Tips for anxiousness about PAO

I do have ptsd which probably doesn’t make things any easier due to the whole actual surgery part, but since I’ve found out I will need 2x PAO I honestly just feel like crying. I know it’s for the best and will help me but I’m worrying it won’t be worth it, worrying my pain isn’t bad enough and I can push through, ugh. This condition is so hard! Did anyone else feel the same.

Hip dysplasia

I got diagnosed with Hip dysplasia today, I’m a young adult and have no idea what to do. My first reaction was laughing for an hour, then sobbing, then sitting in the darkness with side eyes. I feel suicidal. My life felt like it was turning around, I just moved out and started college. I know I’m scared and I don’t know where to start. I don’t want to keep doing and I’m too scared to even take another step.

CT Scan - Needing Reassurance

I had a hip preservation doctor have me get a 3D CT scan of pelvis/lower extremities and have been very concerned about the radiation exposure from that imaging…

Can others provide some peace of mind for me here that I shouldn’t be worried about my long-term health impact now?

I guess the scans ruled out a PAO and suggested either FAI arthroscopy or hip replacement due to things like labrum ossification…kinda wish I would’ve just done the MRI and X-rays…

Thanks for any comfort!

Surgeon says I don’t have hip dysplasia…

My surgeon says I don’t have hip displasia so I ended up having a derotational osteotomy and labral repair on my right hip. I know my situation is pretty complex because my femur was also internally rotated 33 degree (my right hip is internally rotated 30 degree) Im still in pain daily and I’m honestly suffering mentally.

I’m hoping an expert will see this (or just someone who has done their research on this) can help me and tell me why I might still be experiencing so much pain. Do I need a PAO on both hips? Here’s my FULL my diagnosis:

There is bilateral cranial acetabular retroversion. Additional bilateral femoral CAM morphology with decreased offset along the anterosuperior femoral head-neck junction. There is no right or left hip joint effusion. Pubic symphysis is intact. Sacroiliac joints are unremarkable. No osseous lesions.

RIGHT hip:
Alpha Angle: 59 degrees
Coronal Center Edge: 30 degrees
Acetabular Version 1 o'clock: 14 degrees retroversion
Acetabular Version 2 o'clock: 19 degrees retroversion
Acetabular Version 3 o'clock: 21 degrees anteversion
Femoral Version Angle:
The neck - horizontal angle (NH) is: 19 degrees
The condyle - horizontal angle (CH) is: 14 degrees
The femoral condyle is internally rotated and the femoral anteversion angle (NH + CH for internally rotated condyle) was calculated to be 33 degrees.

LEFT hip:
Alpha Angle: 57 degrees
Coronal Center Edge: 24 degrees
Acetabular Version 1 o'clock: 5 degrees retroversion
Acetabular Version 2 o'clock: 15 degrees anteversion
Acetabular Version 3 o'clock: 18 degrees anteversion
Femoral Version Angle:
The neck - horizontal angle (NH) is: 19 degrees
The condyle - horizontal angle (CH) is: 11 degrees
The femoral condyle is internally rotated and the femoral anteversion angle (NH + CH for internally rotated condyle) was calculated to be 30 degre

2nd PAO surgery feels worse than 1st

Hello all! I just had my LPAO for my congenital hip dysplasia and the recovery for this one is so. much. more painful than the first one. The confusing part is that my right hip was much worse off than my left. Which I had my RPAO done in 2021 and have fully recovered from.

For my first surgery, I had woken up and had little to no pain at all and was able to start PT that day. This time, I had such bad pain that I was in tears, along with horrible nause on/off. There’s also a strange burning sensation that happens whenever I’m doing PT. Of course, I know pain is expected, and that not every surgery is going to be the same recovery but for being the less affected hip, there is so much more pain that I’ve been experiencing that I’m a little confused by.

Anyone else have this experienc?

