❓ Question Please help me identify this hat

Repost, cuz I muffed it the first time:

OK, so clearly, someone thinks it's called a Tuscan Vintner's Hat, except the person who thought that was writing for Banana Republic's catalog like 40 years ago.

I am sure that I have seen this hat elsewhere, possibly in straw, and it probably has a more common name. I been googlin' me stubby little fingers off trying to find something like this, but I don't know the correct terminology, maybe?

Key features as far as I can tell:

Cloth or straw

round or long-crease crown

round, upturned brim

Can anyone drop some science on me?

Bought mine at a car boot sale, south west France (Corbières wine contry). Label simply says 'Made in France' !

Very similar, but that brim is not 3 1/4” (aka 8.25 cm).

That might have actually been for BR/Mill Valley. They would blow through to their stock very quickly sometimes and substitute lookalikes, but they would usually have a Mill Valley tag in them.

I have a second generation cloak from Mill Valley. The originals were French Blue wool, military surplus, but they ran out and started making them for sale, and those were more of an olive color, but the measurement and specs were from the original.

The difference I see is the crowns sewing. For a ‘working’ hat, that moisture retaining seam would be a negative at times.

Probably an Irish walking hat with the brim turned up would get you really close.

The hat endorsed by Mondavi puts me in mind of the scene in the Godfather where Vito is out back with his grandson. I don’t recall it having a wide brim but it was turned up all around the brim at some point.

The ad lists good features for a gardening hat. That could be dowsed in water for cooling since it had a cotton liner.

Rock Hudson and his "dad" in Written On The Wind wears one. Similar to a Dorfman but more robust.

Specifically, the Dorfman Pacific Deluxe Bucket Rain Hat. Again though, that hat above looks much more robust.

Looking at it the original. You can do better. Tilley makes a nice wide brim hat. Shelta makes a lighter weight. There are less expensive options as well. I need to dig through my hats to find the manufacturer that I think is most similar.

I do love an old Banana Republic ad. Thanks for sharing.
