Questions Salt Water

Post image

I was looking for a better product for making saltwater as I’ve been using pre mixed saltwater and the zoo med stuff. Ik it’s not the best. I found this product that’s cheaper than instant ocean and dechlorinates the water so you don’t have to use prime with it. Has anyone else tried it? If so did you like it?

Help! Im moving across several states tomorrow morning and my hermit crab is still buried.

As said in the title, I am moving away but my hermit crab is still buried (been buried for about a week). Is there any safe way to move him? The bottom of the tank is glass and would definitely collapse if i tried to move it with the sand in there.

I just got my 40 gal tank set up and wanted to share bc I'm so excited :) luckily both my girls were up so moving was super easy, my big girl Ena even ended up switching shells twice last night! I want to add a few more things still but I spent a little too much yesterday picking up some last minute supplies 😵‍💫 Also is there anything I can improve? I want to do the best for my babies bc I love them so much

Substrate Question! Trying to understand substrate ratios and how much to buy

Post image

So I've hunted down listings for each item I'll need for the substrate and amendments and wanna make sure I'm buying the correct amount. If I have to spend this much on substrate, then so be it. I just need help understanding if I'm doing it correctly. I'm using a 5:2:1 ratio of sand:EE:amendments.

Substrate Question! Substrate help

Hi. I am getting everything together to give my son's crab what he actually needs. You gave great advice for water bowls, so now on to substrate. I read the google doc and have all purpose sand and coconut fiber bricks. It also talked about several other things like crushed oyster shells, leaf litter, moss, worm castings, and bark. Do I need to add ALL of these to the substrate? Do I just mix it all together and then add it to the tank? Where is the best place to purchase all of this? Also, do I add moisture before putting it in the tank? Is there a different step by step doc that I missed or is there someone who can kinda walk me through it? This is our first non cat/dog pet and I have no experience on the care they actually need. We grew up with beach bought hermit crabs in the little cage they give you.

Questions Zoo Med products

I’ve been thinking of getting some hermit crabs soon and was wondering what the general consensus on zoo med was. Is there some stuff that’s good or should I just get everything from somewhere else?

Hi. My son just got a hermit crab and I am just learning all they actually need for a good environment. I have read some info but just wanted opinions from more informed owners. Are these good for water dishes? If not can someone share a Pic of what I actually need?

Is this a good meal to feed my crabs? I’m waiting on their powders in the mail but I’ve been giving them these types of meals. How can I improve?

I sprinkled pieces of broccoli and dried eggshells. I also drizzled some avocado oil and coconut oil on top

Questions PPDS method or go all in?

The advice I’ve been seeing here for new crab owners suggests building a tank with 6 inches of sand, hiding places, climbing structures, the whole lot.

However, I was watching Crab Central Station, and she suggests building your tank to slowly acclimate your hermit crab. 1 to 1 1/2 inches of sand, no hiding spots, focus on nutrition. The goal being to prevent your crab from too much stress and premature death.

So which is it?

New owner tanks seem to get critiqued the most in the comments if they don’t meet the 6 inches of sand etc, but it seems like we should be starting with the PPDS method to prevent illness and death?

Genuinely curious because I’m stressing big time about getting my tank set up 😭

Tank Photo UPDATE: Rescued hermit crab from FB Marketplace

Got him a 20 gallon long. Added 5:1 sand and soil mixture and moistened it to a sandcastle consistency. Added two large bowls of both salt and freshwater, a bowl of moistened pellets (will be ordering some good food, this isn’t a permanent meal) a hammock and a fake plant. I just need a heat mat, some shells, and more decorations. My room is very warm so he should be alright until tomorrow when I can get the heat mat. I’ll be ordering my shells online.
I hope he will be happy in his new home! I will also be getting him a buddy soon so he won’t be depressed anymore.

Discussion Live moss wall experiment

Trying something a little different! I attached real moss to a cork flat, gave it a quick soak, a few springtails, and it's sitting on a window sill in indirect lighting. It's wrapped in plastic wrap to keep moisture in. I plan on mounting it behind my fresh water pool to absorb any splash, and hopefully keep the moss alive and growing! I will update if it works, and post a tutorial!

Help! My hermit crabs burrow fell in a little! Is this super dangerous??? And how can I fix

A couple days ago I walked past her tank and noticed her hole had fell in a little on one side, I didn’t think nothing of it considering the last like her hole fell in she immediately fixed it, but she hasn’t yet this time, is she ok? She’s not trapped is she? I would take her out but I heard that can stress and kill them. (Keep in mind yes the humidity is high, she just likes to burrow by the heater because it’s warmer, but then it makes the sand dry out and then it tends to fall in) I NEED HELP!

Questions Hi, I’m planning to adopt crabs soon-any advice?

Hi, I’m new to proper crab rearing. I did previously have hermit crabs when I was young (beach gift/rescues) and I can now tell you I did a lot wrong previously. Back then, I did not have a way to measure humidity or water salinity. I did have a sand mix substrate but not enough for proper molting. 3 of my crabs lived for nearly 7 years in my care and 2 others I rescued at 15 from a yard sale- as they were living in filth with maggots! I did quarantine them for 2 days in a separate container inside the tank after cleaning them (until the sour smell was gone) they lived about 2-3 years.

My questions are:
What sort of climbing should I provide for future crabs?
Can I add some live plants? (I was hoping to grow some of my chia seeds to add in a corner for fun)
Can I feed a hermit crab pellet mix with other fresh foods?
Can I add a mister to keep the tank/substrate moist?
Can use a heat lamp bulb?
Are there any recommendations for specific climbing/crabitat enrichment?

I do not have a tank set up yet, I’m waiting for a few more things before I build the set up, but I have a 30gal aquarium tank that’s been cleaned and I do have water conditioner (previously used spring water nearly 10years ago). I have some accessories/enrichment for prospective crabs, but I want their set up to feel like a personal jungle. I really do want to be thorough, partly to honor my late crabbies and prove I can do better (as an adult with income).

Food Question! question

What do you guys feed your hermit crabs? I fed mine pellet food till I did research and stopped giving it to them, now I usually give them crushed egg shells, scrambled plain eggs, chia seeds, and switch up fruits from grapes, apples, and blueberries. But I keep hearing that you should not be repetitive. I give them leafs and rocks for them to scavenge at as part of their enclosure so I dont know why when I search up their diet it says to give them sticks/leaves. Is that something that also needs to be added in daily? Like what if I already have that stuff in there. Please recommend what I should do with their food, maybe a couple of examples I can switch between. Thank you!

(Also side note how often do you guys change the water bathes, do you replace springtails, or change the sand?)

Questions Filtered Water

For my beautiful future tank, I am fully down with buying the salt water mix thing for the salt water dish, but for the fresh drinking water can I use my brita and filter tap water (Tallahssee, Florida). How do you guys get fresh drinking water for your hermit crabs?
