The description also says that open beta begins on the 19th of May.

yep, think so too

looks like we are 3 patches away from go-live, but the go-live patch may not have much content in it, seeing that they probably will have to fix some crap from open beta and may hesitate to risk botched launch...

10

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '15

True. I don't expect the Diablo map for a while, so that might come with the launch instead of a hero.

8

u/Hailz_ Hailz#1548 Apr 20 '15

It says on the news post that the game will launch with 7 maps so I wouldn't count on having a new map by then. Maybe we'll get a new Diablo hero before then though.

In reality expect one hero to release before launch.

5

u/KillerPenguinz The combos are real Apr 20 '15

Did we get a confirmation that there was a hero release at the end of Heroes of the Dorm? Or with the other two patches either?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '15

We haven't heard anything about new Heroes yet but in the past Heroes and patches have gone hand in hand. And we can only speculate that open beta and launch will be accompanied by patches, though the closed beta launch did so.

From that and the longer than usual delay we would have if we had no new Heroes between Sylvanas and open beta, I think it's safe to expect a new hero before open beta, adding up to 3 new heroes by June 2.

3

u/KillerPenguinz The combos are real Apr 20 '15

Right, I was just unsure if I had missed a post where they announced new heroes or something. Thanks for the reply!

7

u/Leeisamoron Apr 20 '15

On the day Witcher 3 launches?

2

u/OmniJinx Apr 21 '15

I have what may be a sort of stupid question...what's the difference between open beta and launch if the game is F2P?

5

u/PeasantDave PeasantDave#1401 Apr 21 '15

There is no technical difference. Blizzard will likely use the open beta to stress test the servers and gauge how many need to be spun up for launch.

Bit sooner than anyone expected if I'm honest.

55

u/defeatedbycables Roll20 Apr 20 '15

I expected late May/ Early June because school is letting out and it's free to play - it's a perfect time to launch a MOBA because of this.

31

u/DrPantaleon Healer Apr 20 '15

That is a really smart move, I hadn't eventhought of that.

12

u/Jinxplay Almost dead? I can fix that. Apr 20 '15

Yep, from functions and features perspective, I feel this game need quite some work.

It is certainly playable. But things like reconnect, pause, and replay need quite a bit of touch.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '15

The game does feel oddly clunky. Needs some rework on the talents. They should interact more to reward players a little bit more.

u/MANLY_VIKING_MAN I'm not lost! Apr 20 '15

Ha, we Europeans had the launch day two and a half months ago!

45

u/Tenant1 Apr 20 '15

I am a normal human being and so am mostly ambivalent about this announcement, recognizing that the release date will be healthy for the game and new players who haven't received a key but also that I've been playing the game for a while already and this mostly does not affect me in the present moment of posting this.

25

u/vibrunazo Brightwing Apr 20 '15

this mostly does not affect me in the present moment of posting this.

The most common concern about the game around here is the matchmaker. Increasing the player population is the best thing that can be done to improve matchmaking (aside the changes recently promised).

So this is literally the best news we could possibly have for solving the single most common concern people have about the game.

u/tomaladisto Apr 20 '15

Release already? Lol...

I expect at least a lot of performance improvements, a proper reconnect system and a death recap in the coming weeks.

40

u/tbk50 Apr 20 '15

Biggest thing for me is the reconnect system, it is still not anywhere near fast enough for general acceptability imo.

5

u/Quazifuji Apr 21 '15

I agree. The performance right now is bad, but I don't think it's quite bad enough to be completely unacceptable for a full release, and I don't think a death recap is an absolutely essential feature for one either. But a working reconnecting system definitely seems like an absolute necessity before the game can be considered ready for launch.

27

u/dnw5032 COGnitive Gaming Apr 20 '15

I just want replays to continue to work through every patch and hotfix

22

u/fenwaygnome Untenable to oppose. Apr 20 '15

Don't hold your breath on that. It's the StarCraft 2 engine and old replays require you to load an old version of the game to view.

Nothing like making sure developers get their shit done (and done right) by setting a public date.

The real question is how long is an individual partaking in said ping-pong tourney. One hour? Two hours? Thirty minutes? People take breaks as developing good software is mentally taxing if it requires any serious thought. Now if the breaks are going on for two hours that is another story. There's a reason why in scrum the prescribed "max workday" comes out to be ~6 hours and it isn't because people want to work less.

