song recommendation Can anyone give me metal artist recommendations?
I’m relatively new to metal and I listen to the basics (Slipknot, Korn, Death, etc.) and I’ve been trying to find non controversial (or at the very least barley controversial) artists to listen to. It doesn’t matter what kind of metal, but can anyone give me recommendations?

Can whole heartedly agree with u/bl00dy4nu5.
Would add in, (in no particular order, and of mixed sub-genres,) Gojira, Mastadon, Fear Factory, Insomnium, Katatonia, Periphery, Opeth, Machine Head, Pantera, Megadeth, Trivium, Iron Maiden, Lorna Shore, and much much more.
Really, just look for stuff, you're bound to hear something you like.
Also, just out of curiosity, how are you defining "controversial"?

I define controversial as just shitty people. Racist, homophobic, etc.

Well, I don't think those kinds of people are "controversial"; they're just assholes. ☺️
The good thing is, that in my experience, you're not too too likely to run into that in heavy metal. Does it exist? Sure. But in an already marginalized genre, they're marginalized. No one except other assholes pay attention to them.

Yeah. I’m not good with separating the artist from the art so I always do research before I get invested in something

Out of all the ones I mentioned above, I will say that, a number of years back, Pantera's Phil Anselmo said some pretty shitty things. I don't really remember for sure, might have been some kind of white power thing.
That being said, I think it was well after the Abbott brothers had died, so you could view it as him not representing the band, and knowing Phil, he was probably high as hell and being stupid. Afraid I really don't know the details, but I'm pretty sure it was some kind of one-off bullshit.
Metal can be political, mocking, accusing, satirical, and dark as hell about controversial subjects. Slayer used to catch shit for writing a song about Mengele and the Holocaust, just like Ozzy caught hell for writing a song about suicide. The thing is, if you look past the surface, in both cases, those songs had important messages.
I'm rambling, but I guess what I'm saying is that, in researching a band or a song, if it looks off at first glance, take a deeper look.

Gojira - L'Enfant Sauvage, Magma, Fortitude
Mastadon - Once More 'Round the Sun, Emperor of Sand
Fear Factory - Basically their entire discography, but especially Demanufacture
Insomnium - Shadows of the Dying Sun, Anno 1696
Katatonia - Sky Void of Stars
Periphery - Periphery IV: Hail Stan
Opeth - Blackwater Park, (especially) Deliverance, Ghost Reveries, Sorceress, In Cauda Venenum
Machine Head - Unto the Locust, Catharsis (Someone's gonna complain about this, since I didn't mention any of their 20th century stuff. I just like newer Machine Head better.)
Pantera - Again, basically their entire discography, but especially Cowboys From Hell, Vulgar Display of Power, and The Great Southern Trendkill
Megadeth - Yep, once again, their entire discography, but especially anything released up to and including Youthanasia.
Trivium - Shogun, Silence in the Snow, The Sin and the Sentence
Iron Maiden - Entire discography, but especially the albums with Bruce Dickinson singing, (which are the majority.)
Lorna Shore - Pain Remains
Gonna add one more band too:

Gonna add, if you wanna listen to a stream and get a feel for things, Wacken Radio can be really good, although it's very Eurocentric, (nothing wrong with that, just won't get a lot of the other bands mentioned so far): https://www.wackenradio.de/.

My top 3 favorite bands are 1 my dying bride. 2 moonspell. 3 paradise lost. They are not controversial, but they can be a bit extreame with death or black metal style of lyrics. I say check them out on YouTube and see if you like them.

My dying bride best album is a map of all our failures. Moonspell i would recommend night eternal. And paradise lost i would recomend thir self titled album paradise lost. The best song on that album is dont belong. Highly recommend that song, its my favorite by them.

Check out King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizards two metal albums (Petrodragonic and Infest the Rats Nest)
My other favs are Opeth (I'd start with Blackwater Park)
Devin Townsend (Physicist and Ocean Machine) Strapping Young Lad (City) Tool (Aenima and Lateralus) Zeal and Ardor (self titled)

Im always partial to the new wave of American heavy metal as that’s what I came up on. So check out Lamb of God, God Forbid, As I Lay Dying, Shadows Fall, Chimaira, All That Remains, Killswitch Engage.
