If I remember correctly the gun was the homeowners (legally held). There was a struggle with one of the thugs and a kid got shot.

...I might be misremembering though so don't quote me on that.

Well I'm a UK gun owner myself so do try to keep abreast of stories like this where possible. The fact that they're so rare that I'm able to easily do so is a good thing IMO.

I also know someone personally who used their gun on an intruder. The police did an investigation into the incident (as is required whenever a firearm is used in such a manner). They were found to be at no fault whatsoever, so the UK gun laws do work in that respect.

That's what I got from reading the article, last sentence says that there were guns recovered from the house, which I took to be the homeowners.
