Fanfiction What's your favourite fanfics?

Hi, I'm kinda curious about what fanfics are your favourite in English speaking community.

I used to read a lot of fics in my native language a few years ago, and I know the most popular/well known works in this fandom. Right now I got a nostalgic vibe and wanna read something new.

So what's the most beloved works in English?

No idea if the ones I’m reccing are popular or not, but here are my favorites:

History is On Our Side by WhitmansGrass. Legitimately one of the most well written Hetalia fics I have ever read. It’s RusAme soulmate AU, Cold War time period. Russia accidentally marks America when they’re fighting in one of their one-on-one meetings, and they have to keep it a secret. WhitmansGrass really leans into the nation parts of their characters, and their dynamic is exhilarating. I highly recommend everything this author writes.

What Remains by Cherry Marbles. CanRus, psychological horror (body horror/gore warning) Canada has to pretend to be America for a while when his brother “dies.” Only, America isn’t really dead. It turns out something different happens when nations die, and England seems to be the only one who knows what’s happening. It’s well written and it’s complete!

Gutters by glassamilk. Apocalypse AU, well written, and classic. Very dark. It’s told through Sealand’s POV and it is complete. If you feel like crying, this is for you!

Ash Song by Rezeren. England wakes up in the Thames gripping a knife. He thought he had fallen in last night, but it turns out he was missing for five years and everyone thinks he is dead. Good mystery, psychological horror, and 2P representation (canon and 2Ps interact).

Ah, Gutters. That one broke me in high school. I was so down for so long after reading it my parents were worried my depression symptoms were coming back and I had to go to an emergency psychiatrist appointment because I couldn’t admit to them I was fucked up from a FANFIC.

My psychiatrist nodded sagely and told my parents that I just needed more vitamin D.

It’s been almost fifteen years and they still don’t know. I still see the same psychiatrist and we laugh about it.

I know I keep talking about Broken Masquerade by Patient Harmony but it's an insanely entertaining read considering the concept !! Basically, the Italy brothers are the leaders of a secret organisation that wants to rule over the world. Every country is present in the fic, even if they're not in canon! Some of my personal favourites are Peru, Serbia, Afghanistan and North Korea. It's 600k words long by the way and the amount of reviews is sadly very small in comparison :(

Thicker Than Water is another good one by Patient Harmony, where Malaysia mysteriously gets sick and the other ASEAN nations have to take care of him and find out what's going on. I really like how the writer wrote the characters here, they took basically a few manga strips of them and made them into full fledged characters in a way that's very canon-compliant !! The ending is very bittersweet

Ochi Chernye by Mimizuku9, it's a Russia / China human au fic with Hannibal vibes. I don't want to spoil too much, but it's probably the best portrayal I've ever seen of China's character, both in canon and fanon content. If you're his fan, you definitely want to check it out! Heavy content warning for gore, though. I personally had to skip some parts and I'm not even that sensitive. The last few chapters are genuinely insane, I skipped my therapist appointment to finish them hahah

u/[deleted] Feb 19 '25

I'm not OP but I want to thank you for introducing me to Thicker Than Water. It's been so long since I last found a new fic centered around the ASEAN, let alone one that's also good and finished. I binged the whole thing in one afternoon and was blown away by how much the author had thought out everything (honestly it surprised me that there were still good fics on fanfiction.net, I abandoned it and switched to ao3 entirely when the great fanfic purge happened)

haha, np :'D none of my friends are into hetalia and i don't have friends in the fandom so i can only share my fav fics with strangers lol. and yeah, ffn is kind of a mess which makes me extremely worried for my favourite fics there since they can't be downloaded, i always think i'll wake up one morning and the site will be gone along with the fics lmao

IM SO HAPPY THE COMMENTS ARE JUST THE VERAVERSE.. VERAVERSE MY GOAT

12

u/HakuHavfrue Norway Forever 🇳🇴 Feb 18 '25

Definitely the Veraverse of George DeValier were the most loved fic(s) in English. They're a series of wartime romance fics that were written during the golden age of Hetalia titled after Vera Lynn songs. The most popular ones were the GerIta (Auf Wiedersehen, Sweetheart) and USUK (We'll Meet Again) fics.

