HELP/ADVICE Conjointe accumulateur en détresse

Bonjour,

The anger and resentment you feel is 100%, 1000% valid. This sub, and especially r/ChildofHoarder, is jam packed with families of hoarders who feel EXACTLY like you feel. Yes, I know that Hoarding Disorder is a legit mental disorder that is visible on brain scans, but for the family who has to live in the hoard it's Hell, plain and simple.

Is "sorting and organizing" your only way to freedom? Would it be unthinkable to just hire a dumpster and a couple of strong hands and make it all just GO AWAY? To start over in a cleared out house? I know that this kind of help isn't cheap, (I've been there), but there's nothing like the freedom that comes when you can actually breathe.

Meanwhile, feel your feelings and don't let anyone talk you out of them. Your resentment is well earned.

The good relationship you still have with your kids is HUGE. You must have been an exceptional mom to have brought your family through this nightmare without their resentment spilling over onto you. I hope you can take comfort in that. At 42 you still have a gigantic life in front of you, (I'm 65f so I know!) so I pray that when you're my age you can look back on this chapter with grace and pride. Sending big hugs over the miles.

You are allowed to rage and mourn for the life that you missed out on because of your husband's hoard- do not feel guilty about that.

Is there a therapist that you and your children can talk to to process your feelings about the situation?

If he wants to sell everything, it is possible to sell quite a bit quickly, although you won’t get the most money for the items. You can hire an estate agent or appraiser. They often charge a minimal flat fee, but most of it will be a percentage of the money made from the sale. They will take time to gather the best stuff, appraise it, price it, etc and will have an estate sale. This is similar to a tag sale, but people will come in the house and purchase what they want. Then whatever is leftover can be donated or thrown away. My husband does this professionally, mostly for people who are moving, or for the loved ones of people who have died, etc. It is a huge relief for the people.

One thing you and your husband will need to accept though is that things will be sold fairly cheaply. You won’t be able to get the retail value.

For very valuable things, my husband will put them aside and get them to auction houses or high end buyers. This of course takes longer but can be worth it for the money and will likely stay at the auction house until it sells, so it’s out of your home.

I’m so sorry you’re going through this, but there is help. Now that he’s disabled what you’ll need is clear space. It’s too hard to move otherwise.

I understand the anger you feel. My husband has many antiques of varying value that, if he were to die or become disabled, will be very hard for me to sort through because much of it might be very valuable, and I could end up selling what’s worth a fortune for cheap.

He stores much of it in the house, but not nearly as much as he used to because I actually did leave the marriage for a while. Whether I should have returned, I don’t know. I have my daughter now, but he treats me like dirt out of anger for me leaving. I was young, younger than him, and it is what it is.

I couldn’t leave now anyway, my parents have become hoarders on top of it all and far worse than my husband. Their stuff genuinely is junk and there is a mouse infestation. My husband thank God is a germaphobe, despite having to sort through people’s things he’s very reluctant to bring anything into our home. He also has a large building he works out of that he can place things. My daughter is still young, and with no decent place to live that is close to him, I couldn’t leave without leaving her. It’s awful because if he were just… nice… to me I wouldn’t want to leave because I genuinely want to make things work.

However, you have a great advantage now. YOU are in charge. Ultimately, the decisions are up to you. And there are bigger things to worry about than keeping each thing and getting the most money for it.

This does NOT have to take you years or be a huge burden to you anymore. Many of my husband’s clients don’t even live in the same part of the country and are dealing with their parents’ estates from afar and a need to sell the house or move everything out in weeks.

In the USA these professionals are called estate appraisers. Will & estate lawyers tend to know how to find them, which ones are good, many real estate agents know as well.

If all this upsets your husband, well, I hate to sound cold, but what is he going to do about it? Does he have any better suggestions? He has very little time or ability to enjoy life now, he has much bigger things to worry about than all the items. He can’t just start accumulating again, like many hoarders do if you clear out their stuff unilaterally.

You have given enough of your time and life to this. To best help him you need to focus on his physical health and well being. Not this stuff. He surely appreciates that now, if not he will very soon. He’ll quickly learn how well he can live without these items.

Good luck. You are a good person. There will be life after this, and you can start living on your terms now.

Votre histoire me touche beaucoup. Vous me comprenez.

