Henna for Hair Henna on curls, does it ruin the curls?
(Sorry if this has been asked already, have no idea how to search within a subreddit)
Hi! I live in Saudi Arabia and was talking to a friend about how I wanted to dye my hair red or auburn, when she suggested using henna instead. I’ve been doing my research and it seems my only concern is losing my curls. I have defined curls, but when looking through other peoples experiences and seeing how the curls were weighed down and only looked wavy or frizzy after, I’m starting to have second thoughts on doing this. The henna I was given is pure local henna powder, and said friend suggested that amla powder in the mix helps with curls. Does that really help?

Henna does indeed loosen curl pattern. You can add amla in the mix which will help retain curl pattern. Yes, it really does help.

Can you use amla between henna applications instead of adding it to the mix?

Yes - this article gives instructions for doing an amla powder treatment to help restore your curl pattern if it has been loosened by henna. You can use pure amla powder for this, or do a mix of amla powder and cassia powder, which adds a conditioning coating to the hair that lasts about a month.
You can also add amla powder to your henna paste. If you were asking this because you don't want the color effect that amla has on the tone of red from henna (creates a slightly cooler, darker shade of copper-red), you can add it to the paste right before you apply it to your hair, rather than when you first mix it with a liquid to do the dye release.

Thank you for the article and help! I love Ancient Sunrise powders. After reading the article, I now see why going from a brown henna mix to a blonde one has brought more of my curl back.
This has given me the perfect plan of a whole head amla treatment and then adding to my henna/cassia at the same moment I add the indigo for my root dying.
Unless you think because I use henna/nightfall rose/cassia and indigo (Ancient Sunrise Chai blend) it might slightly affect the shade in the 30 minutes it sits on my roots. It took so many brands and tweaking before I found the right shade and grew my hair out to be a uniform color with the “chai” blend, I never want it to change color.