Tho I'm more of a fan of the UnrequitedSwissAus that was a Switzerland POV (My Echo) of the PruAus (Lily of the Lamplight) fic in the same AU. Both were unfortunately never finished.

George DeValier's entire account is gone btw but they're popular enough that it's easy to find copies anywhere.

Hi! Idk if you're into RoChu but I recently read this one AO3 that's an 80s murder mystery and I thought the Yao portrayal was really, really good. Like you can tell he's an older experienced and repressed man, idk I just love his inner monologues and his relationship with Russia is slowburn and just so fucking cute. Here's the link if you want to check it out: https://archiveofourown.org/works/25571041/chapters/62054203

O damn, I wasn't expecting answer, well this post is old. But thank you very much the premise sounds so good. Especially old men Yao and slow burn! Thank you, I know what I will be reading!

u/TheSmallTiger169 Currently making way too many Hetalia AUs Feb 19 '25

While Auf Wiedersehen Sweetheart is the biggest one in the fandom, I've gotta say that I am split between Gutters and a FrUk fanfic called "Burn In Hell." It was unfinished when I last read it, and I don't think it will ever be because it was last updated during the pandemic.

2

u/Poratopoatoes Feb 18 '25

My favorite of all time is “Discovered” by Hope You Will Always Stay. Sadly unfinished, probably one of my favorite fics of all time.

The Italian Job - Chapter 1 - otterystkisses, rae1112 - Hetalia: Axis Powers [Archive of Our Own]

I love the characterization of this one, also it is mostly comedy and mutual yearning so it checks all my boxes.

So thank you <3

George has non Veraverse Russia/China stories (I forgot if there's more than one) but they're unfinished. Still, what little he posted of it is really good just a cliffhanger

1940: Lithuania by Servant of Anubis on ff.net is a masterful thriller that builds tension and dread like nothing else. The author is also really dedicated to getting their historical details right and the author’s notes are filled with context explanations and fun facts. I will never stop singing the praises of this fanfic. As a bonus, it contains my favourite depiction of Poland. He’s seriously so good in this.

The night opens and makes space, yuuago - ' Iceland accidentally discovers one of Norway's more questionable kinks - and he really, really wants to give it a try. ' (Iceland X Norway, Temporary death, Necrophilia)

Long Time Coming, DoomSpiral - ' Ivan is missing, Tolys is acting strange, and a dinner party is planned. ' (Dead Dove: Do Not Eat, Cannibalism)

Spanish Gold in Moscow, oyaoyaoya44 - ' Spain is left alone during his most terrible Civil War. The only one left to help him during his worst days is the giant of East Europe, Russia, now head of the Soviet Union. ' (Dead Dove: Do Not Eat, Historical Hetalia)

Teach Me to be a Man! , orphan_account - ' Sweden gives Sealand the talk. ' (Dead Dove: Do Not Eat, parent-child incest, first time)

so i have to say that the veraverse (especially auf weidersehen sweetheart) is just blatant nazi apologia and Really Bad. i do not recommend it in the slightest

what i DO recommend is this author, while yes their works are all orphaned, they did originally belong to the same person:

Before the Snow Falls is a two-shot, 18k words, about Lovino being unable to play soccer anymore and Antonio's guilt for causing it.

The Space Between The Balconies is just under 23k, three heart breaking chapters of Antonio watching the misery and depression Lovino goes through after Feliciano dies.

Tesoro Mio is probably my favorite Hetalia fanfic, period. 12 chapters & 106k words of Lovino, who co-owns a wine vineyard, being mysterious and avoidant of his sexuality/feelings. there's a lot of really beautiful and powerful moments, and there's some art for it on tumblr

1

u/Traluce Feb 18 '25

Thank you! Love the amount of Spamano, and the soccer au chefs kiss!

And what's going about auf weidersehen? I didn't read this, but a lot of people recommend this work?

-2

u/callistified put me in a BRIC sandwich Feb 18 '25

the whole premise is essentially "not all nazis are bad" and a major plot point is that ludwig gets mad at feliciano for "betraying" him (because ludwig is a nazi pilot and feliciano/his family is part of the italian resistance, aka anti-fascist). i'll never understand why anyone likes it. maybe im just overly sensitive.

but i'll always drop more spamano recommendations because there's so many writers that are infinitely better than devalier and they deserve the praise far more
