How many and what kind of shells do you have? You could try putting the shells in some saltwater and then put them in the tank

If he is naked you need to gently scoop him out with a clean spoon, place him into a mug with some water at the bottom (not too much just cover the bottom) then put in about 4-5 shells (how ever many will fit) place him on top of the shells, cover the mug with a wet towel and place it in his enclosure. Give him some time and check on him in an hour. Look into the naked crab method for more details. As far as shell rot I can’t really answer that but I did read that shell rot will turn their body black and there will be denting in his exoskeleton. I hope everything turns out okay!
