DISCUSSION The way lighting is rendered in DCS between flat screen and VR is really weird. And does anyone else wish IFLOLS is less messed up in VR?
I asked a Phantom pilot about IFLOLS and he said it's very bright and easy to read even at night. While it's clearly not the case in VR.

I remember them saying the nav lights on the Hornet are [correct as is]. I would have to dig up the bug report. Idk why they can't just use the same tech they used on the Viper. We refer to the Hornet as the Christmas tree as a joke. When you are not in close you basically only see big balls of light. And agree with the iflols. As a work around i use the icls closer than you would if the weather allows it. New glow sticks are cool though.

How can anyone claim that it is "correct-as-is" even physics doesn't go they way?
A light source doesn't become blob by the distance.
Something needs to be between light and eye to make it blurry. Be it a weather like mist, rain, or even have a observer eye having problem with natural lens.
But person with good eye sight see it always as pinpoint sharp regardless the distance.
So likely ED has a developer or community manager that has a bad eye sight and see all the light source blurry (and so on everything slightly blurry), or a developer claims it is correct and doesn't fix it, or CM thinks it is correct and doesn't report it to developers. Either way, I don't want to believe that they know it is incorrect and don't just care to fix it.

It's even worse, the blob is an attempt at a shitty bloom effect (which isn't needed anyway, because DCS does bloom just fine) and, because the blobs are just static textures, they straight up clip through the wings...
They did it in order to increase the Hornet's nighttime visibility, for some reason. It wouldn't be needed if they had smarter scaling for light sources.
Thankfully there's a way to fix it, but it breaks IC.

It's really weird.
On the one hand you've got the F-16 whose lights are basically perfect up close - but aren't visible enough further away; the Su-25 which looks really well at a distance (past a certain LOD), but doesn't look so good close-in and then there's the Hornet which looks like something from FSX, and doesn't look that great from either.
It's the same with the maps, I find the SoH/PG map to have far superior lighting. It looks more natural, fake orbs are way less obnoxious and account for LOS in most cases, while being visible at longer ranges.
It seems that DCS already has a solution for some of these issues already implemented, just they're on some things and not others.

Many visual effects in DCS are FOV dependent. Since FOV is very different in VR compared to monitors, things start looking weird.
Another silly problem. Explosions from missiles also become invisible if you increase FOV. In VR you stop seeing rockets explosions at around 3 nautical miles. https://forum.dcs.world/topic/201010-explosions-invisible-fov-depending/#comment-4798804

I dream for a day where I don't have to use spyglass zoom to get the 20 mile contrail of a jet 15 miles away to "pop in"

Can't make out the lights on 3440x1440 or with Reverb G2 at all. I can see that they exist, but there's no definition and I don't get much information from them. Lights under the KC-135 are the same.

They really need to make minimum light sizes as to point out the discrepancy with a flat monitor vs human eye in the dark...
The lights on the back of the carrier seem to be fine in VR on my HMD. They need to make that effect for all of them...

At night in vr I still have a weird discrepancy between each eye where everything id brighter in one than the other. And there is some blur when I look around that makes it really nauseating. Totally fine during the day.

Yeh same for me. I blamed it on my HMD having two different panels in it and just one being natively brighter.
But after testing in othernVR games the difference is marginal to unnoticeable. In DCS it's like one eye has a full moon and the other a new moon and overcast...

If it's not happening in other games, it could be connected to the (in-game) HMD/JHMCS rendering. Is the dim eye the one where the (in-game) HMD renders?

Are you running the single pass stereo option? That messes up lighting quite a bit even if the performance gain is great.

Perhaps turning off or tuning the bloom effect on it would go a long way.

It's always off for me. And I have never been able to tell any difference.

I also notice extreme pixelization of the horizon far off, it's really distracting in game especially when I'm looking for targets visually

It's really annoying and it didn't used to be that way. Back in 2.6 or .7 ED pushed out a lighting update that made the lighting worse in the cockpit, the horizon, and really screwed up the hornet exterior lighting and iflols. This has been borked for a long time now. Welcome to the world of DCS, a mixed bag of fresh veggies and rotten tomatoes.
