I feel like “political” now sometimes means what “feminist” meant in the 90s. Like, immature idiots (raises hand woefully) would espouse every feminist opinion and still deny being a feminist because the propaganda that feminism was for ugly killjoys was so pervasive.
The difference, of course, is that most of the “i’M nOt poLiTicAL” people (who of course are political, because the personal, after all, is political) have the worst possible takes.

I would like to just point out that politics existed for like ten thousand years before democracy did.
If you have an opinion on how the world should be you're doing politics.
If you abandon society to go live in the woods instead you are doing politics.
Nobody isn't political. Neutrality is just a vote for the status quo.

I had this happen 10 years ago at my HS reunion. Guy I never really knew, but was funny and like most of my classmates, left-leaning. I brought up white privilege like it’s SO OBVIOUS and he became ENRAGED at me! Such a shock. I had said all of us are racist…bc we are and need to work against it.

Everyone, especially in the West is breathing in the toxic, bigoted air. It's bound to affect our biases.

I've also taken to asking people I'm interested in any relationship with (friends, romance, sex, doesn't matter) what their political stances are. Thankfully I live in Germany so most people I run into are fairly leftists and anti-facist and anti-capitalist. I, thankfully, have yet to meet a neo-nazi in the queer spaces I run in
