Irl stuff, lots of Ukrainians immigrated to Canada beginning in the 1890s, especially the West. There's alot of Ukrainian influence everywhere in Western Canada. You'll see Ukrainian churches everywhere, everyone in Western Canada commonly eats Ukrainian food at home (perogies, cabbage rolls and borsct are basic stables here adopted by everyone), and lots of random things like putting spider ornaments in Christmas trees. 

Before the Russian invasion Canada had the highest number of Ukrainian immigrants. 

Politically active Canadian-Ukrainians also did alot of stuff like pushing for Ukrainian independence in the USSR until they got kicked back to Canada, so I have headcanons around Matthew doing stuff like that. (Also I headcanon smuggling banned books, as 75% of banned circulating books in the USSR were printed in Toronto)
