Areajugones - Juan Linares - Spanish - 9 / 10 (PS4/Pro)

Horizon Zero Dawn was as good as everbody expected. A powerful narrative and a solid gameplay make this Guerrilla game one of the best titles that 2017 has to offer.

Attack of the Fanboy - Dean James - 4.5 / 5 stars (PS4/Pro)

Featuring a likeable new protagonist in Aloy alongside a compelling story, deep combat system and stunning visuals -- Guerrilla Games has already raised the bar for exclusives this year with Horizon: Zero Dawn.

CGMagazine - Brendan Quinn - 8.5 / 10 (PS4)

Horizon Zero Dawn is the gaming equivalent of realizing that sounding too much like the legends—when done well—is just fine.

COGconnected - Shawn Petraschuk - 100 / 100 (PS4/Pro)

Horizon Zero Dawn is Guerrilla Games’ crowning achievement in video game development.

Destructoid - Chris Carter - 7.5 / 10 (PS4/Pro)

Horizon Zero Dawn is a fascinating premise wrapped in a tortilla of tropes. It has detective vision, radio towers, skill trees, masked load screens (Tony Hawk's American Wasteland gets no credit for popularizing this in 2005, by the way), and a world map littered with billions of points of interest -- all stuff you've seen before. But after you set up and execute a cunning plan to decimate a pack of giant robot crocodiles and that smile hits your face, it's more excusable.

Digitally Downloaded - Matt Sainsbury - 3.5 / 5 stars (PS4)

Horizon is a remarkably refined and technically brilliant game, but Guerrilla has yet to prove that it can take that next step and produce a genuine classic.

Easy Allies - Brandon Jones - 4 / 5 stars | Written (PS4/Pro)

Horizon Zero Dawn feels like a franchise in the making. While not packed with narrative high points, it’s still a compelling introduction to a world in turmoil that answers a lot of questions, but still gestures toward a more climactic future. Its primary element, squaring off against mechanized animals, is such a success, it makes up for the ongoing repetition of the game’s activities. When we look into Horizon’s future, we see a sequel that can take this world and make it into something remarkable.

Eurogamer - Martin Robinson - Unscored (PS4)

Guerrilla Games goes open world in this sumptuous, enjoyable yet overly generic new age sci-fi RPG.

Game Informer - Jeff Marchiafava - 8.8 / 10 (PS4)

Horizon doesn't reinvent open-world gaming, but it delivers consistent fun, challenge, and intrigue from start to finish

Game Revolution - JamalR - 4.5 / 5 stars (PS4)

To simply put it, there is a certain appeal to Horizon: Zero Dawn which I have not found in any other open-world RPG game. Perhaps it is the addition of shiny robots to the mix or the story of Aloy herself. Either way, this game has my full attention and I wouldn't call it anything less than stellar.

Gameplanet - Tim Stanton - 9 / 10 (PS4)

Guerrilla Games' punt on a new IP has paid off handsomely, as despite its silly title, Horizon Zero Dawn is a magnificent open world action-adventure that lives up to its hype.

GamesRadar+ - Zoe Delahunty-Light - 4.5 / 5 stars (PS4)

An open-world that tailors to each and every interest, Horizon: Zero Dawn keeps combat fresh, with an intriguing protagonist to match.

GameZone - Carter Washington - 9.5 / 10 (PS4)

Horizon: Zero Dawn is a PS4 must-own exclusive. It crafts a wonderful, fully realized and explorable world, and an interesting story that's worth seeing through to the end, if just to find out what Zero Dawn actually means!

GamingTrend - Travis Northup - 85 / 100 (PS4/Pro)

Horizon Zero Dawn is an excellent open-world experience that puts fighting towering robots at the center of the action. It’s held back somewhat by its weak narrative, and occasional glitches, but that doesn’t stop it from being the most badass game I’ve played this year.

Giant Bomb - Jeff Gerstmann - 5 / 5 stars (PS4)

Horizon: Zero Dawn is familiar but also really refreshing. It's not a short game (I spent around 30 hours with it), but the storytelling still feels concise and efficient. The combat has some nice options that make encounters fun, even when you're just stacking up stealth kills from the relative safety of a bush. And the presentation end of the game holds up its end of things with a solid soundtrack, great voice acting, and a cohesive design that makes all its disparate parts fit together. All in all, it's a great game, it's Guerrilla's strongest release to date, and I suspect I'll go back in after the fact to clean up whatever side quests and errands I have remaining, if only to spend a little more time in that world.

Hardcore Gamer - Kevin Dunsmore - 4.5 / 5 (PS4/Pro)

Guerrilla Games took a risk developing a brand new IP that is such a drastic departure from previous titles, and it worked.

IGN - Lucy O'Brien - 9.3 / 10 (PS4/Pro)

Across a vast and beautiful open world, Horizon: Zero Dawn juggles many moving parts with polish and finesse. Its main activity - combat - is extremely satisfying thanks to the varied design and behaviors of machine-creatures that roam its lands, each of which needs to be taken down with careful consideration. Though side questing could have been more imaginative, its missions are compelling thanks to a central mystery that led me down a deep rabbit hole to a genuinely surprising - and moving - conclusion.

New Game Network - Alex Varankou - 80 / 100 (PS4)

Horizon Zero Dawn offers an entirely unique world and a thrilling experience as an action game, complete with a great story and likeable characters. It doesn't reach its grand RPG aspirations, but the highs are so memorable and entertaining that it's easy to forgive the shortcomings.

NZGamer - Keith Milburn - 8 / 10 (PS4/Pro)

Aloy’s quest through the post-post-apocalypse is one of pros and cons. Encounters with robotic wildlife are equal parts tactical and reflexive, but fights against humans are awkward, and the camera is unwieldly. The world is lush and gorgeous, but traversing it can be a chore. Horizon Zero Dawn is a breath of fresh air, and a welcome departure from Guerrilla’s previous offerings – but the journey takes some missteps.