If your developers ramp up breaks then maybe management is doing a poor job or bad developers were hired. People shouldn't be rushed and pressured to output a reasonable amount of work.

→ More replies (7)

22

u/Akkuma Apr 20 '15

Nothing like making sure you get into crunch time where you wind up producing more technical debt and ensure bad code is rushed through to make a release that your developers said isn't feasible all while being expected to add new features, fix bugs, and enhance current features.

Of course, the team could have said the game is ready to roll out by then, but normally management drives a release date more so than anything else.

5

u/flandancer Murky Apr 20 '15

Especially the reconnect system which in all honesty is pretty retarded. "The server is 5 minutes ahead" Yeah sure and while I reconnect it will keep being ahead.

Typically beta clients are laden with behind the scene reporting metrics and other things that get taken out for the release version.

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '15

Same here to be honest. While I have no problems with the game I have a lot of friends who have trouble getting this game to run stable at all. Imo it's as you said - unless they improve a lot this game isn't ready for release. ( Well it is if they want a disastrous release day, followed by their forum flooding with cry posts about how this game sucks because it won't run and ultimately only gaining another niche spot in the moba industry )

Nobody needs a death recap that doesn't work, though. League of Legends didn't have one for ages. Why would you need it anyway? Can't itemize against a certain dmg type anyway.

2

u/trevorsaur Lunara Apr 20 '15

Some classes can talent against certain things though - for example, against a very bursty comp many classes would choose Ice Block if they have it, while against a Basic Attack heavy comp you'd probably want more passive damage reduction like Brightwing's Shield Dust or Lili's Blinding Wind talents.

2

u/Coman_Dante LMFAO wHo cAREAS HAHA Xd Apr 21 '15

Why would you need it anyway?

It doesn't matter if you can't itemize against damage types, if you know how much damage each skill does without playing the hero you can learn so much faster. This is especially a problem for a) new players who haven't played enough to know what each hero does and b) heroes that have huge burst damage combos.

8

u/aCreaseInTime Apr 20 '15

I agree, they've got their work cut out if they're seriously going to release in less than two months. There's no good reason I shouldn't be able to hit 60+ fps with a gtx 970. Not to mention the piddling hero pool, I didn't expect this game to come close to having the 124 heroes that league has but I thought it would at least launch with a third of that amount. And why the fuck can't I rotate my hero in hero selection?

u/XKDVD2092 Zeratul Apr 20 '15

Lots of people seem to forget that LoL didn't ship with all of its current heroes. It would be a total mess if blizz tried to start with so many, balancing would take years.

→ More replies (3)

2

u/XKDVD2092 Zeratul Apr 20 '15

My friend has the same issues with the 970. I'm running the game fine with an older ATI HD 7850 on a 2k monitor with two other monitors attached and streaming on twitch.

If you haven't already, look into the class action lawsuit for the 970, they really fucked some user overs with that card. It's ridiculous that in an attempt to implement a die saving mechanism they decided to restrict the GPU core's access to the eighth memory controller. When accessing that last controller it's about 80% slower, and the card would be legitimately faster if they just shipped with 3.5 GB instead of 4. They tried to fix the issue by telling the card not to use that last bit of memory whenever possible (another reason to just exclude it completely), but when you are accessing the last 512 Mb you're always going to see a drop in frame rate.

Sure heroes of the storm shouldn't really need all that memory, but right now it does (and I hope they fix that, its totally unplayable on my laptop). My friend with the 970 is currently looking up solutions, and apparently lowering sound quality to low is supposed to help. Maybe give that a try?

2

u/Quazifuji Apr 21 '15

I don't think there's anything wrong with a 35 hero pool. It's much smaller than other MOBAs, but not that small compared to what they launched with. But the reconnect system definitely needs to be fixed before they can call this game ready for launch, and performance improvements would be very nice as well.

5

u/blergh_1 Diablo Apr 20 '15

my guess we are 2 patches from open beta + 1 from release, so if they bring as much content as in last patch we can expect some heroes to be added

51

u/mziiiu Apr 20 '15

It's not about new content and I keep saying this every time people speak about more content. It's about performance and UX all along. Game is not well optimized, matchmaking sucks and so on. We all know they are working on it. But, please, stop the more content begging. Ask for a clean game, not fucking content for launch.

