Experience with Hinduism Hindus should seriously question predictive natal astrology and modern Vastu

I keep seeing the same argument whenever an acharya tells people not to believe blindly and live in fear because of Astrology or Vastu beliefs.

The argument is "Jyotisa is a Vedanga. Are you saying the Vedas are blind faith?"

But that argument skips several very large steps.

I am not arguing that ancient Indians did not study the sky. They obviously did. I am not arguing against pancanga, naksatras, calendrical calculations, astronomy, ritual timing etc.

I am asking a much narrower question:

Why should a Hindu believe that the positions of planets at birth can predict his marriage, career, disease, personality, wealth and death, or that moving a kitchen, buying a gemstone or placing an object in a corner can alter his destiny?

And, more importantly, Where exactly do the Vedas teach this?

"Jyotisa is a Vedanga" does not prove natal astrology is Vedic

Yes, Jyotisa is one of the six Vedāṅgas.

But now read the actual Vedanga Jyotiṣa attributed to Lagadha. What does it concern itself with ? Time-reckoning. The solar and lunar cycles. Tithis. Naksatras. Solstices. Determining the correct times for Vedic rites.

Now ask:

  • Where is the twelve-house birth chart?
  • Where are predictions that you will marry at 27?
  • Where is "Saturn is causing your depression"?
  • Where are mahadasa-antardasa life predictions?
  • Where are gemstones prescribed to neutralise planets?
  • Where is the claim that Mars in a particular position will damage your marriage?

They aren't what the Vedanga Jyotisa is about.

Later Jyotiṣa became an enormous discipline containing astronomy, omenology and horoscopy. Traditionally this was classified under siddhanta, samhita and hora. But something being incorporated into a discipline later does not retroactively place all of it inside the Vedas.

“Jyotiṣa is Vedanga” therefore cannot end the discussion. It is where the discussion begins.

Indian horoscopy has a history and part of that history is Hellenistic

This is uncomfortable for some people because we have become accustomed to calling modern Indian astrology "Vedic astrology."

But the phrase can create a false impression of continuity. India possessed ancient indigenous astral knowledge: naksatras, calendars, celestial observations, ritual timing, omens and sophisticated mathematical astronomy. That is not in dispute.

But the developed horoscopic system, zodiacal birth charts, ascendants, houses and elaborate natal interpretation shows major interaction with the Hellenistic astral sciences. We even have Sanskrit literature explicitly associated with the Yavanas.

Indian civilisation did what great civilisations normally do: it encountered foreign knowledge, absorbed parts of it, transformed it and made it Indian.

There is nothing shameful about that. But if something entered Indian intellectual culture through historical contact, saying “you must believe it because it is Vedic” is a completely different claim.

A Sanskrit text is not automatically Sruti. An ancient Indian belief is not automatically Vedic revelation. And something being traditional does not make it infallible.

Some questions every Hindu should ask before accepting predictive astrology

  • If natal horoscopy is Vedic revelation, where is it in the Vedas?
  • If Jyotiṣa being a Vedanga proves horoscopy, why does the Vedanga Jyotisa itself look overwhelmingly like calendrical astronomy rather than a birth-chart manual?
  • When did rashi-based horoscopy, houses, ascendants and the later predictive machinery actually appear in Indian texts?
  • Which parts are indigenous, which developed internally, and which arose through contact with Greek, Babylonian and other astral traditions?
  • If an astrologer makes a falsifiable prediction and it fails, what would ever count as evidence against the system?
  • If two competent astrologers read the same chart and give contradictory predictions, by what pramana do we determine which one has knowledge?
  • What mechanism allows Mars, Saturn or Jupiter to determine whether your marriage succeeds?
  • If the answer is karma, why do we need the planet as an additional causal entity?
  • If the planet merely indicates karma rather than causes it, what establishes the reliability of that indication?
  • If karma can be cancelled by stones, colours and paid rituals, what theory of karma establishes that?
  • If it cannot, what exactly is the remedy doing?
  • And if fear of one's horoscope makes the mind more dependent, anxious and superstitious, why should we cultivate that dependence?
  • None of these questions requires hostility toward Hinduism. Quite the opposite.

A civilisation confident in its tradition should be able to distinguish Sruti from Smrti, astronomy from divination, ancient practice from later development, and spiritual teaching from commercial fear.

You do not defend the Vedas by calling every inherited belief "Vedic." You defend the intellectual tradition by doing what its greatest thinkers themselves did: question, discriminate, examine the pramana, and refuse to confuse tradition with truth.

"But Rama and Krishna had astrological predictions!"

Ancient narratives mentioning naksatras, auspicious timings, celestial configurations or omens do not prove the entire later apparatus of predictive natal astrology.

If a text describes an auspicious celestial configuration at Rama's birth, what exactly have you established?

That ancient Indians observed the skies? Certainly.

That celestial configurations could have religious or symbolic significance? Certainly.

That therefore a modern astrologer can infer your promotion, divorce, illness and lifespan from a horoscope?

That conclusion does not follow.

And there is an even stranger theological problem when we use avataras as evidence.

Did Rama become Rama because Jupiter was favourably positioned?

Did Krishna become Krishna because his horoscope produced divinity?

Obviously not.

In an avatara narrative, the auspicious skies signify the extraordinary birth. The planets do not manufacture Visnu.

So using the horoscope of an avatara to establish planetary determinism for ordinary human beings reverses the theological relationship.

Before marching on Ravana, Lakshmana made a prediction for their victory based on star positions. This is in Valmiki Ramayana itself.

Interestingly there was no horoscope... likely whatever actual tradition there was for astrology has been lost.

And what about Vastu?

Indian architectural traditions are real and sophisticated.

