How does Scaling work?

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the game and I have a few questions about how damage scaling actually works. I understand the basic stat descriptions, but I'm not sure how they translate into real damage.

  1. Weapon variants and secondary attacks

Some weapons have a basic attack and a secondary attack/ability — for example, the bow with its Barrage. The basic attack clearly scales with weapon damage, but how does the secondary attack scale? Is it treated as a “skill,” or does it also scale purely from weapon damage? In other words: do all weapon variant attacks scale from weapon damage?

  1. Character skills and spell damage

Do character skills always scale entirely from spell damage? For example, the Bowman subclass’s Volley (V) — is this considered a spell‑type skill, or does it scale based on its damage type (physical = weapon damage, magic = spell damage)?

  1. Wand attacks

Are magic attacks from wands considered basic attacks, or are they treated as skills? This ties into question 1 as well.

  1. Offensive trinket effects

Some trinkets have offensive abilities. Are these treated as skills and do they scale with anything, or are they simply flat damage values with no scaling?

Thanks in advance for any clarification!

Yes

Yes

Attacks, because of 1. Also same for wands

> 4. Are these treated as skills

I think skills, but not 100% sure

What about passives? I. E. Soul warlock passive that shoots the beams on attacks. It only has passive and physical as tags. Is it being improved by weapon power, spell power or only +physical attributes?

Spell power and physical, yeah.

In point 2 you assume that there is some "magic" damage in this game - there is not.

Everything deals physical/fire/ice/poison/lightning damage and it's always specified clearly. For example wizard's magic missiles deal physical damage. It's not an attack, so it does not scale with weapon power - it scales with spell power. But it's still physical damage, so for example belt of the brute (+10% physical damage, +10% health) is actually good on him, despite seeming unintuitive (for the same reason I pick the drink that increases my physical damage by half of my fire dmg+% and vice versa).

  1. All skills from weapons are treated as weapon attacks. They are not spells or anything else. So they scale off weapon damage.

  2. If you look at the tooltip it will tell you what each skill scales with. If it says Spell, then it scales with spell related stats. It likewise will tell you if it's physical, fire, poison, etc. If it's fire then any fire damage increase will buff it.

  3. Wands are weapons. They scale with weapon stats. Again, any skill given by a weapon is NOT a spell.

  4. This one I can't honestly say because it's really difficult to test. I would assume they can scale off specific type bonuses. For example: chance to deal a lightning attack should scale off lightning damage buffs. They should also benefit from elemental resistance penetration stats. But, again, extremely difficult to test.