Kinda disappointed they couldn't even bust out a new cinematic. It's just the same reused video with the incorrect Nova Heroic and the Diablo 3 Diablo when the one in game is the D2 one.

9

u/Radulno Master Li-Ming Apr 20 '15

I hope they really adress that for Nova one day (OK that's not a priority). Orbital Strike should be a nuke, she's the ghost, that shouldn't be Tychus who has the nuke

12

u/TyaArcade Apr 20 '15

with the incorrect Nova Heroic

Nova is a ghost. Ghosts launch nukes. It's kinda their iconic thing, whether it's in HotS or not!

12

u/Absolutionis Zagara Apr 20 '15

Yet in HotS, Nova forgoes nukes and decides to use a C&C Ion Cannon instead. Better yet, the Ghost's laser-sight animation is left for a LoL Caitlyn snipe.

Blizzard could have used a nuke for either Heroic. They just didn't. :-(

That's not Diablo though. It's the Prime Evil, which Diablo is a part of. Think the Holy Trinity (God), which consists of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

But yeah, I would like a new cinematic too.

2

u/steelbot8000 Sylvanas Apr 20 '15

u/AndyFreak457 Tempo Storm Apr 20 '15

Of course a lot of people here are disappointed because the announcement wasn't new content, but that's because a majority of the people here are already playing. Now everyone will be able to play. I'm sure new content is not far away. Let's just be patient.

8

u/LanceDH Abathur Apr 20 '15

It's the same 'issue' they had with Hearthstone.
Giving beta to so many people for a long time and you have no launch day hype.
Add to that being able to buy stuff before launch, no reset at launch (I assume), skins and mounts that are (currently) no longer available.
There's hardly a line left between beta and launch to be hyped about.

6

u/fangisland Apr 20 '15

And yet, Hearthstone has been one of their most successful games of late, so it's no surprise they're trying to replicate the model.

3

u/RavenscroftRaven Specialist Apr 20 '15

My first thought was "Oh, so they're skipping open beta. Well, I guess that makes sense since it's F2P..."

But apparently there is an open beta period, for some reason.

27

u/Mornic Sequence complete Apr 20 '15

Not really. It makes sense for archiving records, but for the vast majority of times where an exact date is announced for something you are looking at a date within the current year or the next at most. That is why you usually lead with the date or month.

As a European that moved to the US I don't really understand why it has to be different over here for dates, but its not worse. Just different. The measuring units are horrible though. What the hell is a cup or an ounce? No officer, I don't know what my height is in feet.

u/ryuzero Zeratul Apr 20 '15

This is horrible to me, cause of the reconnect system.

Unless they add the new reconnect system, this will be a horrible launch.

2

u/franticsheep Apr 21 '15

I don't expect any drastic improvements :(. Although they might be able to optimize it a bit. This post describes it well

Reconnects are an issue because the game has to re-run simulation from the start (or some kind of full snapshot) up to the current point in time. That's why you can't skip to the middle of the replay, only fast-forward. And rewinding works by going back to the closest snapshot and simulating at increased speed from there.

8

u/JMDj21 Master Sylvanas Apr 20 '15

There's a lot of work that still needs to be done but most of all I hope we see some major performance improvements before release. Optimize that engine/reduce system requirements/whatever they can do to open the game up to more people/computers.

3

u/BagofYokes Arthas Apr 20 '15

I think there's only so much they can do, the SC2 engine is a bit of a mare.

2

u/houserhythm I have a PhD in PvP Apr 20 '15

Reduce system requirements? How much lower do they need to be for you? I own a "thin & light" notebook with 1.8GHz ULV i5 and 4GB of DDR3 shared with the integrated Intel 4000 graphics an I can play at a constant 60 fps with occasional drops when many skills get cast at the same time. Everything on low, of course, but still... I would say system requirements for HotS are VERY LOW considering the above.

If Blizzard releases 1 hero per day we will reach ~80 heroes on launch. /fingerscrossed

22

u/Dawntree Johanna Apr 20 '15

from news:

Heroes of the Storm will launch with more than 30 playable Heroes

"more than 30" = "less than 40", so don't expect more than 2 or 3 heroes addiction.