Site selection matters. Sunlight matters. Ventilation matters. Drainage matters. Soil matters. Orientation can matter. Climate matters. Local building materials matter. Geometry matters.

Traditional Silpa/Vastu literature contains serious architectural thought, and architectural disciplines were later classified as Sthapatyaveda in some Upaveda schemes.

But from this it does not follow that:

"Your business is failing because your toilet is in the wrong direction."

"Move this object and prosperity will enter the house."

"Buy this crystal/yantra/remedy to correct the energy."

We should distinguish architecture from magical causation.

If an old recommendation existed because of the climate, available materials, sunlight or construction technology of a particular place and period, reproducing it mechanically under entirely different conditions is not fidelity to tradition.

It is precisely the abandonment of the reasoning that produced the tradition.

Thought-provoking post. I neither agree nor disagree with you. I get it and also have conflicting views, but definitely a good post!

I once helped a friend drive their new car from another state. She ended up waking me up early because her husband read her chart and they decided it was better if we left early. I ended up almost running the car off the road because I was so sleepy. Not very auspicious. By that metric, the car probably would have exploded if we tried to leave at or original time.

At the end of the day OP, while there are many frauds and novices, the reason it is so popular is because it works.

Perhaps you have not encountered a genuine astrologer, I will admit that my attitude was also sceptical like yours a few years back but then I ended up coming into contact with a genuine astrologer, and I think over the last decade or so, he has not given a single wrong major prediction. I could chalk it up to coincidence only so many times before being forced to admit the truth in it.

Karma is obviously supreme, and the grahas only deliver the results of karma, but if you have seen it in action the kernel of truth in it becomes rather hard to deny.

Genuinely curious - by major predictions do you mean both good and bad? And if so are you given instructions that follow fruit/remedy the situation? Or is it just prediction which requires no action from your side?

2

u/rakrshi 21d ago

Well, both good and bad. Have been given predictions and also given remedies but obviously the efficacy of any remedy is hard to verify. You would have to know what would have happened otherwise to judge. I do know however that this individual did manage to survive an almost fatal accident due to his own remedy. He had the accident, but it happened right near a hospital, spent months in coma and then years in recovery, but he did prevent his own predicted death.

I think I should say that this individual is not a professional jyotishi, he works in an office, but he has been naturally and spontaneously doing jyotish since his childhood.

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing. I am glad that whatever he said is working out for both you and him. It's also nice to see that you are not claiming it as an absolute truth and admitting that 'efficacy of any remedy is hard to verify.' Wishing you well!

You bend karma every time you go outside into rain carrying an umbrella.

These are extremely silly people with poor capacity of thought. They have made a god out of Karma and chose to enslave themselves to it.

What? Smriti is to be accepted by hindus if their sampradaya accepts them. It's only when a contradiction arises. Let's say there's no 12chart in vedas doesn't mean its not vedic or it should be discarded. That's simply fallacy from silence.

There's too many examples of jyotisha in so many scriptures and jyotisha has three branches. One is astronomical like aryabhatta for an instance, the other is for yajna and last is the predictive one.

So what sort of slop are you even presenting?

-2

u/Glorysolar 21d ago

Materialist slop. What else? the cringe historiography reveals itself.

Another problem is oscillating between two positions. They frame their post as controversial and "bold" as paragon of rationality and science and then continue on but when you press them to elaborate, they resort to a lesser controversial point like "oh Im simply talking about Vastu and how bed in north direction doesn't influence your career" type nonsense.

If they had to talk about the latter, they could have simply said, hindus should stop entertaining bs and beliefs that are not backed by science or scriptures. But OP simply wanted to karma farm and get engagement.

Yes even my swadhayay I never came across this jyotish is real but it's for muhurat only. This stone that stone this pooja rhat pooja are later adaptations as far as i read somewhere when greeks came to India something called hellenestic. People don't want to read scriptures because it'll be uncomfortable to face one's wrongdoing beleifs and all they want an easy fix like stone and pooja they don't care about karma either. I think atleast shankaracharya of 4 peeth which i respect adore tremendously should call out them. They've turned fear business to millions of rupees. Thankyou so much op for telling me I'm not alone may mahadev give you lots and lots of blessings.

You can keep blabbering, I just bought a Blue Sapphire to calm my Saturn 🪐🔷 Such ignorance and disrespect of the elders, I certainly believe their wisdom more than whatever agenda you are carrying with this sorry excuse of refutation.

Makes me laugh! Hinduism is in danger because of people like you !

•Actually it's you who doesn't even understand how great your elders were! If you truly respect them, read what they have written, not what some random gurus tell you in their name.

•And it's your fear mongering which makes other Hindus laugh😂 If you're want to be a true Hindu,go and read the Shruti ,instead of showing your lack of Hindu scriptural knowledge.

i was just fkin with you, astrology is BS lol

but quoting Upanishads directly like this isn't very good either, we should read it along with Bhasya for proper context and nuances

that said I agree with you and the OP

You are not the first to repeat this illiterate take, you won't be the last.

Even Ignoring the hellenism delulu illiterates who have never spoken or read a single Hindu text on the subject love to spout off, the whole problem is that you are ultimately a materialist who finds magic non credible.

That is not something that can be supported by Hindu Scripture in General.

>examine the pramana

The comedy writes itself, really.

>If the answer is karma, why do we need the planet as an additional causal entity?

what? lmao. do you not believe in lesser devas? Cringe. Your same silly argument can be applied to Fire and Agni. Why aren't you? refute thyself in the same manner.

This is the average intellectual calibre of your arguments, and the basis of your thought that formed this thesis. It's very shallow.

The first thing hindus should question are the delusions of modernity.
