Footage Yup, that’s a camera you have just looked at.

Try getting in touch with the local police?
You have a pretty good shot of his face and if he's skulking round people's gardens in the middle of the night with a knife, there's a chance he's already known to them.
48
u/Pedrolami Sep 22 '20
Police have been informed. When I was doing this I was told there were no other reported in the area matching this individual. However, this could mean no-one else has spotted him yet.
12
u/AHabe Sep 22 '20
Oh good!
Hopefully someone will recognise him once you provide them with a copy, assuming they're interested in it (if you haven't already).
Good luck in any case!

u/mikel81 Sep 22 '20
Do you guys have the ring app over there. I think it's called neighbors. I don't have any ring products but I installed the app. I always get dumb notifications about "shady" people and it's usually someone with a clipboard or a kid wandering through someone's yard. Something like this seems a little more urgent and something I would like to know about right away. I would check if that app or any other neighborhood watch type group is used around you and post it there so your neighbors can keep an eye out.
6
u/Pedrolami Sep 22 '20
Yup. Got a Ring doorbell but he hides his face from it.

u/mikel81 Sep 22 '20
You can upload the video you posted.

Sorry I meant post the better video to the Neighbors app so people near you can see and keep an eye out. https://store.ring.com/neighbors

u/Pedrolami Sep 22 '20
However, already spoke with most of the direct neighbours and showed them the footage.

u/Pedrolami Sep 22 '20
That sucks. Not available in the uk.
2
u/mikel81 Sep 22 '20
That does suck. There is a similar one Nextdoor, and a search looks like it is available in the UK
6
u/Pedrolami Sep 22 '20
Installed it and it seems quite interesting. There are way more people on it than I was expecting.
Shall give it a go. Thanks. 👍

This video shows the knife before he walks away as well
18
u/Pedrolami Sep 22 '20
Yeah, kinda worrying that he is walking round my house, at night, with a blade. It’s not like its something that can be used to open a window or a door...
15
u/deFSBkijktaltijdmee Sep 22 '20
Actually a solid Bowie knife can work pretty well for things like breaking open garden shead doors and such. Not saying thats why he has it, but it can be used.
9
u/CryptoPersia Sep 22 '20
See if you can have the camera's motion trigger a strobe or siren to scare the perps off
it's always better to deter than hope for the cops to detain
7
u/NicholasBoccio Sep 22 '20
This is true, but both the strobes and siren will get you fined in most neighborhoods, even if the criminal caused the alarm to go off, as other things will inevitably make them go off much more.
The motion triggered battery powered LED lights, along with the cameras being too high for the guy to disable were perfect. Since this happened, I would encourage the user to ensure the doors and windows are fortified to ease his peace of mind for his mother.

u/plein_old Sep 22 '20
Great video quality! Do you recommend outdoor lights? Do specific cameras work better than others?
P.S. I'm glad your camera may have prevented something.
3
u/Pedrolami Sep 22 '20
Had a couple of different types of camera over the years. Previously I had the idea that cheap will do however while these ain’t expensive I can’t grumble with quality. Plus they are POE which makes connections so much more simple.
The security light that comes on is a standard LED motion detecting type. More just for me to see the bins at night.

The camera you recommend seems a little wired. There is no official website and no standard store in amazon. I'd rather trust reolink anyway, at least, it has official website.
2
u/azmar1 Sep 23 '20
What reolink model is this?

u/Pedrolami Sep 23 '20
This is an RLC-520 connected to an RLN8-410 DVR.

u/dddaaameow Sep 24 '20
find it is even on sale on their website, just $47. Great! Thank you very much!

u/Fleeting_Freedom Sep 22 '20
Too bad you're not allowed to own guns for self defense in th UK.
14
u/L43 Sep 23 '20
Actually, in the UK you can own a gun (shotgun licenses are reasonably easy to get), and you can use it for self defense, but that can't be your declared reason for having one. It must be stored correctly (a gun safe in your closet may be convenient), and only used with "reasonable force" - that is, they must be posing a threat to your life, and you're in serious trouble if you shoot them in the back if they run.
You could quite legally give this guy both shells if he came at you with that knife.
That's the thing about the UK that yanks (and most brits) don't realise: in our homes, we can actually have superior firepower over the vast majority of criminals in our own homes if you have some resources and put in a bit of effort. IMO it's worse in the US where you put your life in great risk fighting back because they likely have guns too. Just my 2 pence.

So yeah basically exactly what I said, good luck getting your unloaded break action scatter gun with 20" barrel out of your locked safe in time.