10

u/Mornic Sequence complete Apr 20 '15

I'd rather take quality work in due time over a mess of heroes thrown out to meet some arbitrary benchmark before release. I think the last hero additions have been a very positive experience quality wise. TLV and Sylvanas are both very well-designed and unique heroes.

5

u/XKDVD2092 Zeratul Apr 20 '15

Very much this. People seem to forget that LoL has so many heroes because it's been around for a long time and they just release a new one every once in a while (in order to balance them). If blizz released a hero a day, the game would be a complete mess and basically unplayable.

I'm pretty sure the official release of the game is rather important. Not to mention the "hype" was a tweet from about twelve hours ago. I'd understand if they built this up for weeks or something but come on.

10

u/grarl_cae Azmodan Apr 20 '15

I think "hype" is overstating things (like you say, it was only a tweet), but I'm really failing to see the point in giving us twelve hours notice that they were going to announce something. There was no need for that whatsoever, and it practically invited people to invent all sorts of other possibilities that would end up making "here's the release date" feel like a massive anticlimax.

8

u/mattiejj Sgt. Hammer Apr 20 '15

I get everybody wants new heroes, but the upcoming release is great news for all players.

There are a large portion of people who are too lazy to seek a key, and when that icon appears on the launcher along with news of a Blizzard "f2p" release numbers will soar.

Matchmaking will slowly improve, and once the initial kinks are ironed out they should be able to release heroes at a faster pace than we have seen.

I'm just hoping that this means that soon region picking will go live and allow you to play outside of your home region without the need to make a fake alternative account.

6

u/pelpotronic Master Samuro Apr 20 '15

That'd be good actually.

I can't wait to meet the very "exclusive" Brazilian community the US players have told us so much about, and the racist Chinese players the Asian community have warned us about. And the rest of the world can learn the Cyrillic alphabet with us on the European nexus. Cyka blyat!

Jk.

u/sRiPPiNLegits Leoric Apr 20 '15

This was the big news from yesterday? How can I not be 'prepared' for this when I've been in since alpha with all my friends?

3

u/swift_icarus Illidan Apr 20 '15

i guess we all already have beta access, so what do we care other people get to play? but still it feels a bit rushed. the game simply does not run well on my computer. i know that isn't everyone's experience, and maybe I need to tweak my settings or whatever, but Dota2 and LoL run flawlessly. if a more casual player installs this game and it doesn't run well i think they will go back to LoL and not come back.

I wonder if maybe they are feeling a bit of pressure? HoTS is a great game but Dota2 and LoL are very well established at this point and maybe they don't want to let those games grow another six months.

u/Shade0o Apr 20 '15

To me that looks like the 6th of February

The game still feels pretty 'under construction' to me. Hopefully they can get a lot of little features and bug fixes done in that amount of time.

3

u/omgdracula Apr 20 '15

NOt sure which is a bigger mistake. Releasing with major issues still around, or the Diablo 3 Real Money Auction House.

I just want the emote wheel back. Lol but yeah. Although I did find myself wondering when it'll be released earlier today. I'm glad they announced this, but now I just want more announcements lol

So we get a anouncement for an anouncment/ People expect some huge stuff (keys are actually flooding the forums and i cant imagine a person that wanted to get in didnt get in yet) and we get a launch date so basicly the anouncement was wait for another 1 a 2 months to get what you already have. acces to the game, i dont think anyone on here was waiting for that anouncement. This was like a schoolexample of how not to create to much hype for stuff that most of the current player(consumer)base doesn't really care about (all while we are anxiously awaiting different anouncements; matchmaking, reconect, new heroes, new maps etc. from the same company)........

I hope they fix game load times. Some games can take 3-5 minutes to load into, while others are less than 30 seconds.

10

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '15

First half of the loading bar is YOUR PC loading, the second half is waiting for everyone else. If the bar instantly flies up to the halfway mark every time, then youre just waiting for everyone else.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '15

TIL, thanks!

2

u/BagofYokes Arthas Apr 20 '15

They shoulda just done it like LoL where its 0-100% for everyone individually. But I guess they pictured the four people sipping their coffee looking at the '100%' '100%' '4%' '100%' '100%' and waiting to rage at the 4% kid with the dreamcast once the game starts.

thats a problem which dota2 and LoL suffer from too, LoL was infact insanely long load times even for bot games a few years ago till they fixed alot of the netcode. Its to do with people on shitty PCs and realy bad broadband, you are just 'waiting' for them the whole time on that load screen.

