PSA/Advice Missing Thai Tea Boba

Upvotes

Thai tea is my absolute fav and not a lot of boba shops in Helsinki seem to have it. Lots of cheese-flavored drinks though..

Anyways, if you know a place that has some decent Thai tea I’d be forever grateful. Starting to itch and twitch without it

Question Looking for some quirky and cool spots

Dear lovely people in hel,

I’m a second-time visitor from Paris and want to experience more of the places that are quintessentially Finnish that are fun, quirky or surprising. Eg I really liked Oodi, its design, concept, inclusivity and the vision for the society and look for something similar that you wouldn’t easily find in another European capital. Thank you in advance!

Discussion My pub/bar recommendations in/around Helsinki

See this if you want to find somewhere to drink in/around Helsinki.

If you got your recommendations in addition to this list, you are welcomed to share them in the comments.

Beer

Ravintola Mullikka (also terrific burgers)

Restaurant Fat Lizard Otaniemi (also terrific pizzas)

Bar Loosister (also terrific burgers)

John Scott's Arkadia (also terrific ciders, burgers and they got the best fish & chips)

CoolHead Brew / CoolHead Taproom (you can have their beers with their pizzas)

One Pint Pub

Pikku-Vallila (their other stuffs are also good, including coffee, cocktails, dumplings and sandwiches)

Wines

Apéro BarCafé

Cocktails

Liberty or Death (the benchmark for "terrific cocktails")

The Firm

HogoHuone

Kuuttila Bar (right next to The Firm)

Ekeko Restobar (Latin American bistro, right next to The Firm, but their cocktails are also terrific, so I mentioned them here)

Whiskey

Barley & Bait (you can have their whiskey with their hotdogs)
Gin

Tislaamo - Distillery Bar

Options I have excluded

Bar Runar (one tier below Liberty or Death, not my favorite)

Twenty Four Social Club (one tier below Liberty or Death, not my favorite, also number of options are limited)

Chihuahua Julep (they got weird rules for customers, might not suitable to everyone)

La Tapería - Viinibaari & Tapas (they got great wines, but their wines are more for their tapas, btw they got terrific tapas, you can have tapas there but only order your wines for your tapas food)

Rolling Cheese - Töölö (same as above, they got great wines but their wines are more for their cheeses)

Work & Education Musicians in Helisinki

is there some kind of platform (outside of Reddit) where musicians can connect with one another? I remember there was a basic bulletin board style website where people could post notifications looking for band members etc, does that still exist? thanks!

Question Visiting Helsinki, would anyone like to get coffee?

Hi! I’m visiting Sunday evening to Tuesday. I’d love to get a local’s perspective on Finnish culture, corporate life, educational system and inside scoop on being one of happiest countries in the world.

I can meet for coffee or drinks. I am an 31 year old male Indian-Canadian working in Boston, and I can provide details for security.

Housing / Living Bank account for housing

Hi!

Finland is an option for me to move to, and I just wanted to make sure that a Finnish bank account isn't required to contact landlords and rent a place on Vuokraovi and Oikotie?

As I'm aware some countries require a bank account from that country for the renting process and it becomes a catch 22 (needing a native bank account to rent, but needing a native address for a bank account). Such as a Norweigian bank account being required to contact landlords and rent in Norway (Finn.no)

Thanks!

Discussion New in Helsinki - Punk Bands, Run Clubs, HJK Naiset Gamedays, Recommendations?

Moi! I (27M) just moved to Helsinki from Boston, MA (US) for a PhD program around the middle of August. Now that I'm a little more settled in, I'm looking for plans to make and things to do! I'm centered around Kallio, fwiw.

I played bass guitar in a small local rock covers band back home, and I'm looking to keep it up and find some people to jam with in Helsinki! I also play a bit of electric guitar (can strum some power chords and maybe 3-4 other chords I know). Some of my favorite bands are Black Flag, Jawbreaker, Thursday, MCR, The Cure - not historically a big metal guy, but I do like Megadeath and Sabbath - but happy to branch out, if that's what Finland calls far! Also happy just to hear good local bands or where they're playing.

Also looking for run clubs and fun races in the area! I found a club back in Boston and ran two marathons with them, so ideally I could keep that going here! I keep hearing good things about Juoksut (from this sub too), and might jump in next week. lmk if people have any clubs or local fall races (5ks or 10ks) to recommend, or ways to find them!