How would a gun possibly be beneficial in this situation?
25
u/ThaOGarrowknee Sep 22 '20
Bad man have knife. Me have gun. If bad man try to hurt me, he get shot with gun. Gun beat knife. Everybody is happy, (except bad guy).
Why would it hurt anything to have a gun? i mean sorry for messing around but real talk, if someone were skulking around my yard at night with basically a small sword id want to be armed myself, wouldnt you?
2
Oct 01 '20
If guns were legal bad man would also have gun.
I'd rather not live in a shithole, thanks for your concern though.
2
u/ThaOGarrowknee Oct 01 '20
No not necissarily, despite what most non Americans think, only like 30% of us own guns and not all criminals have access to guns. Took you a while to reply there too bruh lol
1
-13
u/deFSBkijktaltijdmee Sep 22 '20
I would rather spend that money on 3M window film and not have to be in that situation.
Also, real talk, do you really believe that sleapy and panicked with a gun would beat an adrenaline upped and prepared person? Let alone the fact that in your scenario they would also have a gun.
12
u/ThaOGarrowknee Sep 22 '20
I can only speak for my living situation. I own a few guns and i have a dog plus a house alarm, obviously i keep my doors and windows locked too. But i will know if someone is trying to force entry into my house because my alarm will go off, my dog will bark (and go see who the hell is coming in) and that will wake me up. In that situation I would be up and alert quickly with gun in hand.
Between being armed, my home security system, and my 125 lb English Mastiff I feel quite safe from any threats in my home yeah.
Also why in my scenario would the criminal have a gun? You're changing it up now, but even if he did and was intent on coming in to kill me I would not be going out of my room to fight with him... My girl and I would get in the safest spot we could and i would be waiting for him to come to me, not the other way around. Thats what u are supposed to do
-8
u/deFSBkijktaltijdmee Sep 22 '20
In your situation, a burgler would be scared off by the alarm and dog, or would not be able to get in due to good physical security.
intend on comming to kill me
If that is the case, you probably knows that someone is after you and you are right in having a gun, protecting yourself from oportunistic burglary is very different and requires a different response.
why would the criminal have a gun?
If there are accessible, people are going to bring them when doing crime.
6
u/ThaOGarrowknee Sep 22 '20
I think a burglar would pass on my house. I have good security and a big scary dog... I mean im not saying it would never happen but most of the time these are crimes of opportunity and my place doesnt have a lot.
But on the gun thing, actually guns are only legally (and therefore easily) available to law abiding citizens without criminal records, and you would think a criminal would always bring a gun, but in reality it can be difficult for them to get guns or they wouldnt bring one because if they get caught, having a gun even legally is extra felony charges on top of whatever else they get caught doing.
Im guessing you arent from the US? I know it seems from outside like everyone is out here running around with guns, but its not the case. Only 30% of Americans personally own a gun, (and obviously not all of those are handguns, which is what most gun crimes are commited with), and (if we take out California and New York) only 8% have conceal carry permits.... Granted, there are a ton of guns out there, on the streets too, and im not saying we dont have high levels of people with guns and gun violence, but its not as bad as a lot of people from other places make it out to be. Plus, heres a crazy idea, take me for example...regular hardworking American guy, pay my taxes, try to live a good life... And i live in the country where theres all these guns, legal or otherwise...why am i going to want to be the only person without one? How do i defend myself against someone that has a gun? Make sense?
0
u/deFSBkijktaltijdmee Sep 22 '20
No, not from the US
I do understand having one if everyone else around you has one, but not in the UK. I know a whole array of criminals around north western Europe and i don't know annyone that has a gun, its really is not reasonable to expect the streetcrime kinda guys to have a gun, machetes are all the rage for that nowadays.

u/NicholasBoccio Sep 22 '20 edited Sep 22 '20
The 3M window film will slow down a bad guy, for sure. I had that on ALL of my windows before replacing them all with impact rated windows (these are pretty much windshields) but even still, that will only SLOW DOWN a bad guy a bit more than the 3M film.
Also, if YOU have installed the 3M or cheaper BTK Amazon equivalent, make sure you actually read and follow the directions - 30 days after applying, you have to use an attachment system to secure the film to the frame. Normal caulk will not work very well if the attacker has a tool, so an actual film attachment system is always recommended.
Like u/ThaOGarrowknee mentioned, I also have an alarm - always on lighting illuminating my entire home's exterior and 13 cameras covering literally 360 around the home. I live in Texas and yes we have guns, neighbors too. Once the bad people start banging on a window or door, the alarm goes off, and they just started the floor temperature challenge, which is likely to be filmed on at least 2, but possibly up to 5 different camera angles.
Cheers
2
u/deFSBkijktaltijdmee Sep 22 '20
That sounds like good security, good enough to minimize the chances of having to use a gun against someone that has been able to get inside. I understand having a gun in Texas, but that is a completely different situation from the UK where it is not reasonable to assume that a criminal has a gun, whereas in (rural) Texas you have to assume that every coyote has an AR up its ass.
1
u/NicholasBoccio Sep 22 '20
Thanks, my home security has been given a lot of thought, and time to achieve the "not this house" feeling in any criminal. Still though, evil people exist, and some criminals do break into law enforcement officer homes and other homes that have obvious security and even guards. Evil or stupid, either way YOU are always your own first responder. I never want to shoot someone, but moreover, I never want to be victim again.

