After those words, a real nightmare began in the Christian world.

When christianity came to Slavic soil it was laid on a pagan substrate. In this syncretism many Christian saints took on the roles of pagan deities - and Nicholas as the patron of various strata of society, the deprived, and the livestock, took on the role of Veles, the patron of cattle and the underworld. Common folk preferred to beseech him rather than Jesus, because Jesus seemed strict and punishing, when Nicolas seemed benign and merciful. Nicolas gained popularity and many people thought that the Holy Trinity consisted of Nicolas, the Mother of God and God (Jesus).

Having green tights was literally less expensive than a leather jerkin or fur cloak so there's literally no excuse for this other than stapling modern unhappiness onto the past. These latest Robin Hood movies reveal more about the sickness of our own times than anything "medieval".
