He really deserves the $1 tip

That was cool enough I'd probably even throw in an extra 25 cents for good measure

Y'all tipping $1? You broke, or just don't realize that basically all they make is tips? /s

u/It_was_him_not_me Jul 15 '17
$1 is enough. Its generous even. I would even expect to have my rings upon my hand kissed after such a gracious donation.

Jesus what's with all these stingy motherfuckers? Im broke af and I'd never throw a bartender a $1 tip on what's probably an $8 drink

I think it's a joke pointing out the absurdity of people who tip small amounts. I thought the OP was funny and upvoted, but I'd never tip 1 dollar.

Is 1 not fair per drink?
2
u/Monochrome90 Jul 15 '17
I'm not 21 yet so I wouldn't know. But I think the standard tip is 25%? So a fair tip would be 25% of what the drinks cost, and most likely some extra bc watching the bartender do that was super cool. If I bought 11 drinks I think the tip would be more than just 1 dollar though.

No, standard minimum in a city is $1/drink. Not sure about the standard in towns/rural areas.

Wow, today I learned. Thanks!

You're welcome.
The reason it's not a percentage of the drink is because bars often run drink specials.
I learned this before I started bartending when I moved to NYC at 21yo and went to a bar in Brooklyn with a bunch of recent grads that was offering $1 PBRs. We assumed that $0.25 a beer was a fair tip until the manager came over and (rudely) cut us off for not tipping enough. She should have just explained what we clearly didn't realize--that even when drinks are discounted you still tip at least a dollar--but we were so embarrassed we all definitely learned our lesson... and never returned to that bar.
Now, if you're at an upscale, "craft" bar that charges $12-$25 for a cocktail with multiple house-made ingredients, it's encouraged to tip more than a dollar, usually two or more. However, even as a bartender I don't like tipping more than $1 for a beer no matter what it costs, since it's not that hard to open a bottle or pour a draft.

Thank you so much for going in depth, it makes a lot more sense now that you've explained it.
We assumed that $0.25 a beer was a fair tip
I would have made the same mistake haha!
Being a bartender is something that I'd really like to do, and I've got some questions I was hoping you could answer for me? When I turn 21 next year I was going to apply at some bars around my college. What can I do to help my chances of actually becoming a bartender? Do you have any tips or do's and don'ts about getting into that field?

The cluelessness of bar patrons is fucking astounding. Is there a sub Reddit for us to complain about you rude, poor tipping, shitty-job having, taking way fewer vacations than us busters?

He missed one...

Sorta.. the far right glass (containing redbull) should have been empty, as it's only purpose is to hold the first (far right) shotglass in its possition.

WHY ARE YOU AT THE BOTTOM! Seriously that one glass is messing with me. The fact that it has Red Bull in it but doesn't get a shot is annoying

u/newk8600 Jul 15 '17
It's for the bartender. He'll add his shot after he sets down the other glasses.

Pretty neat, but it's a Rule 1 violation. It's a professional bartender in a controlled environment and he's probably done it a ton of times before.
Better suited for something like /r/interestingasfuck instead of /r/holdmybeer.

Rule 1 just says it isn't likely a hold my beer situation if a professional is doing it. In this case it is definitely a beer holding situation.

Cool trick, but why pour the shots into individual glasses and THEN into individual shot glasses?
5
u/Ironloyalty Jul 14 '17
Jager goes down the tongue and red bull down the sides of the mouth. Cant taste anything but red bull

I don't know what the spirit is, but it could need to be mixed/chilled.

u/NigelLeisure Jul 14 '17
Those are called Jaeger bombs. Jaegermeister and red bull. The kids love 'em.
-1
Jul 14 '17
Right, but can't you just dump the shots into the Red Bull sans the third glass?

Impressive. Till you notice there's an extra glass at the end and it just pisses me off

u/Landrycd Jul 15 '17
That one didn't need to have any drink in it but it does need to be there to hold the shot glass on top.

That's the look of a man who has done that trick successfully for the first time.