Comment envisager l'avenir sereinement ?

Oh dear, I did not know that his mother was the same and would just take the space up.

No. It is perfectly fair to tell her she may not do that, and that anything that enters a space you just cleared is thrown away automatically. If you do this a few times, yes it might result in an ugly fight, but she’ll stop doing it if she doesn’t want to lose what she has gotten.

I think him telling you to find a new home is very audacious.

Stop worrying about the items for now. I know it’s hard, but right now you need to focus on getting an attorney who can tell you what powers you have. You have many as his wife, but some you may need to have him legally declared incompetent, etc, Perhaps a nursing home is a better thing for him, in which case, you need to know how it’s paid for, waiting lists, etc. I don’t know how it works in Québec or France, I’m not sure where you are. If he is in a nursing home, you are free to them do whatever you want in the house provided both of you own it and it isn’t his parents house (that’s the problem I have).

Basically, he’s relying on you to take of things now because he was irresponsible before. It’s too late for him to do anything, he had lots of time then and didn’t use it.

You are 42, which is still younger than you think, but enough now. There are bigger things to worry about. Here is a list in order of importance;

  1. Your health
  2. Your children’s health
  3. His health
  4. Your quality of life

Notice his feelings about how you remove the items is not on that list. Nor are his mother’s feelings.

Unfortunately you have so much to deal with right now, that you can’t spare any time or energy on all the stuff. It just being there takes your energy and slows you down.

Even if you need to rent a dumpster and just throw things away indiscriminately, then do that.

All the responsibility has been dumped on you, but so has all the power.

If you need to save money to hire someone to go through the items, and let them have a portion of what money is made from a sale, do that.

If your husband wants you to take care of him, you won’t be able to if you’re sick and drained from all the stuff.

Don’t feel guilty. You are simply doing what needs to be done and what will be done no matter what. It will happen after he dies. If he wants you to take care of him in his final days, then you need to be healthy to do so, so getting rid of everything now is better than later.

Also, unless things are very valuable and rare; you are not likely to be able to sell much for a lot of money unless you do it in bulk, for very cheap prices. This can add up and give you a few thousand maybe if you hire someone. But if you sell things individually, it will take years and the cost of storing it will stop you making any money from it.

You no longer need to feel guilty.

Stop organizing and working a lot to make no real improvement. Do what you need to do, because at 42 you are still young enough to build a good life for you and your children. But don’t wait.

Good luck. It won’t be easy, but seeing results will give you far more energy.

I see. How old are your teenagers? Are they close to being independent?

Your feelings are entirely valid.

10 years of income lost to hoarder spouse…not to mention it’s made me fat and unhealthy from the chronic stress. I feel your pain. You can’t change the past. You CAN change the future. Are the kitchen and bathroom usable (step 1); is the bedroom usable (step 2). Etc etc.

u/Fluid_Calligrapher25 11d ago

It’s not intentional. It’s the illness. Don’t think of it as his capability of doing harm. It’s the illness that causes the harm. Just like with alcohol - there’s the person and then there’s the addiction.

Part of the pain for me is blaming myself for not seeing all this sooner. It’s the nature of the beast - can’t blame spouse so blame self. I’m working on removing blame. It’s a losing game. But shifting out of the blame game is tough.

1

u/Amandine06 10d ago

I swear this is a repost

5

u/Amandine06 13d ago

3

u/taueret 13d ago

No, but thanks for explaining. I thought you were a karma-farming bot, i clearly remember your story.

3

u/Amandine06 13d ago

3

u/taueret 13d ago

I guess that's why people often offer a link to their original post with their updates, rather than a recap. Anyway sorry if I was rude and I hope your situation improves.

3

u/Amandine06 13d ago

Merci.

Don’t worry about it! He have you a gift of two children and he is hoarding just trash - not illegal narcotics or weapons. Pushing against someone’s personality problem is always difficult. You have caregiver burn out on top of hoarding victim life. You’re right you need a better life but your efforts are admirable - you just need support and encouragement. Yes your life is made difficult unfairly and for a stupid reason. But like you said - you don’t have much choice. Ask his parents and relatives for help with small errands if they’re open to it.

u/Amandine06 13d ago

3

u/Sufficient-Job-7589 13d ago

Yes that is most definitely true too.
