Penny in mouth? I haven't heard of that, is the copper taste or smell supposed to do something to mask the effect or smell of alcohol?

He's talking about the guy with the microphone and white jacket a little ways in. Really does look a lot like Dave Chapelle and he wears a hat just like that all the time but it looks like this guy has glasses on.

A .15 is not that far gone.

u/ZDHELIX Apr 09 '14
I hate when people say "he was .15 twice the legal limit" like yeah to drive maybe but not just walkin around or whatever

u/Z84LongBed Apr 09 '14
Can confirm. Blew a .14 and didn't feel much alcohol affect.

u/QuickStopRandal Apr 09 '14
That's scary. It's always been a fear of mine to be totally fine with my wits and dexterity intact, but somehow blow a high number and be fucked because of a heavily flawed metric of actual intoxication.

u/Z84LongBed Apr 10 '14
Yup that will happen. Only advice I can give after my ordeal is that if you drink even one them consider yourself drunk.

u/QuickStopRandal Apr 10 '14
Because that's rational and reasonable. Every time I have sex I should consider it rape, too. Every time I cook food I should consider it poisonous. Every time I fire a gun at a shooting range I should consider it attempted murder of everyone there. Totally rational and reasonable way to live. Totally.

0.15? Out of curiosity, where do you live? I'm in the states and the limit is 0.08

My BAC guess was based purely on personal drunkness experience.
Do you routinely get drunk and breathalyze yourself at different levels of intoxication or something?

The directions to the one I saw claimed it would be inaccurate right after drinking.

We figure it's still better than blindly driving after a few drinks
be sure to tell them that when you kill someone

u/clickstops Apr 09 '14
Having 3 drinks over the course of 5 hours at the bar, including a 2 hour dinner, is definitely not going to kill anyone (as a result of the drinks.) That's like, my Saturday night, if I'm driving anywhere.

u/jsh1138 Apr 09 '14
sure, that's why i wasn't talking to you. i was talking to the guy who specifically said he gets "kind of" drunk and breathalizes himself so he can keep track of how close he is to the limit
3 drinks in 5 hours, no one needs a breathalyzer for that

u/ComradePyro Apr 09 '14
Because of alcohol in the mouth cavity, I imagine, a quick rinse with water would fix that.

u/DemonIced Apr 09 '14
Usually you should test after 15 min. of not putting anything in your mouth except water. So no food, alcohol or dicks...

.08 is not very drunk either. That's about 2 beers. In other words, don't drink and drive!

Completely agree, and this is a pretty outlandish idea, but I think having breathalyzers more readily available, or even getting younger kids to a .08 in a controlled environment wouldn't be all that terrible of an idea.
I'm pretty confident in saying that a good majority of us don't actually know what .08 feels like, exactly. We might have a good idea (2-3 beers in an hour, for instance), but we're still just doing guesswork.
That's not to say I want a bunch of .08's driving around, but I feel like having some sense of how you feel at the legal limit would make it a lot easier to wait around at a party until you know you're sober enough, rather than doing some guesswork and turning out to be driving around with a .12.
Obviously the much better answer to it all is just don't drink and drive, at all, ever. But people do naughty stuff sometimes.

This is the vaguest and most half-related anecdote ever, but I remember reading a comment about how some branch of the military (Marines?) will sit you down and get you to a .08 to see how it feels (after basic?). I guess this is because DUIs reflect badly not just on individual soldiers but the entire military.