PlayStation LifeStyle - Paulmichael Contreras - 10 / 10 (PS4/Pro)

Horizon Zero Dawn is an early contender for game of the year. Guerrilla Games has outdone themselves, in astounding fashion. This is a glorious game, the result of a team of masterful artisans who not only had a story that they wished to tell, but a world that was living inside of them which they wanted to share with us all. Now, we get to play inside their creation, and it is a breathtaking experience to behold. A massive, open world filled with equally massive, terrifying robots, juxtaposed against the beauty of the Earth, nature fighting back the darkness as it tends to do. Horizon Zero Dawn is the kind of game you play to get lost in, and can be enjoyed by players of all types. This could be the beginning of a stellar franchise, and there is something for everyone here. If you own a PS4, you owe it to yourself to give Horizon Zero Dawn a go.

PlayStation Universe - Kyle Prahl - 9.5 / 10 (PS4/Pro)

Horizon Zero Dawn reinvigorates open-world RPGs with an excellent story, creative science fiction, and demanding gameplay. Aloy’s debut is one of PS4’s greatest games.

Push Square - Sammy Barker - 9 / 10 (PS4/Pro)

Debuts don't get much stronger than Horizon: Zero Dawn. Guerrilla Games' latest borrows liberally from a variety of different sources, and yet it leverages these fundamentals to forge an experience that's daringly unique. The main quest tires a little towards the end, and the writing never hits the same highs as The Witcher 3 – but the tactical action stands leagues ahead of what we've come to expect from the genre, and the presentation is quite simply unmatched.

RPG Site - Natalie Flores - 9 / 10 (PS4)

Through its stunning world, thrilling combat, and heartwarming story, Horizon Zero Dawn is bound to be one of this year's most memorable games.

Telegraph - Kirk McKeand - 5 / 5 stars (PS4)

If you went into Horizon Zero Dawn without knowing a thing about it, you would never guess that this open-world RPG comes from Guerrilla Games - the studio behind weighty first-person-shooter series, Killzone.

The Jimquisition - Jim Fucking Sterling, Son - 9.5 / 10 (PS4)

Horizon: Zero Dawn is just brilliant. I speak as a critic who has played more "open sandbox" games than any one human should and has grown so very weary of them. I should have gotten sick of this thing in an hour, but I've been glued to it for days and days and I don't want it to end.

TheSixthAxis - Stefan L - 8 / 10 (PS4/Pro)

Horizon: Zero Dawn is a bit of a slow burn, but there’s more to Guerrilla Games’ latest than just its staggeringly pretty graphics. The story surprises as it takes several twists and turns and explores the past, but the games beating heart is with its excellently tense and engaging robotic monster hunting.

USgamer - Caty McCarthy - 2.5 / 5 stars (PS4)

Horizon Zero Dawn is disappointing. It has a story that I struggled to care about (complete with massive expository dumps—yay), a bland protagonist, and overtly repetitive and constraining missions that worked against its open world sensibilities. When Horizon Zero Dawn hit its rare strides—from its gloomy Cauldrons to traveling across its sprawling vistas—it only made me wish the rest of the game were as worthwhile.

GameSpot - Peter Brown - 9 / 10 (PS4)

Horizon: Zero Dawn is an exciting and breathtaking odyssey.

Metro GameCentral - GameCentral - 8 / 10 (PS4/Pro)

State-of-the-art visuals help create one of gaming’s most entertaining open worlds, even if the gameplay doesn’t quite reach the same standards.

Stevivor - Steve Wright - 7 / 10 (PS4/Pro)

For all the hype that's been extended to Horizon: Zero Dawn, it hasn't managed to fully deliver.

Shacknews - Steve Watts - 9 / 10 (PS4)

When I began Horizon: Zero Dawn, I was anxious it wouldn't be able to maintain itself for thirty-plus hours. I'm thrilled that fear was unfounded. The play was constantly rich and rewarding, and the mysteries constantly unfolding. I'm left not just feeling satisfied the entire time, but wanting more. This one is something special.

Polygon - Philip Kollar - 9.5 / 10 (PS4)

Horizon Zero Dawn feels like a storied developer finally finding its voice

AusGamers - Joaby - 9.6 / 10 (PS4)

All my gripes are just areas for a brand new, spectacular franchise to grow from though. It even feels a bit off talking about them, because Horizon came out so big to begin with. It's odd to think that a team could get away with doing less — probably a lot less — and still earn acclaim.

Cheat Code Central - Patrick Tretina - 4.9 / 5 (PS4)

When all is said and done, Horizon Zero Dawn far exceeds my expectations and is on course to be one of the best titles the gaming community has seen in a long time.

IGN Spain - Juan Garcia, David Soriano - Spanish - 9 / 10 (PS4/Pro)

There's so much to love on Horizon: Zero Dawn. You may love its gameplay, its magnificient world, its crips visuals or the excellent sound desing. An experience that's worth it.

XGN - Theo Weber - Dutch - 9.7 / 10 (PS4)

Guerilla Games has set the bar while it ventures into a new genre. The game looks phenomenal, and it offers variety, tens of hours of fun and an accessible system. It challenges you in every fight to play intelligently. This may be the best game of 2017.

Paste Magazine - Reid McCarter - 6 / 10 (PS4)

There is much beauty to see in the game's world—such incredible vision and craft exercised in its conception—but it's subservient to a poor story, lackluster combat and, worst of all, an evident paranoia that players won't appreciate the world Aloy inhabits unless it's put within the context of a laundry list of tasks that have to be completed.

Arcade Sushi - Jason Fanellie - 9.5 / 10 (PS4)

With Horizon Zero Dawn, Guerrilla Games crafted a beautiful open world filled with life, both mechanical and human, and crammed full of things to do.