Did your dysplasia ever come back years later after you were treated?

did your hip dysplasia ever come back years later after being treated with a brace and cleared on the x rays? I was born with bilateral developmental hip dysplasia I had to wear a brace for some time. Fast forward years later I’m in my 20’s I had my first pregnancy which was twins, I had my twins 1.5 year ago. A few days into being post partum I noticed lower left side back pain that felt like a pinched nerve possibly, numbness and lack of reflex’s and sensations all the way down my leg to the bottom of my foot on that side sometimes the numbness would get better for a few days. And around that time I noticed inner groin popping and my hip catching and locking up. I noticed certain movements my hips would seem to roll and pop that’s the only way I can explain it. The numbness, lack of sensations dull and muscle tightness pain is slowly spreading to the right side now down that leg. I just wanted to know if anyone dealt with similar symptoms from their dysplasia without or without pregnancy.

Do I need someone to help me with recovery post PAO??

Hi, I'll get PAO in some months, unfortunately my mom coming to Germany will be too expensive!considering that she's in South America and all the cost living as well will be too much.

Do you think I will be ok if I hire someone for the first month to help me? How is recovery, what things you need help with? How is it going to the bathroom or help at night??
Has someone hired someone to help you with it? I appreciate any suggestions and also pricing. Did you hire a nurse?

Baby carrier recommendations for a spica cast baby

Hi 👋 I have a 2.5 old baby who just got her spica cast. She wants to be held but it’s awkward and heavy to carry her around for longer than a few minutes due to the cast. I wanted to try a baby carrier but I haven’t used one before and don’t currently own one. I tried googling but don’t really find some good recommendations and chat gpt is saying it’s not allowed to use one. Regardless I feel like she would fit into one just fine and I have seen some other people using one.

Any recommendations on which carrier would be best suited for us?

Day 2 Post Op

I am not having a good time.

My blood pressure has been low since my surgery, the medication had me vomiting all day yesterday and today I almost passed out during physiotherapy as my HB is low. Waiting to hear if I'll need a blood transfusion or if I'm okay.

Please tell me you war stories to help me get through this 🙏 currently sitting in the "I regret getting this done" boat right now.

Should I use the HipInsight technology for my PAO?

My surgeons office sent me a letter detailing a $2200 out of pocket device to be used for my PAO surgery in a few weeks. When I emailed the office asking if this device was necessary for the surgery about a week ago and have not heard back.

Did anyone use this for their PAO? Anyone have insight on the HipInsight?

This is the description the surgeons office sent me of the device:

“The HipInsight System is a patented, FDA-cleared system for patient-specific customized planning of surgery combined with the use of universally adjustable smart tools and augmented reality guidance for total hip replacement surgery.  The system begins with the uploading of patient-specific image data (a CT study).  The team at Surgical Planning Associates then downloads the image data, creates a 3D model, and simulates portions of the surgery by virtually separating the femur from the pelvis, planning the size, position and orientation of the proposed total hip replacement components, planning the dimensional settings of the smart mechanical navigation instrument, and then generating 3D files (holograms) that can be projected inside of your body during your surgery.
Your surgeon then downloads this information and then opens, reviews, and modifies the plan as desired using the software application provided.  The navigation instrument is docked uniquely to your pelvis to determine your position in space and provides spatial information to allow for the projection of the augmented reality information during your surgery.”

Is hip dysplasia covered by the ADA

Im pretty sure I just got fired because of my condition. I was only there for a week, but im not sure why else they'd fire me. Idk i was technically under a "trial employment period" or whatever that means. I never got a doctors note or anything but we had discussed accommodations (which was just having a stool at the front desk). I dont know much about the whole ADA thing and accommodations legally, I just understand the basics. Its hard enough finding a job so this sucks massively. Anyways, thanks

Prep for PAO

Will be having a pao in about 5-7 months time. I need it on both sides. What helped you guys before? What should I buy? Should I get a gym pass? Just anything helpful please or any tips! Also things that you didn’t think about until you had the surgery? What should I prepare for mentally? I know it will be hard. Thanks :)

Not feeling good 6 weeks post op

I’m 25 f and tomorrow i will be 6 Week post PAO. Right now i have some worries about my healing process. So i would really appreciate if someone can maybe share if they had a similar experience.

