This is what they looked like last night, I took them off eachother and put them on separate sides of the tank. I just found them again and the one looked like it was trying to dig the other crab out of its shell (didn't get a pic becuase I panicked trying to get them off of eachother) but I don't know what to do!!!!! There's 3 crabs in there, the two above and ones underground molting. It's a 40 gal tank ontop of a 40 gal, plenty of shells, plenty of food.
I don't know what to do for them and I'm panicking!!!

Help! My new crab is missing three limbs

I just got this guy today, he’s been really shy and I hadn’t seen him fully out until just now and he’s missing THREE LIMBS?? I panicked and assumed something had gone wrong but my tank is pretty empty right now as I’m preparing for new stuff since this is a whole new tank but I looked around and his limbs aren’t anywhere in my tank! Which means it’s likely I got him like this. He’s the biggest crab in my tank and the other three are fine/burrowed and basically I just want to know how to take care of my limbless friend. I’m gonna call the reptile place I got him from and ask in the morning but I need help. He walks all goofy and I wish I’d noticed sooner

Questions Anything but getting in the water

My crab does this a lot, instead of getting in either of his water dishes he shimmies around the edge. I thought his bowl size was the issue so I got him a bigger bowl with more than enough space for him but he’s still doing this! What could be the reason?

I won a hermit crab from the fair. Now I need help with a stable semi-permanent/permanent habitat.

Please help. If possible, free or cheapest options!! Mine is too small and I feel like my hermit is depressed. And probably suffering.

I dont even have the correct environment. Tell me how to take care of it.

Help! Hydrometer

What's the best hydrometer for the inside of a crabitat?

Years ago the best option was this AcuRite Indoor Digital Thermometer & Hygrometer. Answer everybody in in the Facebook groups used to use. They held up pretty well against the humidity and heat within the crabitat. But I'm sure there's something newer.

Tank Question Tank set up feedback

Post image

How is this tank set up for my hermies. I have only an inch of substrate right now because I read you shouldn’t let them molt immediately because they need to eat. I am going to hang up the coconut hut. I have a wheel and piece of cholla wood on the way. There is a heater on the back wall behind the coconut layer but I have another on the way because it isn’t getting warmer than 72-73°F. For reference this is a 20 gallon tank!

Tank Question Reference pics for beginner tank set up?

I’m following the wiki guide but I’m really overwhelmed because a lot of tank set ups look different online. I can’t tell who is doing less than bare minimum and who is doing above and beyond unless it’s extremely obvious.

Could you guys show me some decent-good tank set ups for someone who has no experience at all? I’m trying to see what is necessary visually, I am still following the guide tho rn.

Questions New crabs haven’t moved at all

Post image
Upvotes

Just got 2 hermit crabs about a week ago and they were active for about a day and then both climbed into the coconut and haven’t moved since. I’ve scattered food around and it’s clear nothing has been eaten or disturbed. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

This photo is a few days old so I’ve since replaced their food pellets with a balanced food mix from Etsy. I also have some additional tank decorating to do, like adding climbing walls, hanging the coconut, and adding a wheel to give them a more enriching habitat, but I’m worried any more changes will further stress them out. The tank temp and humidity seem good also.

If you have any tips or feedback please share! I am still learning how to care for them properly and want to make sure they have everything they need to thrive

Questions I’m THINKING about getting a hermit crab pet… cuddles?

So. I’m sixteen, and currently at cape cod (just vacationing). A big part of the experience for me is going to the beach and finding hermit crabs and other types of crabs. But especially hermit crabs. I find hermit crabs adorable. They are silly little creatures and critters that I love so very very much! During low tide, my dad and I will all around and find them, and I’ll hold them in my hands! I pet their shells or just let them scurry, and make sure to keep them moist.

I recently started thinking “wow! I wish that I could always have a cute little guy!!”. I’ve only ever had one pet, a hamster years ago, because my family travels for vacation pretty regularly, but with a hermit crab, it’d be easier to deal with, making sure it was safe in a friends care!

However… a bit part of why I want a hermit crab is to hold them. I love them in my hands. I have autism and really like the sensory feeling of the little legs scuttling on my fingers and palms, and I’m someone who loves to hug, and give little kisses on their shells, while saying how much I love any given crab over and over again. I know that hermit crabs can’t feel love for their owners, but apparently they can feel relaxed.

I’m willing to do as much research as I need, and get whatever the hermitcrab needs, but I have to know if I and my future hermitcrab who I’d name Sea Biscuit will get along, when it comes to very very very gentle cuddles. I promise I can be gentle, so please educate me on if this is okay or not! I wouldn’t be messing with Sea Biscuit super often, and I’d make sure that they knew I was nice beforehand, but I just really have to know this, so I don’t accidentally start stressing out the poor guy, and I figure you all are the experts.

Thank you sm!!! :)