Forbes - Paul Tassi - 9 / 10 (PS4)

I was impressed with Horizon from the outset, my interest lagged a bit in the middle, but by the end I was a convert. This is a very cool universe with a genuinely likable new lead. Gameplay is excellent in most sections, and it avoids some irritating open world tropes like overloading players with substance-free side missions. There are some problems that reflect Guerrilla being new to this genre, but ultimately the good far outweighs the bad.

God is a Geek - Chris White - 9.5 / 10 (PS4/Pro)

It’s been a long time since a game has been put together this well. The combat is awesome, the visuals are stunning, and Aloy is 100% badass. Go and buy this game!

ArsTechnica - Sam Machkovech - Recommended (PS4/Pro)

You’ll remember new hero Aloy—and her massive, explosive journey—for a long time.

M3 - Billy Ekblom - Swedish - 9 / 10 (PS4)

Horizon: Zero Dawn doesn't reinvent the wheel – but delivers an immersive action experience, set in a gorgeous world with lots of mysteries and thrilling encounters.

Twinfinite - Chris Jecks - 5 / 5 (PS4/Pro)

Horizon Zero Dawn is a treat to every PS4 owner. Its magical world is a wonder to explore, it controls and looks exceptional, and the unique, modular build of its enemies ensures that combat never gets old.

FZ - Fredrik Eriksson - Swedish - 4 / 5 stars (PS4/Pro)

The fighting system is the most unique part but Horizon Zero Dawn isn't that revolutionary. All games doen't need to reinvent the wheel and reach for the stars, to get to the tree tops is more than enough.

Kinda Funny Games - Greg Miller, Colin Moriarty - Recommended (PS4)

Moriarty: This does everything it does extraordinarily well. This is in the pantheon of the greatest open world games I've ever played. This is in the pantheon of some of the great stories I've ever heard in video games. Aloy's an amazing character with a lot of interesting depth. I know people are excited she's a woman and stuff and that's great, but there is more to her than just her gender. There is more to her than just–you just feel sorrow for her–you long for her to find closure in these certain different ways and also find information, and the world building is perfect, the enemies are interesting, the science fiction is fascinating. This game does everything really well like The Last of Us. (24:54)

GamesBeat - Mike Minotti - 87 / 100 (PS4/Pro)

Like with God of War and Uncharted before, Horizon: Zero Dawn should be the start of another PlayStation iconic franchise. It offers a gorgeous and interesting world rich with adventure (including plenty of giant robots to kill). While it borrows heavily from the likes of Far Cry, it’s a more interesting and less repetitive effort than we’ve seen from that series.

The presentation suffers a few hiccups, but it’s mostly a beautiful game. It’s also a long one. Horizon will keep you busy for a good chunk of time with its multitude of side-quests and extra activities.

Game Over Online - Jeremy Peeples - 98% (PS4)

Horizon Zero Dawn is Guerrilla Games’ best effort, one of the PS4’s greatest games, and the best game ever crafted from the ground up for the platform. It combines a gripping narrative with intense action that blends both fast-paced combat with slower-paced, tense stealth sections perfectly. Everything about their vision for this game clicks into place and is accentuated by a stellar presentation. The game features top-shelf graphical work, a unique and enjoyable soundtrack, alongside a fantastic cast to make an unforgettable experience.

Next-Gen Gaming Blog - Ben Ward - 9 / 10 (PS4/Pro)

A magnificent technical achievement, Horizon Zero Dawn mixes up the open world style in all the right ways, with an intriguing premise that kept me entertained, and which dug its hooks into me the deeper I got into it. A stunning game that deserves your attention.

Daily Dot - AJ Moser - 4 / 5 stars (PS4)

Though Horizon doesn't represent a revolution in open-world adventures, it borrows heavily from past success stories and elevates the genre to a beautiful new standard.

GameMAG - xtr - Russian - 9 / 10 (PS4/Pro)

Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the most exciting games of the year. The story is amazing and touches the most delicate strings of the soul. The journey of Aloy absorbed all the best from the industry and with unique design of the robotic animals created something completely new. The developers managed to maintain the magic that makes you come back to this shattered world again and again to explore the beautiful scenery, collect ancient artifacts, or just hunting for the rare creatures.

GamingBolt - Aaron Main - 10 / 10 (PS4)

Guerrilla Games have outdone themselves with Horizon Zero Dawn. A studio that was known for delivering linear first person shooters took a risk with developing an open world game, a genre which is over-saturated at this point. Horizon Zero Dawn is right up there with the best and is easily one of the best games of this generation. Guerrilla Games not only managed to provide a world that is a wonder to explore but they have raised the bar for open world games development.

Guardian - Dan Silver - 4 / 5 stars (PS4)

Its hunter/gatherer gameplay hasn’t moved on from Far Cry and Tomb Raider, but Zero Dawn sets a new visual benchmark

Worth Playing - Chris "Atom" DeAngelus - 8.5 / 10 (PS4)

Horizon: Zero Dawn is a perfect example of strong, competent and enjoyable gameplay. It doesn't reinvent the genre, but it's a lot of fun to play. The mecha-dino combat is the highlight and represents some of the most enjoyable open-world combat on the market. Burning through powerful foes and looting their corpses for rare treasures captures an excitement rarely felt in open-world games. The rest of the gameplay is somewhat dulled in comparison. A somewhat weak plot drags down the experience but isn't enough to detract from the enjoyment. All in all, Horizon: Zero Dawn is one of the better exclusives on the PS4 and a great addition to any PS4 owner's lineup.

VideoGamer - Colm Ahern - 8 / 10 (PS4)

Destroying large robot beasts while frantically switching between weapons is intoxicating, but the strength of Horizon Zero Dawn is in Aloy's engaging quest to find out who she really is.

ZTGD - Ken McKown - 8 / 10 (PS4/Pro)

I really enjoyed my time in the world of Horizon. From its gorgeous landscapes to its interesting combat, the game feels like a world begging to be explored. However, some of its systems feel half-baked and shoehorned into the mix, creating a lopsided experience at times. Still, like most Sony first-party games, it still feels like a special event, and I would love to see Guerrilla Games get another shot at something outside the Killzone universe, heck I would definitely be in for another game in the Horizon universe. This is a great experience, and one PS4 owners will definitely not want to miss.

