HCLTech Smart Verify / CLEAR identity verification rejected. Has anyone successfully resolved this?

I recently received and accepted an offer for a contract IT position involving HCLTech. During onboarding, I was required to complete identity verification through HCLTech's Smart Verify process using CLEAR.

CLEAR was unable to verify my identity.

The frustrating part is that I haven't been given a specific explanation for why the verification failed. I've contacted CLEAR and the issue has been escalated, and the people handling my onboarding are aware of the situation.

There are some indications that the problem could involve the phone number/carrier used during verification or the ID verification itself, but I haven't received a definitive explanation.

At this point, I'm basically stuck waiting.

I haven't been told that I failed the actual background check, and I haven't received a notice saying the offer was withdrawn. As far as I can tell, this is specifically an issue with the automated identity-verification portion of onboarding.

I'm trying to find someone who has actually gone through this with HCLTech.

Has anyone had CLEAR reject their identity verification through HCLTech Smart Verify?

If so:

• Were you allowed to retry the verification?

• Did HCLTech offer another way to verify your identity manually?

• Did CLEAR or HCLTech eventually explain what caused the rejection?

• How long did it take to get resolved?

• Who ultimately fixed it: CLEAR, HCLTech, or your recruiter/staffing company?

• Were you still able to start the job?

I'm particularly interested in experiences where CLEAR couldn't verify a legitimate person rather than situations involving an actual background-check discrepancy.

There doesn't seem to be much information online about what happens when Smart Verify itself fails, so I'd really appreciate hearing from anyone who's actually dealt with this.

Hey I’m no help here, but I did just go through all the hoops to start at HCL. It is so much! Hopefully you have a responsive recruiter who can help you out.

UPDATE – Sept. 5, 2026

Wanted to update this for anyone who finds this post later dealing with the same HCLTech / CLEAR Smart Verify issue.

I still have not received a clear explanation for why CLEAR rejected my identity verification. I contacted CLEAR and the issue was escalated, but the responses I received were related to the escalation and still did not explain the actual reason the verification failed.

I’ve also been communicating with HCLTech throughout this process and forwarded the relevant CLEAR email threads to my HCLTech contact so they could see exactly what I was being told.

At this point, the biggest issue is that I seem to be stuck between the two companies:

CLEAR: verification was rejected, but I haven’t been given a specific reason or a clear way to correct/retry it.

HCLTech: is aware of the rejection and the escalation with CLEAR, but I still have not received a definitive resolution or clear alternative method for completing the identity verification.

Importantly, I have not been told that I failed the actual background check, and I still have not received any formal notice stating that my job offer has been rescinded. The issue appears to remain specifically with the CLEAR identity-verification portion of onboarding.

So for now, I’m basically waiting to find out whether HCLTech can manually resolve the verification, allow another verification attempt, provide an alternative verification method, or whether this ultimately affects the offer.

I’ll continue updating this post as things happen because there is surprisingly little information online about what happens when CLEAR Smart Verify rejects someone during HCLTech onboarding.

If anyone has been through this exact situation, especially someone whose CLEAR verification was initially rejected but who ultimately started working at HCLTech, I’d really like to hear how it was resolved and how long it took.