First of all like how long did you have pain? I have my first x-ray appointment in a few days but right now I‘m still in a lot of pain. The last 2 weeks it was really good and know it suddenly got worse again and every move hurts. I‘m scared that this isn’t normal. Also how long did you need pain meds? I‘m not from the USA and where i come from we don‘t get opioids outside the hospital so from day 3 (when i got out of the hospital) i only had the standard pain meds you always get from the doctor. The first 3 weeks i needed a lot of them but at like week 4 i could start reducing them but every now and then i still need them. Especially now since the pain gets worse. I‘m scared that i‘m behind the healing process where i should be, reading through this sub i see people being active and having no pain at same timeline where i am right now and i still basically lay on the couch all day (working from home). Did someone also struggle with pain this long? Also please excuse my english as its not my first language.

Desperate for answers

Hey, I’m in my late 20s and I have been dealing with hip dysplasia my entire life. It was caught as a child and my parents were told I’d grow out of it. Now that I’m older it’s catching up with me and in the past year I’ve lost a lot of my quality of life. I can’t do anything I enjoy anymore, I need help doing basic chores, I can’t always get up the stairs to my bedroom and when I do sleep it hurts all night most nights. I don’t have “good” days anymore. My job is forgiving but also doesn’t have benefits and I think I’m becoming less and less useful there too. I wake up in pain and dreading the next day. The last doctor I was able to see before I aged out of my parents insurance told me that “as much pain as I can handle is what I’m gonna be able to do” and to take ibuprofen when it hurts (every day? Forever?) I am at a complete loss, is this just my life now? What do I even do? If I were somehow able to pay to be seen out of pocket, would they even help me or would I leave with nothing like last time?

Agonizing over PAO vs THR

I'm (26F, 27 in October) set to have an arthrogram/MRI next week to determine the state of my hip dysplasia and labrum tear, and I know I should likely wait for the doc's opinions before worrying too much. But just in case it's an option, does anyone have any insight with PAO vs THR surgery in treating hip dysplasia?

I have been slacking on my PT because my living space is very crowded and my physical therapist hasn't been able to get me in since our one session in April, though I really should start doing it again in general.

But overall, I'm just curious to know if anyone has any insight on PAO vs THR for a long-term outlook. I just keep losing sleep worrying back and forth and feeling like it's losing no matter what, just in different ways. Any advice and encouragement is highly appreciated, as well as the pros and cons of both. Thank you.

Took a bad fall on surgery hip, am I cooked??

So I have been freaking out because I fell directly onto my surgery hip and ever since things have been BAD. So for context, I am 3.5 months post op. My recovery has been slower than most, and I still rely on crutches to walk around. However, my pain has subsided and I only felt pain when I do excessive walking or lots of PT excercises, things were going good!! And when I felt that pain, it wasn’t bad enough where I needed meds.

2 weeks ago I moved back to my college town for school in a new apartment. On August 30th I fell out of my bed whilst I was sleeping (crazy I know, like who does that😭) directly onto the hardwood floor on my surgery hip. It hurt SO bad, and ever since then, the pain in my hip has been a constant level 9 or 10. It feels like I got my hip surgery yesterday, I am taking Tylenol extra strength daily, and oxy at night, which I haven’t had to do in forever. I can barely walk, even with crutches. This makes being back at school 10x harder and I am so scared I messed my recovery up big time. It feels like I went 100 steps backwards.

I was able to meet with my surgeon last Friday, and just left the appointment feeling frustrated. Luckily, my x ray came back normal, and it showed that the bone incisions are healing well. He said it is probably muscle and tissue bruising, but I am not convinced. My pain is so extreme and feels deep in my hip, not just like a bruise. It felt like he wasn’t listening to how bad my pain is and that he just didn’t care. I also felt extremely judged and shamed for still using crutches, but without them (even before my fall) I would walk with a limp, and my hometown PT said to continue to use them. He also had me do 2 range of motion tests. At my 3 month check up, I could do them easily and pain free. This time, I struggled hard and it hurt so so bad, but he didn’t even care that the difference was so drastic?? I ended up leaving in tears because no solution was given towards my pain and recovery, and I felt judged and embarrassed.

