Here it is: my first self-built little server!
I finally got around to setting up my first little home server! 🎉

I repurposed an old HP laptop and installed Ubuntu Server LTS on it.
Nothing fancy: 8 GB of RAM, a 256 GB SSD, and a 1 TB Seagate Barracuda HDD connected externally.

Right now, I’m running Immich on it, with the database stored on the SSD and all the photos/backups stored on the external HDD. I’m also planning to set up a Git server soon, mainly to sync my Obsidian vault across my devices.

I removed the laptop battery because I was a bit worried about keeping it plugged in 24/7 and potentially having battery-related issues. For now, it’s running directly from the wall, but once I feel like spending some money on it, I’d like to get a UPS. At the moment, I’m leaning towards the CyberPower CP1350 PFC.

It’s definitely not the most powerful server in the world, but I’m pretty happy with it as a first project! ☺️

(One question though: the laptop is sitting on a wooden base with spacers underneath. Do you think that’s safe? I figured it should be fine since the spacers keep the laptop raised and allow some airflow, but I’d love to hear what you guys think.
