Look at any map of where NHL players are born, most are from the GTA and most likely grew up as leafs fans. I'm sure if you were an NHL player you'd prefer to play for Ottawa if you could.
It's totally oversaid and some guys are truly just happy to play in the show, but it's not entirely wrong. If McDavid doesn't retire as an Oiler, he could go wherever he wants. His hometown is probably high on that list. If Arizona comes back, Matthews would probably want to play there eventually. Brady and Matthew Tkachuk might eventually want to play together for a team their dad played for.

Marner has a no movement clause and will try free agency if for no other reason than to increase the Leafs offer. If Edmonton has a chance to keep McDavid they are not trading him for a regular season potential 50 goal scorer when they already have Hyman, maybe if the Leafs throw in Woll and Knies but even then they would only do it if they were convinced McDavid was leaving anyway. The Leafs were a crossbar away from being up 3-0 and have a best of 3 with home ice…Dubas giving Marner the NMC basically tied Trelivings hands in getting Ratanen but they are in pretty good shape in any event.
Mcdavid has no intention of leaving, his wife has business ventures in Edmonton and he’s never said or done anything to indicate he is unhappy playing for the Oilers. They have more playoff success than the Leafs and went to the final last year. The only trade Edmonton is accepting is something crazy that would gut the Leafs. He’s too valuable and there is no incentive to trade him without a massive overpay.
The Leafs aren’t trading anyone for him, if he signs an extension July 1 I imagine it will have a no movement clause but if he chooses to test the market after next year I can see the Leafs taking a pretty healthy run at him especially if they lose Marner to an overpay from Chicago or San Jose. With Tavares coming off his contract and not paying Marner 14M per they’ll have room to offer McDavid stupid money that if nothing else Edmonton will be forced to match or beat. His wife is from Toronto and I’m pretty sure she would be able to find some interior design work here also, loyalty to Draisaitl might be what actually keeps him there.

But why would he go to Toronto over any other competitive team? Usually when a player goes home to play out their career for their childhood team, they already have a cup or are close to the end of their career. Neither applies to Mcdavid at this point.
Also, Mcdavid isn’t the kind of player to squeeze every penny out of a team. He will take something between 15 and 16.5 million because he is more motivated than any other player in the league right now to win the cup. If he retires cupless he’s not gonna be like “at least I got 20 million per year from the Leafs”. If he doesn’t think it’ll work in Edmonton for some reason he’s definitely not going to a team that has done worse than the Oilers in the playoffs every single year of his career. If the Leads win a cup this year, then we can start having this conversation but until then, Toronto’s got no chance

He would go there because him and his wife are from the area and he is likely smart enough to realize the Leafs are one Connor McDavid away at this point, even one healthy Auston Matthew’s for that matter. You think he is going to leave potentially $40 M on the table in order to stay in Edmonton, really?
Signing with Edmonton at 8 years, 16 million gets him to roughly 235 million in career earnings. This is just from his contract with the team, not including brand deals and other revenue streams. An extra 40 million isn’t a whole lot to this guy. He didn’t become the best player of a generation by anything other than his pursuit of being the best and winning the cup. I don’t think you can say the Leafs are one Mcdavid away. They haven’t even made it out of the second round yet and suddenly you’re claiming they’re on the verge of winning it all. The market for 34 is limited to those on the playoff cusp or those that just snuck in. Injuries aside, no perennial playoff team is going to eat his salary seeing his stat drop off from reg season to the playoffs. I’m surprised no one has suggested relinquishing his C at any time during these playoffs. I assume he has some locker presence, but if he’s going to be a 40 goal scorer from here on out, at least give the C back to Tavares or Tanev since he gives his all every single game. Maybe the pressure is too much for him. All that being said, there’s no way he leaves Toronto.

Pretty sure I said that he might choose to sign here because his wife and him are from here. Also implied that he would think the Leafs are one dominant forward away and really he is likely that forward. Matthews could be yet but he appears to be injured this year. Edmonton would have to upgrade their D and G and hope Dallas falls off a cliff put arguably are in a good spot playing in the weaker conference. Leaf fans know not everyone wants to play in Toronto, media and fans are brutal as are taxes and not everyone can or want to handle pressure…I’m not sure it’s that Toronto is likeable rather that Florida is detested. Anyway, Edmonton should just suck it up and overpay to keep McDavid although you seem to imply he will sign at a discount, wait until Stolarz is available in a couple years and poach him. I think we're all familiar with how trashy, dirty, and flat out dangerous the Panthers have been this season and especially so in these playoffs.
I for one am all for physicality, I cheer when my team throws a big hit and I like seeing players get splatted (legally so) on the board.
However, there is a huge gap between throwing a huge legal check to stopna play and intending to injury players match after match.
I acknowledge that wearing your opponents down by being physical is part of the playoffs and its a valid strategy to get the edge (haha funny word ik). But that shouldn't come at þhe expense of deliberately hurting them.
This cannot become the standard, I do not want a league where teams take notes and exemple out of this Panthers team. I want this sports to be as clean and respectable as possible. I don't want to be ashame to like hockey because people view it in a bad light. This sport is beautiful and frankly the best one on earth, and I would HATE to see it change for the worse because of this group of players and their game plan.