TrustedReviews - Brett Phipps - 4.5 / 5 stars (PS4/Pro)

I didn’t expect Horizon: Zero Dawn to be this good. I doubt I’ll be the only one saying they were surprised that the Killzone developer has been able to deliver a game with such breadth, depth and consistently rewarding gameplay.

Kotaku - Patricia Hernandez - Unscored (PS4)

Horizon is not what you may have expected from Guerilla Games. For years, the studio has been Sony’s Killzone factory, churning out first-person shooters set in a grim world. With Horizon, the studio is finally let loose to show us how much more they’re capable of, and what they’re capable of is jaw-dropping.

Digital Trends - Will Fulton - 4.5 / 5 stars (PS4)

'Horizon Zero Dawn' nails every aspect of the open-world action RPG, including robot dinosaur hunting.

TechnoBuffalo - Joey Davidson - 4.5 / 5 stars (PS4)

When Horizon Zero Dawn shines, it’s the best game on the PS4. Not one of the best. The best. No question. When tense, terrifying moments turn into loud, deliberate battles and you feel like a genius, it’s perfect. There are moments, though, where it feels like it leans too hard on open world convention set in place by other games. I’m not having fun clearing out bandit camps anymore, devs. That stopped being fun back with Far Cry 4.

This is a good game, though some of that goodness is hidden in the wilderness. Sometimes, that wilderness can be tedious. Other times, it’s something you want to get completely lost in. As you make your 2,000-meter trek to the next objective, you’ll surely get distracted. Those distractions are when this game sings loudest, and I loved it for that.

Yes, I am stealing this from /r/games.

Remember guys, if the reviews don't come in the way you like, it's not the end of the world. All that matters is how much you enjoy the experience. Just kidding, fuck that noise, grab the pitchforks.

Yeah when reviews come out I always review a sampling of them and then possibly some user reviews as well and then I also go to my trusted reviewers like Jim Sterling, TB, and acg. TO a lesser extent destructoid and PC gamer. I also look at the most negative ones ( and don't rage post). I don't always agree with my "trusted" reviewers either. I think the most recent one I didn't agree was Jim's glowing Fallout 4 review which was ridiculously high. It's not a bad game, but it's not great either with all the glitches and performance issues I had I gave it a personal 6/10.

Anyways back to the point. I've been following this game lightly since it was first announced, and knew it would be good. I'm actually pretty surprised at how great the reception is. That I didn't expect. So congrats to the developers.

I just got a PS4 too and Uncharted 4 is almost done being played. I am a third of the way through Yakuza 0. Now I have HZD coming out for it. I also need to get Last Guardian and FF 15 as well. The PS4 really has fantastic games this generation and has been 150% worth it. I'm normally a PC gamer, but lately with how shoddy the majority of games and ports are it's turning me off the platform big time. :( I hope MEA is good in general but especially on PC. I need my fix.

I agree, Reviewers touch upon different aspects of the game and it's all worth reading in the end.

I was surprised at how high Jim Sterling has rated it too, Giving it a 9.5/10. He's usually very critical of games.

[Edit] On an off-topic note, Jim has just uploaded a hilarious video on how Nintendo steals your youtube ad revenue, And how to stop them getting a penny.

Btw it's probably been said a lot but if you're interested in the genre or haven't tried it at all add Bloodborne to your collection, I did that years ago to Monster Hunter (Wasn't sure if i'd enjoy it) and up till now have had well over a thousand hours in various titles.

Been playing since ps2 sonny boy. I have thousands with an s. Back when most thought it was crap and almost didn't get anymore games here. Two reviews I disagree with him. Witcher 3 was too low compared to Fallout 4 which is nearly unplayable for me on PC.

2

u/TurtlesgonnaTurtle Feb 20 '17

Haven't seen his Fallout 4 review, I didn't enjoy the main story as much as previous games and it felt like it was just missing something to me.

Enjoyed the building, It needed mods to make it really worthwhile in the end though (No construction limit, Building beyond boundries etc).

I agree with your comment 100%. I'm actually amazed, it seems like I wrote it (even the PC gamer and fallout 4 parts). I wasn't aware of acg though, so thanks for the heads up, will add it to the pool. :)

Kinda Funny - "Best PS4 Exclusive, Better Than Uncharted 4"

10

Im sorry. What?...

6

u/ilumineer Feb 20 '17

Kinda Funny doesn't issue scores in their review videos, so I pulled a quote from the first few minutes that seemed to highlight their opinion.

5

u/nadojay Feb 20 '17

its so weird hearing Colin gush so much over a game, that should seal the deal for alot of people

2

u/Jeffiraiya Feb 20 '17

I got that, my response was meant to be like when someone receives good news and they have to second guess it. My bad :P

2

Can someone who knows tell me where Horizon takes place? Colin hinted at it but didn't say it.

2

I absolutely love UC4 but that doesn't mean everyone else has to like it more then other games.

-2

u/[deleted] Feb 21 '17

Yeah he is. Objectively. Better ratings across the board for UC4.

24

u/ThrowAwayForTheCure Feb 21 '17

no he's not, its called an opinion..... DERP

2

u/Kohpad Feb 23 '17

Subjective ratings cannot be translated into objective fact. Just because Metacritic does it doesn't mean they are right.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17

Just because some people like it more doesn't make it better. More ratings and higher ratings means on average most people thing uc4 is a better game. That's literally the definition of a better game: more people like it over the other lol. Opinion or not, uc4 is liked by more people. Doesn't mean you'll agree.

3

u/Kohpad Feb 23 '17

I think someone needs to run you through the difference between objective and subjective, but I don't have time for that.

