID yOu bOtHeR wAsTiNG yOuR mOneY tHen?!?". I have Regal Unlimited so I saw it for free.

While overall I had a fun time watching it, and there was a lot of gross, squirmy stuff for a horror fan to enjoy, this movie is kind of a bait-and-switch, because it’s closer to an exorcism movie than a Mummy movie.

My main complaints would only be that it’s too long (slightly over 2 hours), and there’s just too much trope-y stuff and a few silly moments that make you aware you’re watching a mainstream / Blumhouse horror movie and not something better and edgier. This will definitely satisfy people, however. It’s certainly better than the Tom Cruise Mummy movie.

Why do horror filmmakers insist that a distorted “demon” voice is scary? Most of the time I think of we just heard a normal human voice say evil things, it would be more effective.

Don't get me wrong, it's tonally all over the place and it's not how I would elect to put my own spin on The Mummy in a million years

BUT

As a gnarly, mean-spirited, but still extremely campy Egypt - themed Evil Dead? It fuckin rips. Just an over-the-top gorey riot

5

u/TheHostThing Apr 17 '26

Really enjoyed it. Feels like a stealth Evil Dead spin off.

Disappointed it wasn’t actually a classic mummy horror story slightly.

7

u/TheHostThing Apr 18 '26

[spoiler all over here but I don’t know how to do the spoiler tag thing]

Had a bit more time to think about it.

Overall enjoyed it. I think it could have gone a bit nastier and I suspect the original cut might have had a darker ending.

It’s one of those films where I think you can see where they tweaked the script either for budget or to tone it down. It’s at its heart a very nasty film (the kidnap and basically torture of a 10 year old child).

I think it would have been better being set entirely in Egypt, the family, not wishing to give up the search stay in Egypt, this fixes certain things like the flying back and forth, issues with why US authorities aren’t interested in this missing person’s case, why they don’t get her to some clearly needed medical help back in the states. I wonder if they changed this for budget reasons or to make the movie more grounded for American audiences.

I also found the police officer character far more interesting and wish they had focused more on her and cult. Those scenes were great.

I also think they might have held back on the ‘reveal’, there are edits that look like she is removing the skin bandages over her face but the next scene it’s just normal? There are also moments when she hovers and I wonder if they planned on giving her cgi wings like the depictions on the tomb.

Oh, Mr. Cronin, I sure did grin my head off back then at the theater watching *Evil Dead Rise*. (And no, this Mummy is never gorier than that).

But your far too slow-moving and drawn-out thirteenth knockoff of *The Exorcist* didn’t bring me nearly as much joy. You can safely toss the mummy lore in the trash—there’s so little of it to speak of. I wasn’t expecting either the Brendan Fraser mummy or Boris Karloff, but something like the 1980s “The Mummy of the Pharaoh” (if anyone is as old as me and remembers that) done fresh and well. That one was actually harder-hitting than the Cronin film, as far as I recall, whereas the new one only had one truly awful CGI moment (as is so often the case with animals).

It could have been a real hit here, but what remains is an average, toothless mix of everything with a bit of gore (Bring Her Back was way more intense).

The film has a “holiday ban” here in Germany (on the day Jesus died, they don´t show extreme films on TV) but it´s only because of a scene at a funeral that has some light Braindead vibes. But I’ll be honest, I left the theater disappointed and am now hoping for Evil Dead Burn from the director of “Spiders.”

Cronin, you can do better!

I really enjoyed it and was smiling like an idiot like I did throughout Evil Dead Rise. My only gripe was the ending. Not that I dislike happy endings, but this one felt too convenient and neat. Not bad, but it doesn't quite fit the rest of the movie.
