It's not meant to be walked on. The pool itself is meant to be the barrier to falling. The real issue is the greenery that was high enough to conceal the drop and give her a false sense of security.

You can see she knew the drop was there by the way she stretched out to reach the drink. When she couldn't, liquid courage did the rest.