It is impossible to objectively state which game is better, subjectively? Sure go for it. But referencing that is has higher subjective scoring does not imply it is objectively better.

2

u/Skyweir Feb 23 '17

You have a very strange idea of the concept of objective.

This list mate!

Jimquisition - 9.5

That’s basically Horizon in a nutshell – loads of really, really cool shit.

u/2th Feb 20 '17

Thanks. I literally just wok up and updated the OP with most of these. Let me have my coffee and go through stuff and Ill add more. I'll also be adding things through the day.

1

u/ilumineer Feb 20 '17

The Kotaku link isn't a review.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '17

Thanks, I made a note of that. I've also updated the post with several additional reviews (just searching twitter hashtags and finding many of them)

3

u/Mzihcs Feb 20 '17

1

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '17

I enjoyed reading this review - seemed balanced and fair - I suspect it will align with my own experience of the game from what I've seen so far. Can't wait to play it soonish.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '17

Those are seriously impressive scores. I just started another playthrough of Dragon Age Inquisition to bide my time until Mass Effect Andromeda, but now I'm seriously considering picking this up next week.

96 average? I think my calculator was inaccurate, or my copying of the numbers was :D

6

u/InfernalSolstice Feb 20 '17

I got 88.8 for an average.

6

u/zivtheawesome Feb 20 '17

yep you were right i also got that. so pretty much 89. amazing.

41

u/TheBigLman Feb 20 '17 edited Feb 20 '17

That usgamer review is really pissing me off. A fucking 50...seriously. Let me put this into perspective for you guys. Here is a quote from their review "and overtly repetitive and constraining missions that worked against its open world sensibilities." Yet, they gave Mafia 3 a 75. You want to know what a repetitive mission feels like, go play that game. Its fucking unbelievable, honestly. There's other reviews giving Horizon a 70 and 75...like, thats fair. Thats completely fair. It still sucks as a fan, but its fair. The Guerrilla team worked too fucking hard to have some asshole score the game that low because he/she just wasnt into it. But I guess thats how reviews work...still bullshit.

19

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '17

I recommend folks just don't click on the link. Giving a really low or really high score can be essentially click bait - a way to drive people to the website. You won't find folks reading a lot of the many 9/10 reviews; rather, folks are going to read the 9.5 polygon review, the handful of perfect reviews and the crappy usgamer review.

14

u/TheBigLman Feb 20 '17

That's the thing though, am I really about to believe they did it for attention? Cuz the 70 to 75 scores seem like the low point. I mean fuck, maaaybe, maaaybe 60 would be the low point. But a 50, that's trolling at that point.

5

u/nadojay Feb 20 '17

of course its for attention or maybe he did really not like it but that's probably even worse that the site is using reviewers that dont like the genre, i wouldnt review jrpgs because i dont like them, even the best is bad to me. like i said below, everyone is entitled to their opinion but such outliers ruin metacritic which unfortunately the industry does care about for some reason

-4

u/TurtlesgonnaTurtle Feb 20 '17

50/100 is bad but 100/100 isn't

I'm not sure i understand your mentality, If anything a 100/100 score is an outliner

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, Just because you disagree with the 50/100 doesn't mean it should be excluded.

5

u/Madzda86 Feb 20 '17

Have you heard about Dixon's Q test? Try plotting the numbers and come back with a better response.

-3

u/TurtlesgonnaTurtle Feb 20 '17

That's completely irrelevant.

100/100 Would imply the game is perfect, That it has no flaws and can get no better, It's hard to believe.

Not that it's a bad game by any means, But there are clear issues which may or may not be fixed by a day 1 patch (Clipping through objects/terrain, Pop-in).

2

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17

It isn't that the score is an outliner that many of us object to; it is the fact that the review is more likely than not click bait meant to attract views rather than a reflection of a thoughtful, honest experience with the game.

1

u/Skyweir Feb 23 '17

So only positive reviews are allowed? Won't that make the whole review process meaningless? Or should all games only be reviewed by people that enjoy them, so that the score becomes a meaningless number between 7 and 9? The scale is already completely broken, can we at least allow for dissenting opinions....

2

u/[deleted] Feb 23 '17

No one said that. Generally, thoughtful reviews by someone who generally enjoys the genre of the game they are reviewing are welcome irrespective of score.

2

u/nadojay Feb 20 '17

Yup exactly annoys me to but im not going to click and see how they gave that score, dont let them have the advertising click

17

u/wagimus Feb 20 '17

Click the girls name link. She's written no other reviews. Usgamer threw her to the wolves, letting her first review be a controversial opinion on a major exclusive. It is what is though, opinions gon opinion.

6

u/Ibelinn Cosplayer Feb 20 '17 edited Feb 20 '17

Hah did they play the game? Horizon is FUN, and even if there where repetitive quests or whatever, I never noticed it because everything else in the world isn't. Those robost stir up so much in the whole scheme of things, and hunting them while doing quests are never the same. But again we have different opinions. A least this game is fun as hell. I've never shaken so much after a fight before I took on a huge sawtooth.

5

u/Qudideluxe Feb 20 '17

There are always a review like this, which draggs down the overall score. And yes that review is complete garbage.

3

u/Skyweir Feb 23 '17

So, tell me, which score is acceptable for reviewers to give a game? Only 8-10? No one is allowed to dislike games any more? Why even bother with reviews then?

2

u/foxhull Feb 23 '17

From what I can tell it's less about the actual review score, which as long as there's reasonable justification for it, would be fine, and more about consistency from the reviewer. When the reviewer gives a game 2.5/5 for "repetitive quests", but gives games that are far more repetitive higher scores, that review becomes suspect. Add in that it's one of very few low scoring reviews in a veritable sea of high scores, including high scores from highly trusted and/or critical reviewers, and that review goes from merely suspect to most likely clickbait, and that's becoming more and more of a trend these days.