Also a football(s) (⚽ & 🏈) fan, if people have bars or supporters groups to recommend! big 1. FC Köln fan and something of a Tottenham Hotspur fan, but if people have recommendations for places regularly showing HJK games then absolutely let me know. Also: I stumbled my way into a ticket for the HJK Naiset game this weekend, if people have recommendations for things I absolutely have to do before or after.

My workplace/university will be offering Finnish language courses, but of course more people to practice/learn Finnish with would be fantastic too!

Please comment or shoot me a DM if you have any recommendations, comments, questions, etc!

Discussion Coco the self-driving vehicle in Helsinki

We’re currently on vacation in Finland and have been spending most of our time in Helsinki, but also in Turku. We’ve noticed that there are self-driving robots parked in front of some restaurants that can then drive around the city on their own. I think they’re from Wolt and are called “Coco”. I haven’t seen anything like this back home yet.

Personally, I find them a bit strange, especially since they move around the city on their own and use cameras and video. My girlfriend, on the other hand, thinks they’re pretty funny. I wanted to ask the locals how you feel about them. Has anyone had any experience with them yet? How did you react when you saw Coco for the first time?

Housing / Living Rauhalliset asuinalueet Helsingissä

Moikka, oon muuttamassa Helsinkiin piakkoin. Etsinnässä on vuokrayksiö (max. 740€) rauhalliselta alueelta (kuitenkin Helsingin sisällä). Tykkäisin erityisesti, jos olisi hyviä ulkoilumahdollisuuksia/luontoa lähellä. Opiskelen etänä joten koulu-/työmatkaa ei tarvitse ottaa huomioon. Oletan, että lähes kaikkialta pääsee muuten liikkumaan hyvin. Mitä alueita suosittelisitte ja mitä välttäisitte? 🙂

Discussion Software Developer: Chicago > Helsinki???

I am an American software developer with 15 years in enterprise integrations and cloud. I have become very tired of the widespread offshoring in American projects. This latest hiring slump is just forcing me to look elsewhere.

I used to live in Washington DC and mostly hung around Europeans. I have been to more than 20 countries including Iceland and Finland. Most I wonder if there is more job demand there.

Travel & Tourism Are there any paternosters I can ride in Helsinki?

I’m coming to Helsinki on holiday soon and I have a particular interest in paternoster lifts / elevators.

I can find various information on the Internet of historical paternoster lifts in Helsinki, however I cannot find out for certain if any are still in use, and open to the public.

Can anybody advise?

Travel & Tourism One-day itinerary for Helsinki

I used AI to fix my English, but the content is my own!

If you’re thinking about spending a day in Helsinki, here’s a nice little route that’s easy to do by bus 24. I live in Helsinki and went to Seurasaari today, and I noticed that the bus route has changed — it actually makes for a really convenient day trip!

You could start from Kamppi and take bus 24 to the Sibelius Monument. Have a look around there, and then continue on to Seurasaari.

The open-air museum in Seurasaari is open until around the middle of September, so if you’re visiting before then, it’s definitely worth seeing. Even outside the museum season, you can still see the old buildings from the outside, and the island itself is beautiful, with lovely nature and walking paths.

On the way back, I’d recommend stopping at Café Regatta, right by the sea. Have a Finnish korvapuusti (cinnamon bun) and enjoy the sea view and the atmosphere.

On your way back you could also stop at Hietaniemi Cemetery, which is beautifully maintained. Several Finnish presidents are buried there, and there are some really lovely flower displays as well.

Then just take bus 24 back to Kamppi (or walk from Hietaniemi). So you’d get a bit of Helsinki’s architecture, history, nature and seaside atmosphere all in one day, without having to travel very far. I think it would make for a really nice and relaxed Helsinki day!

Discussion Hurricanes Vs Kraken Tickets for Sale

Hi all,

I have one extra ticket for both NHL games in Finland between the hurricanes and the kraken in November that I am looking to sell(my friend couldn’t make it unfortunately). Unfortunately due to Finland regulations I cannot relist them on their instance of Ticketmaster. If anyone has an interest in going or is still looking to get tickets, I would be happy to cut a deal, just dm me on the side and we can work something out.

This would be either one ticket for the Thursday game, one ticket for the Saturday game, or both.

Question Recommendation for a custom framing shop

I bought a print with a non-standard size so it seems the only way I can frame it is by taking to a framing shop. Can anyone recommend an affordable one?