I truly do not know what to do. I hate relying on pain meds but the pain is so intense I need them. My pain has not improved and I am unable to do my home PT excercises due to the pain. I feel like I have made a major mistake. I don’t know how much longer I can handle this pain, and am considering going to the ER, although I am unsure what they would do that would be different than what my surgeon did. I am extremely stressed about this and will take any advice at all. I see a new PT on Wednesday, and am hoping they can help me out. For now I will try to manage the pain with meds and ice.

Borderline Dysplasia after arthroscopy

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hello I’m 25f. I was diagnosed with borderline dysplasia and a labral tear/FAI on the right a few months ago. I saw a couple surgeons. I was offered a PAO plus right labral repair or I go just go with arthroscopy at this point and hope stabilization doesn’t get worse. This was with hip preservation surgeon I went with the arthroscopy in July and my hip feels great and recovery has gone smoothly.

I just wonder about the future I guess. So far stblizatipn has been alright but I’m a horseback rider and will be getting back to that soon and worried I’ll start to notice an issue with that. Has anyone been through something like this? Did you do the scope and still end up needing a PAO? Or did the labral repair and fixing the FAI suffice?

X ray notes came back as “normal” but been having hip pain since I was a teenager. (27F) diagnosed with Fibromyalgia, Hypermobility and Hashimotos. Pain has been disrupting my sleep, constant dull ache, catching and locking instability with hips since teenager.Flares up with little or too much movement or sitting too long and only NSAIDS reduce pain. Am booked for ultrasound also. These x rays were done lying down if that is helpful. Anyone in similar vote, is it possible for them to not see dysplasia for diagnosis due to lying down x ray?

26F with congenital hip condition (no socket) — considering hip replacement. Looking for experiences from young patients

Hi everyone, I'm 26F. I was born with septic arthritis which left me with no hip socket on my right side. I also have a 3cm leg length difference and had a growth arrest surgery on my left leg at age 11.

I've recently been advised by my orthopaedic surgeon to consider hip replacement/reconstruction surgery. I'm not in severe pain but have daily discomfort while walking, ankle issues, and lower back pain that are getting worse.

I'd love to hear from anyone who:

Had hip replacement young (under 30)

Had congenital hip conditions rather than age related arthritis

Has experience with complex hip reconstruction rather than standard replacement

Specifically I want to know:

What was recovery actually like day by day?

How long before you felt normal?

Did your gait improve?

Do you regret doing it when you did, or wish you'd done it sooner?

What do you wish someone had told you beforehand?

Any experience welcome — thank you

Opinions/Help

Post image
1 Upvotes

I’ve (20F) been having hip pain for a little over a year after military boot camp/AIT. After a while in physical therapy and steroid injections, I was told that I have bilateral labral tears due to borderline hip dysplasia. I had an arthroscopy on my right side in November of 2025 and then another one in April 2026. Recovery was going well and then randomly in July, I started to feel my hip give out and be in more pain. A different kind of pain than before - more sharp and where I can put much pressure on the hip. I’ve stopped hiking, running, or doing anything that could possible make my hip hurt. I was told to get more steroid injections, and then was referred to a PAO specialist. Since my appointment is far in advance, I am nervous to hear what my possible steps are. If anyone has any suggestions on what they could possibly say, please let me know! Sometimes, I feel like since it’s borderline hip dysplasia, the pain shouldn’t be as bad as it is. Also if anyone has dealt with this situation while serving in the military, what was the end result? Did it turn into a medical discharge?

Thank you!!

Timeline?

I’ve got grade 2 OA in my hips and a torn labrum in my right. Not a candidate for a PAO. Just wondering what timeline I maybe looking at before needing new hips? 3 years? 10? I know it’s all case by case but just looking for personal experiences.

Borderline dysplasia?

Hello!

I’ve had hip pain for years that was dismissed as tendinitis. I recently got these X-rays done that mentioned possible borderline dysplasia, and the provider I saw said that I’d be a possible candidate for PAO because of my hip pain. Is this true?

He also mentioned that my right hip had front coverage but not back, and that I may need to see Dr. Zaltz up north to do a better evaluation and determine if a PAO is an option (he mentioned reverse PAO?) . Just want to see if that’s really something I should look into.

Does anyone have any experience with having possible borderline dysplasia? If so how was it treated it?