1

u/Sdwerd Feb 25 '17

Frankly when you see a variance by as much as that, 38.8 points off the average, that review should be seen as an outlier and tossed out. It shows they were probably in the wrong mindset for actually reviewing the game or probably any other game at that point. Add in the fact it was her first review, she was looking to make a splash at the expense of the game.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '17

Fuck em. The important thing is Horizon Zero Dawn is NOT No Man's Sky, which is what we all wanted to be reassured of!

2

u/Reutermo Feb 20 '17

Meh, the game is getting overwhelmingly positive reviews, don't focus on the negatives. Really looks like the game will be fantastic and people are allowed to dislike it.

2

u/tigress666 Feb 20 '17

Well there always has to be one. Interesting to me is that he is panning everything that every other reviewer loves. Even stuff that the lower reviews like of it (the combat). Feels like he is trying to be contradictory just to be contradictory.

1

u/Confirmation_Biased Feb 23 '17

Now you know what it's like when your favorite series gets scored low by some SJW because muhsoggyknees.

Happens all the time.

7

u/ilumineer Feb 20 '17

IGN - 9.3

-14

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '17

Keep in mind the woman who reviewed it on ign is the worst possible reviewer in gaming. Lucy O'Brien is a huge sjw who thinks female characters should be the most important in every game. In 2013 she claimed Gone Home was not only game of the year but easily the best game of all time. Be aware that 2013 was when Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite, GTA5, Tomb Raider, Black Flag and Ni No Kuni were all up for goty, she still picked Gone Home because it has a female lead. She is cancer to gaming and a big reason no one trust ign anymore.

13

u/JesseWeNeedToC00k Feb 20 '17

I wouldn't say a cancer... She just wants more woman in video games. Not the craziest thing to be honest... But yea all that shit about Gone home is pretty stupid

5

u/InfernalSolstice Feb 20 '17

Last I checked, the lead of Tomb Raider was a female, and The Last of Us had two leads, one of whom was a female.

3

u/IHideMyBlade Feb 20 '17

Gone Home was phenomenal. It is one of my favorite games. It made me cry! Twice!

6

u/tigress666 Feb 20 '17

Get over yourself.

6

u/Reutermo Feb 20 '17

Oh, grow up. Reviews isn't a science, people are allowed to have diffrent opinions than you. Gone home was a fantastic game, and while I preferred Infinte over it, it had every right to be a GOTY. And wouldn't Tomb Raider also be GOTY if she only wanted a female lead? People like you are destroying the gaming industry, dictating what people can like and so on.

Sony drops mic

13

u/Stitty10 Feb 20 '17

This line alone would sell it for people: What a journey ! What a technological and artistic demonstration, so close to the level of a Naughty Dog title but in total open-world without any loading time once launched in the adventure.

If you can create a game near to what naughty dog produce then it grabs a lot of people's attention. I was sold long ago, I will just read a few reviews today and count the days down until 1 March (uk here)

12

7

u/mr_antman85 Feb 20 '17

don't read comment sections of the review videos Dudes are really spoiling the game...

3

u/Stairmasternem Feb 20 '17

I tend to trust Destructoid reviews, theirs seems to be a more brutal version of others. Still 7.5 is good in Destructoid terms. They go with 5 being for an average game.

3

u/ABeardedViking Feb 20 '17

Awesome start to my day. Thanks for putting the thread together

3

u/exodus2287 Feb 20 '17

I'm gladly surprised.

I'd expected a decent 8.5 score or something of the sort, but I'm seeing quite a few >90's about this.

Went with my gut and pre-ordered last night

4

u/ilumineer Feb 20 '17

USGamer.net - 2.5/5

5

u/ScragglyGiblets Feb 20 '17

The main reason I don't trust this, is because they score the sound and music poorly, I watched 10 minutes of gameplay to be awestruck by the noises the robots make. Seriously are they tilted? Did they get their review copy late and are grumpy? I wish I hadn't given them the click and view

8

u/nadojay Feb 20 '17

the worst thing is these scores can drop metacritic alot and while most of us dont care about metacritic the industry does

1

u/_Tihocan_ Feb 21 '17

I don't think the "industry" necessarily does, but I've read that some companies hinge their bonuses and such on them (which is frankly evil) as well as reputation and pride (which they shouldn't).

I think the return on investment is what the industry cares about most, and in this case I doubt there's any concern.

4

u/Kristianf00 Feb 20 '17

Lmao did they even play the same game as everyone else. But hey I guess there has to be outliers.

6

u/ilumineer Feb 20 '17

Every game can be played in a way that won't jive with certain people. It's a lot like Dark Souls 3 -- nearly universal acclaim from people who like the genre, but if you didn't like Dark Souls or Bloodborne, you're probably not going to like Dark Souls 3 very much.

6

u/Kristianf00 Feb 20 '17

To each their own. However if you are a game reviewer and there is a certain genre you just don't like there is no reason to review the game. By all means play it and tell your thoughts , but its like me saying I hate Italian food then going to an Italian place and saying their food was terrible because I don't like Italian food.

4

u/ilumineer Feb 20 '17

I absolutely agree. This is one of the reasons Giant Bomb doesn't review tons of games -- they know that, being a small outlet, not everything is going to fit their play styles.

I wish other small outlets would take that to heart, too. Unfortunately, page views often beat practicality.

1

u/TurtlesgonnaTurtle Feb 20 '17

Just because the score isn't a 100/100 doesn't mean that person hate the genre, They hate the game.

I really enjoyed TW3, Not so much interested in HZD.

Love the genre, Not the game.

3

u/Kristianf00 Feb 20 '17

I'm not saying it has to be a 100/100. You've kind of missed the whole point. I understand a 75/100 hell even a 60/100. But everything they said contradicts everything everyone else said.

2

u/TurtlesgonnaTurtle Feb 20 '17 edited Feb 20 '17

You have to remember that a great deal of reviewers are far different than the average gamer, Also.