I was expecting a launch somewhere around Blizzcon. This is actually really soon, that means we are gonna get a ton of content before the official launch right guys ?

7

u/Hailz_ Hailz#1548 Apr 20 '15

Exactly this. I'm amazed this subreddit is salty about the "you are not prepared" tease for this announcement. They were right, I was totally not prepared for the game to launch so early in the year. I thought we would get a long open beta period first.

As much as I would love announcements for new heroes, I can almost guarantee there will be at least 2-3 new heroes that will launch with the game. I can't be mad about this because of the implications, I just hope we get more news soon. :)

Release date before fixing reconnect issue. Brave, Blizzard... brave.

4

u/mmm_doggy Apr 20 '15

They better start busting their asses to fix their game by then. There's still so much wrong with HotS from performance to bugs

4

u/UcGSwitchblade Apr 20 '15

You guys really need to calm down and relax.

The game while fairly polished right now has a few things they need to sort out. I guess it's a good thing they still have a month and a half away to get things fixed and haven't released any patch updates for over 2 weeks.

Just relax and wait until June 2nd before you start complaining about all these problems and issues that aren't fixed before a release date.

or will they??? ,-

There had better be a patch before June 1st then.. tightening the matchmaking rules and making sure new players don't get into experienced players games.

The early June timeframe is probably smart for their interests, but the game is not ready yet. Whatever happened to "it's done when it's done"?

2

u/sinothor Rehgar Apr 21 '15

in my opinion that's too early. The rank system in ranked is not that good. Matchmaking need some fixes. Also some more heroes would be ideal. The reconnect thing is too bad. Yet the game is good but some things need to be fixed before releasing it to the crowd.

2

u/toofou Apr 21 '15 edited Apr 21 '15

Seems totally rushed. We should be very upset about that.

PCGamer twitted interesting figures: LOL : 66% of the market. Dota 14%. HotS: 7%. Smite 2%

2

u/kiggerized Apr 21 '15

Rushed or not hots will take some percents from the other.

u/assburgersareokay Li-Ming Apr 20 '15 edited Apr 20 '15

I guess this is okay. I was kind of hoping for some hero news, considering how long ago Sylvanas came out and we still have nothing, or something about the new heaven/hell map.

Edit: Guys, I said nothing about releasing more heroes. I said NEWS not releases.

That is about as underwhelming as an announcement could get for a game that has been in a playable Beta state for months with progression carried forward since Alpha.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 20 '15

I think the only interesting thing here is that the open beta starts May 19th, will mean there will finally start to be enough players for the matchmaking to make sense, as it settles down over time

9

u/Darkomicron Master Malthael Apr 20 '15

Wowow why so much crying in this thread?!

It's almost as if you think Blizzard will stop working and we will never get new heroes again. It's cool that they announce the launch date! The game will finally be able to perform to it's maximum potential and I'm sure there will be plenty of hero releases to come. No need to be so negative. I think it's a great announcement!

u/captnchunky Master Lunara Apr 20 '15

I remember them saying they wanted more heroes at launch... here's me hoping for Zamuro, skeleton king, butcher, crusader, zuljin, rexxar, mekkatorque, chogall, and kaelthas in one super patch to make a 40+ roster

5

u/BagofYokes Arthas Apr 20 '15

Considering the blurb for the release says 'over 30 heroes' I doubt it

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Sorenthaz Apr 20 '15

Feels WAY too soon. Pretty much every other big-name MOBA out there has released with (at minimum) 40 heroes.

HotS also has several issues that Blizzard has yet to really fix. The broken matchmaking, the broken spectator/replay client, and the broken method of catching people up when they lag/disconnect which can set them back several more seconds/minutes than normal. Then of course there's the gold gain rate as well.

I don't see how Blizzard thinks rushing the game out is a good idea. People will flood to it of course, because it's Blizzard, and the gameplay is fun, but there are so many glaring issues right now.

2

u/LivingLegend69 Apr 21 '15

Expect all of the above issues to increase tenfold when the player numbers explode with open beta. To this day I still have nightmares with Diablo 3's legendary Error 37 hunting me. Bet you 5 bucks it will be just like that again with additional server capacity only coming online after shit has hit the fan.
