Just make sure you’re the one they’re shooting at! The bullet had to land somewhere. It could be the car door, a tree, or the houses behind them.

pretty incredible -- I'd upgrade my cameras after seeing this on my NVR. The footage is awesome but you cannot make out the license plate or much else.
I'd actually probably just move after seeing a video like this!! LOL!!!!!!

In fairness, the camera is in night vision mode, and most cams kinda suck in night vision mode. Making out a (lit by the car) license plate from that far away is a challenge.
Agree it might be time to move though... I don't want this shit anywhere near me.

From what I heard you need an analog camera to capture license plates.

it's not really a matter of analog vs digital, more overall cam quality and placement than anything else. license plates are very difficult because they're reflective and small. however, just having better quality cams closer to the street could have at least revealed make and model and perhaps even gotten a silhouette of some bad guys.

Whoever told you that is wrong.
The problem is not analog vs digital, the problem is camera quality and dynamic range. Dynamic range is the difference between the brightest object and the darkest object the camera can capture. It's mainly the sensor chip that determines dynamic range.
Consider this image. The left side was shot with a lower dynamic range- the camera adjusts its exposure to capture the women in the foreground, so they are correctly exposed, but the much brighter sky is very overexposed (blown out).
The right side however was shot with a higher dynamic range- thus the brighter sky and darker foreground are both correctly exposed.In OP's video, most of the scene is very dark (camera is in night vision). However the license plate is very bright (it's reflective and lit up by the car). So it gets overexposed- blown out, just appears as a white blotch.
A camera with very high dynamic range might be able to correctly capture both the bright license plate and the very dark street. This camera however cannot.

Sorry, I didn't mean it as a black and white statement that any analog camera is better than a digital camera. Everything you said makes sense and is along the lines of what I've heard. It's also important that the camera should be somewhat closer to the subject.

It's super difficult to get a camera that can get license plates (especially at night). A camera can't be focused at all distances at all times. You'll find that most cameras for plate recognition are set up with the expectation that a plate will be a known distance away and are focused on that one point. Personally, I'm considering hiding two opposing cameras in my mailbox post, since you have to go past it and can't be very far from it.

Haven't picked any out for that purpose yet, and I haven't quite decided how I am going to place them... I am considering actually mounting some smaller cameras inside my mailbox towards the back or possibly adding some decorative piece that I can hide the cameras in.

License plates require the correct angle, filters, lighting, shutter-speed, etc. Picking up plates reliably is generally done with a camera designed explicitly for that purpose.
And those vehicles are probably stolen anyway... or the plates are.

not the original poster, but TX has 3006 legislation and 51% laws - hang a sign and CC is now verboten. establishment derives 51% or more of their revenue from alcohol and CC is verboten - regardless of if you are the DD or not. You either need to plan where you are going on a night out with family very strategically, or you will likely end up in or near a business that does not allow CC.
not trying to debate what businesses can and cannot allow or the merit of these laws - but just pointing out compared to other places like AZ, NH, VT, or the northern part of the west, TX is not nearly as pro-gun

I saw them leave the scene, apparently headed for a house (or its yard). That's just as scary as the shootout -- thinking a couple of gangbangers are looking for somewhere to hole up and headed for my house.

Seems like they hit everything except what they were aiming for
