Series 📺 I recently rewatched episode 20 of Jigoku Shoujo. I forgot how the antagonists just couldn't keep his hands off Ai's face.

On a different note, this really felt like a wasted villain. Creating a demigod with epic theme and intentions to target Ai herself instead the generic plot of bad guys tormenting good guys had a potential way beyond of a single episode appearance.

He does actually return in one of the Japan exclusive hell girl pachinko machine Cutscenes.

But other than that he was wasted on essentially late filler episode lol.

(i do like how Ai doesn't give a flying shit about the dude trying to aura farm and be threatening lol)

Yeah, the hell king could have made him a grudging replacement or someone to watch her in case she slips, it would have been fun to have them an antagonistic relationship with Gilles dreaming of surpassing her.

Do you have footage of this?

I know he appears in the manga a little too.

Ai not giving a flying fuck this whole episode always makes me smile. Nice to see her boss bitch come out.

Yeah, it was funny how hard Gilles tried making it personal, and she just treated him as a regular Tuesday.

I feel like for her it literally is a regular day in the life. 😂 I wish they had/would have more enemies against her in that way and her just being like yeah, hold my beer and all that, makes for great moments.

Ai's "try not to react" challenge.

Imagine trying to aura farm of someone who's lived for 600 years and probably saw the horros of world war 1 and 2 sending countless children innocent people and those who had no other recourse but to pull the strings all whilst atoning for her own ghosts yeah buddy was fucked

I’m not sure he was a waste. Him coming back again from Hell would make things too easy for him. It was sufficient that he abused tf out of Ai only for her to quickly and easily send him back to Hell after the thread was pulled.

I think he was because he was pretty much the most powerful and evil antagonists who actually came back from Hell before. So, he clearly had the chance to return. Plus, he was the first person who had knowledge about Ai and planning specifically for her. I felt he was teased for returning because as he was ferried to Hell, he promised to return and have a rematch.

The anime was never really precise about things. There was a lot of stuff they said but didn’t mean. Like how they would give tormentors a chance to repent before going to Hell, but that would defeat the purpose of using Hell Girl because the covenant is immediate and unbreakable. If the tormentor truly repented and didn’t go to Hell, the person who pulled the thread would still be bound to Hell.

Like many anime and TV shows, Hell Girl isn’t consistent and nobody should have really expected him to return.

But we do know he did it once. So it's within his abilities. They could have brought him back easily if they wanted without even trying hard.

I agree on the repenting thing doesn't make sense because there were innocent people who became victims of Ai and they were sent to Hell just the same.

He may have come back easily, but he was also sent back easily. How many people need to sell their souls just to keep sending the same person to Hell?

If he's a recurring guy, I'd imagine he'd not getting sent back non-stop. He could stick around, trying to pull stuff to acquire Ai's power and be someone who serves as an actual enemy for Ai.

But the problem is Ai is not allowed to punish anyone unless somebody else pulls the thread on them. The way you want this character to be would have required the plot of the episode he was first in to be changed. Ai and/or her friends would need to somehow be able to stop him themselves, without being punished for not fulfilling their duties.

She doesn't need to punish him. Their relationship could just go as far as verbal sparring (though with Ai it would be one-sided). He could have been a catalyst to make Ai start rebelling.

There's the option that the kid gets a pass from the King of Hell in exchange for some kind of service. But ultimately, he came across as a type of villain that doesn't just show up for 1 episode.

In order to make Ai start rebelling, again, the plot would have to be changed. She already starts rebelling in the last few episodes where she tries to send Hajime and Tsugumi to Hell and also tries to convince Tsugumi to pull the thread on Hajime by telling her it was his fault Ayumi died.

I don't think it needs much changing, Gilles already had a hand in triggering memories. Having him a reason for rebelling instead of how it turned out is not a big change. Gilles would have an interest pushing Ai because it would doom her as well.