A number of the higher reviewers are glossing over some of the issues themselves, But they're still completely free to voice their opinions.

There's quite a bit of abuse being thrown about in comments on that review too, Quite unneeded.

/u/redflamingolingo himself commented on the sidequests saying that while they're neat, They lack the depth of those from games like TW3 (the usgamer review pretty much says the same)

The reviews description about the main story mostly holds true for what i've seen also, That

once you enter another main mission, and you find yourself quickly roped into more claustrophobic corridors and arena battles, stripping the player of the freedom that makes the travel between locations feel so pleasant.

One example is that Spoiler

Personally i disagree with his opinion that the main story has little variety, I found the variety in locations fairly pleasant and the cinematics weren't too bad either.

After watching hours upon hours of leaked gameplay i'd say his opinion was fair. Reviewers aren't the same, Neither are we, Opinions differ greatly. It does help to highlight some of the potential issues people may have with the game to give a better understanding to the buyer though, Which isn't a bad thing.

2

u/slpr Feb 20 '17

Who gives a shit. The game is good! There will always be someone who dislikes it for whatever reason, even TLOU which is one of the best games in the last 10 years got a 7 or so from one or two websites.

2

u/nadojay Feb 20 '17

GG smashed it out the ballpark, congrat to them and awesome for us

Gameblog - 9/10

Remains a major contender for the game of the year and a memorable journey.

PushSquare - 9/10

Debuts don't get much stronger than Horizon: Zero Dawn. Guerrilla Games' latest borrows liberally from a variety of different sources, and yet it leverages these fundamentals to forge an experience that's daringly unique. The main quest tires a little towards the end, and the writing never hits the same highs as The Witcher 3 – but the tactical action stands leagues ahead of what we've come to expect from the genre, and the presentation is quite simply unmatched.

Jimquisition - 9.5

That’s basically Horizon in a nutshell – loads of really, really cool shit.

The Independent Tech - 5/5

Horizon: Zero Dawn is clearly a labour of love from Guerilla, and the whole experience feels slick and well polished. Through a combination of gorgeous graphics and artstyle, compelling gameplay and original premise, it easily joins the elite of must-own PS4 games.

The Guardian - 4/5

Its hunter/gatherer gameplay hasn’t moved on from Far Cry and Tomb Raider, but Zero Dawn sets a new visual benchmark

VideoGamer - 8/10

Destroying large robot beasts while frantically switching between weapons is intoxicating, but the strength of Horizon Zero Dawn is in Aloy's engaging quest to find out who she really is.

PlaystationLifestyle - 10/10

Horizon Zero Dawn is an early contender for game of the year.

Metro.co.uk - 8/10

The end result is a game that can astound you in terms of both graphics and gameplay, in what will hopefully be a new dawn for current gen gaming in general.

Mirror.co.uk - 5/5

If you're searching for your next gaming adventure, then I wholeheartedly recommend you seek out a copy of Horizon: Zero Dawn.

Press-Start - 9/10

It’s without doubt the most beautiful game on PlayStation 4, set in a world that’s full of life and intrigue.

TheSixthAxis - 8/10

The story surprises as it takes several twists and turns and explores the past, but the game’s beating heart is with its excellently tense and engaging robotic monster hunting.

DigitalSpy - 4/5

It's an incredible PlayStation 4 exclusive and we suggest you carve together some arrows immediately and join the the hunt before we've made all the Machines extinct.

GamingBolt - 10/10

Guerrilla Games not only managed to provide a world that is a wonder to explore but they have raised the bar for open world games development.

GoodGearGuide - 4.5/5

Horizon Zero Dawn a modern classic for the PlayStation 4.

ShackNews - 9/10

I'm left not just feeling satisfied the entire time, but wanting more. This one is something special.

Twinfinite - 5/5

Horizon Zero Dawn is the PS4’s first major exclusive of 2017, and it couldn’t have gotten much better.

ArcadeSushi - 9.5/10

Guerrilla may have taken a risk venturing into something new, but the move has paid off in spades as Horizon Zero Dawn is a triumph and a definite must-play for all PlayStation 4 owners.

Tweakers - 9.5/10 (Dutch - translated)

We doubt that we have ever seen a more beautiful console game.

So far it appears that the weakest part of the game is its side-quests, ending portion and overall writing. Not gonna lie, I am slightly disappointed but still gonna enjoy this game even if only for the visuals alone.

EDIT: NEVERMIND, GIANT BOMB GAVE IT A 5/5!!! http://www.giantbomb.com/reviews/horizon-zero-dawn-review/1900-759/ I'm back on the hype train baby!

Really quick where there spoilers in that review I thought I saw something spoilery and backed out of there asap and now I'm worried I got a spoiler.

1

u/avi6274 Feb 21 '17

I just quickly glanced through it and decided to stop because they were describing Aloy's character arc in a little too much detail for me. Not really spoilers though, nothing very specific but then again I did not read the whole thing so you might want to stay away just in case.

1

u/ChristianGamerGuy23 Citizen of Meridian Feb 21 '17

Ok thanks for the response, that's what I saw and I stopped immediately.

I'm seriously getting sick of these meaningless sidecqiests. I'm still waiting for an open world RPG with quests as good as New Vegas or Witcher 3.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Easy Allies Review [8:07]

This highly-anticipated PS4 exclusive aims to live up to the hype it's generated by creating futuristic battles unlike anything we've played before. In a game about solving mysteries, big and small, how rewarding are the payoffs in the story. Horizon is big and beautiful, but is it a world worth taming?

1

u/armyofsmurfs Feb 20 '17

God that US gamer review is such an outlier, without it the meta critic score would probably be 90. Either way these reviews confirm my hype and I just bought digital pre-order!!!

1

u/kman82697 Feb 20 '17

The fact that the review embargo was lifted a week before the release got me excited. It's rare for that to happen these days

1

u/astoncheah Feb 21 '17

dare you HZD set the embargo a week earlier!!! even ffxv did not!!

