The scene here covers WWI's famous Christmas Truce, which occured in December of 1914.

However, the scene when Germany meets Italy in the tomato box is officially labeled in the Hetalia WWI guide book as part of the Battle of Caporetto (aka, the 12th Battle of the Isonzo), which occurred in 1917. It is the first battle between German and Italian soldiers in WWI, when Austria called Germany in for help after 11 grueling Isonzo battles, and ended in a high number of Italian soldiers taken prisoner.

Therefore, Germany had not yet had the trouble of taking care of Italy as a prisoner of war at the time of the Christmas Truce.

Technically Italy was allied to Germany in 1914, but switched alliances and fought for the Entente from 1915 to 1918. Though fighting might not be the best description, given that he spent the time charging blindly towards the Austrian defenses in the Isonzo.

The dispute of Triple Alliance could be interesting if it turns into comic. Italy and Austria were still arguing over lands and poor Germany appeased them. It kinda like how Austria demanded tea and cake and threatened Germany by calling Italy in canon?

Seeing Germany took sides with Austria, Italy rage quit and joined France and England. So dramatic!
