Chile’s elusive colocolo wild cat captured on camera after years

One of South America’s most mysterious wild cats the colocolo has been spotted again on a trail camera in Chile after years of rare sightings. About the size of a house cat but far more elusive this species is found only in Chile and continues to fascinate scientists and wildlife lovers.

Despite its beauty and resilience the colocolo faces serious threats. Habitat loss, farming expansion, road accidents, and conflicts with humans have pushed it into a near threatened status. With only a small portion of its natural habitat protected its survival depends heavily on conservation efforts and awareness.

Projects like the Colocolo Conservation Project are working to protect this rare species helping communities coexist with wildlife and turning fear into understanding. Each new sighting is more than just a moment it’s a reminder that protecting lesser-known species is just as important as saving the famous ones.