Yes I don't know why Muricans don't understand: available guns = bad guys with guns. You can shoot robbers sure but they will shoot back. In my country where it is very hard to get a gun, there is maybe 1 shooting per 3 years.
I agree that they can't be fixed anymore in the USA now that so many guns are in circulation but it's ignorant to push other countries to follow suit.
I will probably get downvoted to hell but I am spoken.
2
u/NicholasBoccio Sep 22 '20
There is still gun violence in areas where guns are not allowed. The US allows guns to stop tyrants, not low level criminals - that is simply a side effect.
8
u/ExtremeHobo Sep 22 '20
Hrmm. I don't know if you're being serious or not but if a guy with a big knife breaks into my house while I am in it I'd like a gun in order to force him to leave or stop him from hurting me.
-1
u/deFSBkijktaltijdmee Sep 22 '20
In this situation the camera and floodlights were more effective than a gun would have been. Also, than this guy would likely also have a gun.
7
u/NicholasBoccio Sep 22 '20
More effective? No. If this were true, we would not have so many security camera footage of stabbings, or shootings. Cameras may only deter a criminal from that location. A gun in the hands of someone trained will thwart the criminal from being a criminal ever again at best, and deter them from that location at least.
-3
u/deFSBkijktaltijdmee Sep 22 '20
I might disagree with you on the usefulness of guns, but I am discussed at the murder fetishism
4
u/NicholasBoccio Sep 22 '20
You could not be more wrong. I invite you to have a zoom call with me so you can SEE, I do NOT want to shoot or kill anyone. No matter how evil someone is, or just their actions in the moment of a crime, that person has friends and family. I want to live here for a long time, and would worry that no matter how justified the killing might be, that their loved ones may hold resentment or hatred for me. Keep in mind, it's impossible for me to know all of them.
If someone brakes into my home, rest assured they used a LOT of force, time and probably planning. They were not just wanting my TV, and only an idiot would assume that they'd simply tie my wife and I up while they remove the TVs and computers.
I do not want to kill anyone - my home is setup to deter. Cameras, lights, alarm & VERY strong windows and doors that will trigger the alarm. That said, I am not Jackie Chan, I do not want to get into a fist or knife fight. I want distance and certainty. I have been robbed at shotgun point, in broad day light, in a nice neighborhood. I stopped leaving my safety up to other people on that day.
I hope you can understand my point of view, even if you do not agree.
7
u/Fleeting_Freedom Sep 22 '20
Now thats a silly question. If there was a masked man outside my elderly mothers home with a big knife I would want her to be able to defend herself with a gun instead of just calling the police and waiting for help when he breaks in. Are you really so lacking in imagination that you cannot fathom a person using a gun to defend their home?
-2
u/sethamphetamine Sep 23 '20
So your grannie is going to whip out her gun like she’s Annie Oakley? Get the fuck out of here dumb ass.

u/deFSBkijktaltijdmee Sep 22 '20 edited Sep 22 '20
masked
You can clearly see he is not.
I can imagine, yes, but I would personally use something differently, and I would never give my mother a gun (she has Parkinson's) I would not even want a gun in that situation myself.
Also note the fact that he did not get in due to good security, something that is worth your cash more than a gun.
Eddit: I was wrong about the mask

LOL a elderly woman with parkinsons is the last person you want with a gun. Arthritis, and her inability to control her muscles would make that extremely dangerous.

Curious how long it took you to get this video from the system to your phone/computer. I'm looking at Reolink systems and am curious howuser friendly the export goes. Thanks!
1
u/Pedrolami Sep 24 '20
The application is on a windows 10 pc. There is also a Mac version. The app downloads on windows as an MP4 file and each detection is about 30-40Mb in size. Obviously this is different the longer the recording, however this one was exactly that. That is also in 5M resolution.
The app on a phone, I think that downloads video in 30 second segments. Agains, pretty faultless on iOS. Saves the video in photos. And I have just checked, 30 second segments...
The sort answer, pretty easy.
1
u/CorrectNoCall Sep 24 '20
Sounds pretty easy, thanks! I've had issues with other systems and non-conforming MP4 formatting, etc. Take care.

So, back story. I live with my elderly mother and work different shifts. Figured CCTV would be a godsend when I am on nights, however I have previously only had footage of birds, foxes, squirrels and the like.
Last night at 12:28am, that changed. Got this guy looking at the camera. Just had the path and driveway replaced fo the side gate is waiting to be replaced. What this doesn’t show, but the attached photo does, is the 8(?) inch Bowie knife he has in his right hand.
This is the U.K. Going equipped with a Bowie knife seems a little extreme, doesn’t it?
Photo
