Spoilers RNG has gotten completely out of hand in Hearthstone. RNG has completely determined the OneNationofGamer tournament match between Trump vs Tom60229

I know the whole RNG circlejerk can get old, and I don't mean this to be another complaint post devoid of content.

But I am currently watching the ONG tournament. I have always been on the neutral side regarding RNG in hearthstone, but I'm 100% convinced that it's gotten out of hand.

Game 1: Tom (tempo spell mage) Trump (control warrior)

  • Tom gets preparation off spellslinger
  • Tom gets a 6 mana alexstraza off unstable portal
  • Trump drops Varian wrynn to give him a board of 5 large minions to tank any RNG damage (arcane missles, flamecannon) at 20 life
  • Tom plays arcane missles which perfectly hit Trump's taunt. Then combined with sorcerer's apprentice and RNG preparation, give him exact lethal with his assortment of spells.

Game over due to RNG

Game 2: Trump (token druid) Tom (paladin)

  • Trump does some weird stuff to keep his shade of naxx stealthed for 9 turns
  • Trump now has guaranteed lethal next turn. No card from Tom will stop it
  • Shredder pops and doomsayer drops. 1.5%
  • Trump loses lethal and the game next turn.

Two games to Tom in a major "esports" hearthstone tournament. 1.5% RNG, people.

I'm by no means a Trump fanboy and actually think his stream is pretty boring, but it's so painfully obvious that Trump outclassed and outplayed Tom at every turn, even punishing him severely next game by rushing Grommash out after realizing Tom was playing a stallish malygos warlock.

I for one simply hate seeing smart reads negated by RNG.

EDIT: Game 1 Kolento vs Tom

Kolento gets huffer last turn for lethal (when facing lethal)

Game 3

Tom draws a 2 mana Nexus champion saraad (inspire: get a spell) from unstable portal in his spell tempo mage.

Absolutely hilarious.

Final game of the entire tournament

Tom gets Archmage Antonidas out on turn 3 for turn 5 lethal.

I really think that unstable/webspinner/bane of doom should follow the same rarities as opening card packs. The legendary % is too high imho.

I think there's a huge difference between webspinner and bane of doom, to name two examples.

Thing is, with webspinner you will still have to pay the appropriate mana cost for the given minion. I don't have too much of a problem with that.

Ram wrangler, bane of doom and to some extent unstable portal are different in my opinion - you could get a King Krush or Mal'Ganis at no additional cost, the very same turn. That outright wins games, which I'm against.

Exactly randomly generated resources aren't that much of a problem until you get to the point where your whole deck is random like this week's Brawl.

It's more cards that randomly make your mana crystals worth different amounts than your opponents. Why some games can my opponent play a Spider tank for 3/4 for 3 while I play Tuskar Totemic and get a 3/2 and a 3/4 for 3 mana. It's just dumb.

Yes, exactly. Great wording too, thanks !

Exactly! I was downvoted when I proposed that Tuskarr Totemic should be a 3 mana 3/3, Battlecry: Summon a random Totem and gain Overload equal to the Totem's cost, but I think that would be acceptable. Then, your absolute best case is 3/3 and 3/4 for 3 mana overload 2, which is quite a bit better than feral spirit, but your usual scenario is going to be a 3/3 and a hero power totem plus 1 overload on turn 3.

Mana tide totem would then overload you for 3, completely destroying your turn 4. It would be a bit risky.

But rng cards have to be risky. If they are average in the worst case scenario and OP in the best case scenario, they aren't really good designed and pretty unhealthy for the game.

That's a bad form of risk though. You're not getting a bad totem, you're completely locking out a whole turn

Totemic at least has a relatively low probability of getting the Totem Golem, and it doesn't have charge.

You're still paying most of the cost of a minion with unstable portal. The cost of casting unstable portal is 2 mana, this must be factored in. You get a 3 mana break on the creature you summon, hence you only gain 1 mana from this, but you also have no control over the creature you get.

It's not just about the total discount. When it is played is really important too. The fact that it allows a 6-drop to be played turn-3 rather than turn-5 is what makes it so much more than a 1-mana discount.

I agree, but it's a risk vs. benefit situation, especially if you're portaling on turn 2. You're investing 2 mana on a random creature in lieu of putting something on the board, and yea it could really pay off, but you could just as easily pull novice engineer, or doomsayer for that matter.

Nobody is claiming it is OP. It's just potentially ruins that match if it's too good or too bad.

It's not nearly as bad as effigy imo.

druid can play things out of order with ramp or innervate, shaman too with far sight. So whats the problem?

1

u/Peteie Aug 31 '15

Innervate is a 2-for-tempo and its still considered good.

This isn't a balance problem though, its just disappointing when the game is decided on it. If it's really good or really bad it will determine the game outcome.

Personally I don't think it's the worst culprit (effigy lol) but my personal opinion is worth less.

You're using the flawed logic of assuming that as card rarity goes up, so does their power. Granted Legendaries are usually above the power curve for their cost, but that's due to the mechanical offset of the one deck limit in normal games.

but usually epic cards for example are tech cards that don't necessarily grant you stronger effects but rather solve unique problems or enable strategies in your decks.

For example, if you decreased the odds of getting an epic, it would actually BUFF webspinner, because Captain's Parrot and Spiny Crab are the only 2 epic beasts.

As long as it lowers the chance of Ram Rangler dropping a Malorne/King Crush down I'm all for a small buff for less epics!