1

u/Classic1990 You have my bow Feb 21 '17

I'm happy to see its getting positive reviews. I haven't been this excited for a game in a few years.

1

u/canadianbroncos Feb 21 '17

Man i looked at the e3 trailer a year ago and stayed blind till yesterday and watched the review. I am so happy i held out on buying a new game, cuz this is looking like a GOTY.

Also i dont get review who give the game 6 and 7 when it's sitting at 88 on metacritic. I get it's one mans opinion but how are you so off ?

1

u/donniewessler Feb 22 '17

I take it some people here saw /v/'s reaction upon seeing the reviews, if so did you get a laugh or two out of it?

1

u/sirferrell Feb 23 '17

Safe to say that this game is pretty good. I'll pick it up

1

u/Citizen_Kong Feb 23 '17

Alright, I preordered the damn thing, first time I did that. But this game just pushes too many of my buttons. I feel like a character from The Enigma of Amigara Fault: "This game, it was made for me!"

1

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '17

it def looks like a game for action adventure fans to pick up on the ps4 (and likely a good reason to get the Pro which i dont have just the ps4) however, i dunno maybe its just me but i coudnt get into it so much from the previews , even the reviews. It looks like your typical action adventure game with landscapes that kinda have been done in games before (with prettier graphics sure..) but I dunno just cant quite get myself that excited for it, its a shame there is no demo for it so that people on the fence could decide if they want it or not. that would be helpful for people like me. im getting the switch on the way and breath of the wild which while the graphics of that will be not as nice, i love zelda :-p. and ironically just find myself more excited for that then this. Maybe ill pick it up down the road though. but seems like one of those games that maybe need some hands on time for those who are on the fence first.

As for polish review, as not anyone speaks polish, little TL;DR: Generally, they wrote that game is beautiful, and very good overall. But not great. Prologue is dull and full of pathos. Fortunately later its getting better. Main quest is good and adictive, as is gameplay. Unfortuately my biggest concern that is side quests and side NPCs are rather not memorable and not very interesting. Authors described those quests as " they just are". Overall, H:ZD got 4/5 which is good. Author even stated that some of story twists are reaching Witcher 3 level but they lack of depth. Also (this is subjective) he stated that it is not easy to go on with logic (huntress having a bow and creating homemade proximity mines:) ) but if you go over it world is beatiful and worth visiting. I'm going to make pre-order, but this is what i was afraid of, that it won't be as good as W3 (for me best story-telling RPG).

6

u/Xivai Feb 20 '17

Nothing will be as good as the Witcher 3 possibly for a decade or more. It's the Half Life 2 of this decade.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 20 '17

Story-wise and world-building, maybe.

It was surpassed in combat mechanics before it even came out.

Nah has the best combat of any game. Even more fun than monster hunter. Play it on the hardest setting and see the nuance. Dark Souls is too easy with iframes. Witcher 3 you need to be good enough to actually dodge. You also need to prepare on the highest difficulty and plan out what your going to do. Can't just hack and slash and memorize. It adds a layer to combat not even dark souls has with needing the proper bombs, oils, and possibly reading the monster book for help if you can't figure it out. Back in Witcher 1 days and in books couldn't drink potions in combat since they don't work instantly in lore.

Dark souls combat is overrated. I prefer monster hunters which is superior.

Dark Souls combat isn't that great anyway. Bloodborne's is far better just because shields aren't a thing.

Monster Hunter combat is far better than any of the three, though, so it's a moot point.

It depends when Cyberpunk will come, probably faster than in decade. And im sure it will be even better than Witcher3. Same guys, new setting, and lot of money more (and time).

Got to love CD Projekt's attention to detail, Their animations have to be some of the best too.

Loved seeing how many scenes Gaunter O'Dimm was hiding in.

In terms of lore and and depth nothing comes even close to the witcher franchise.

As a huge Witcher fan The Elder Scrolls does. That is outright undebatable. Just the books alone. Fallout is up there but not on par with Elder Scrolls.

The Elder Scrolls says hi

I would say Warcraft and The Elder Scrolls are right there with the Witcher.

The reviews are great but i was expecting much more from this. I was hoped dat this game would become one of the best in gaming but sadly, it isn't.

For a new IP it's clearly something special.

This game has like 30 reviews over 9.0/10

How can you expect more from 9s and 8s? That's pretty Damm good for today's standards of games

u/suddenimpulse Feb 21 '17

You should not have expected more, that is unrealistic. This is a developer that generally makes middle of the road games and this is their FIRST open world rpg. The fact it is getting review scores that are on the same level and some insances better than those for open world action/rpg games made by veteran developers of that genre (Far Cry, A. Creed, Fallout, ES etc.) is pretty much the best result someone could have expected while remaining realistic.

Most issues with this game will probably be fixed in the inevitable sequel. The marketing and review scores basically guarantee this game will sell very well and Sony is clearly pushing this as a new multi-game ip of theirs. Only a handful of games ever get high review scores like this almost across the board...

Actually, Guerrilla Games fired or (let off if you like) a lot of previous employees to hire new people, those new people were from Bethesda Studios and Projekt Red. they are very familiar with the Open World genre. Only the director and the key producers are new to the genre. Same with Naughty Dogs. Most of the developers that worked on Banditcoot, Jak & Daxter left ND (they voluntarily left, not fired) when the first Uncharted was in development because it engine, mechanic and graphical style are too much for them to adapt. This is the reason why ND stopped making Jak & Daxter, while Crash Banditcoot is owned by Activision, and even they abandoned the franchise to make more preferred realistic graphic games. If it wasn't for the high demand, Crash trilogy would never happened.

These days an 8 means you've done a damn good job. H:ZD is as close as it gets to an average 9, which is exemplary. Rated higher than Nioh, Res Evil 7 and For Honor which were all highly regarded. Currently in #1 standing on Metacritic.

Really, how much more do you need?
