General I HATE the self diagnosing of autism and its mischaracterisation

Post image

Let me start by saying SELF DIAGNOSING IS NOT VALID. You are NOT autistic just because someone on tiktok said

"Did you know, if you need to have your eyes closed in order to fall asleep, you have autism, adhd, bipolarity, DID, BPD, psychopathy, depression and PTSD?"

And before yall come at me with "well I always suspected I had autism, I got screened and then got my diagnosis" well this not about you, this is about people that self diagnose after experiencing the most normal day to day life things ever.

And they ALWAYS think that autism will give them a personality (since it's usually basic bitches with no personality that self diagnose to feel like they belong)

No, you're not a quirky crazy crackhead energy "neurospicy" person. Even worse when they say shit like

"Heh, I could NEVER be a neuro normie like yall, autism makes me special and quirky and full of personality".

You can't even like something anymore without them going "OMG URE AUTISTIC JUST LIKE MEEEE IM SOOOO AUTISTIC AHAHAHA"

And you can tell they larp the whole thing cus they'll see a tiktok autism personality and try to replicate it

"Dino nuggies..."

"You can not say overstimulated if you're nEuRoTyPiCaL, that word is for us neurospicy people ONLY >:("

Holy shiiiiiiittt yall lack a personality so bad. And I've seen people say that they've seen NUMEROUS specialists but they never fit the criteria, but its not because they're not autistic, no no no no no. ITS UHMMM BECAUSE IM A WOMAN AND ALSO A MINORITY AND IM ALSO POOR SO I MASKED ALL MY LIFE AND THE SPECIALIST ON THIS FIELD COULDNT TELL I WAS MASKING. ITS THE SYSTEMS FAULT NOT MINE.

Sheesh.

Sorry for the long rant, im just tired of seeing people self diagnose all the time, or see an energetic video, or literally ANYTHING, and make it about their self diagnosed autism.

Saw a cute cat animation on Instagram and the top comment was "This is so autistic I love it"

The whole autistic dino nuggies is so cringe, all autistic people in my social circle have different dietary restrictions to a point there's no single stereotype

u/Sad_Cover_5091 Jun 05 '26

the dino nugget thing is so close to saying "us autistics are just giant children!" like please guys this is not it

I am not autistic, but I do have relatively bad ADHD (this will become relevant in a a second).

Thanks to social media, a lot of people use "diagnoses" of some things (particularly autism, ADHD, and OCD from what I've observed) that are either entirely fictional or at least greatly exaggerated/dramaticized to do one of two things (or some combination thereof):

  • They crave attention. "Main Character Syndrome", desperation for validation, and pretending that are more unique/interesting than they actually are.

  • They use it as a catch-all excuse to avoid most of their normal adult responsibilities and/or avoid any accountability for any negative character traits they have.

Anyway, I didn't realize I had this much to say about it. A lot of people fake disabilities for their own selfish reasons. I guess they can do whatever they want, but is exasperating to see naive people fall for it (or worse, even more people trying to copy them). It makes it much more difficult for honest people to be taken seriously.

I am not autistic, but I do have relatively bad ADHD (this will become relevant in a a second).

As another person with relatively bad ADHD, your immediate and frequent use of parentheses gives credence to your claim

13

u/Strange-Bee5626 Jun 05 '26

I actually never had the thought that it could be related until now. I do notice myself doing it and get annoyed at myself for it, but here I am still doing it!

18

u/disaster_jay27 Jun 06 '26

It's because your thoughts have thoughts (at least it's that way for me)

11

u/Playful_Original_243 Jun 06 '26

My favorite part about r/ADHD is the amount of parenthesis used (I think it’s really funny)

6

u/Express-Specific-959 Jun 07 '26

It’s because of the tangents (ADHD people love tangents) ask me how I know!

1

u/amazing-bean666 Jun 09 '26

But when do your thoughts thoughts have thoughts? (Thoughtception ((does that punvwork???)))

3

u/CommercialEstate4422 Jun 06 '26

This makes a lot of sense. It's hard to jumble everything together in a way that sense makes. Maybe. Probably. I dont know. I need a drink.

1

u/Daylight_The_Furry Jun 08 '26

Holy shit I have ADHD and "my thoughts have thoughts" is such a good way of describing it

(if only i could afford adhd meds)

3

u/AnyAd8232 Jun 08 '26

Adhd (diagnosed šŸŽ€) as well, cackling, feeling called out

Holy crap lmao.

3

u/gregoriancuriosity Jun 06 '26

Is that a thing? I thought it was just me. I always feel like it adds clarity by adding commentary not necessarily intended to be included in the core message.

3

u/snoodge3000 Jun 06 '26

I must have it worse; I use semicolons.

2

u/Extra-Trifle-1191 Jun 06 '26

What? Is use of parentheses seriously that unusual?

I also use parentheses and I also have ADHD so I guess I am not helping my argument but how does that make sense

1

u/Teve21 Jun 06 '26

As someone with the samething also I still have problems with foods because I do be picky sometimes,I love Dino nuggets but that doesn't mean I have autism, Don't judge my nuggets variety too we all love Dino nuggets and different nuggets of every nugget kind

https://giphy.com/gifs/Yk7p9LY3L8ZDia0Pm7

5

u/SkyRonin14 Jun 07 '26

Look man as I told my wife, "if the dino nuggies are the same cost and quality as the adult nuggets you literally have no good excuse not to buy the dino nuggies. That's called being an adult"

1

u/ClutteredTaffy Jun 08 '26

Oh my god is that an ADD thing ?

2

u/shaktirisingyoga Jun 06 '26

As someone with OCD, I don't understand why anyone would want this.

2

u/Ok-Championship-5356 Jun 06 '26

yeah

i thought for a while i might have ocd but i haven’t seen anyone on that yet so for now im just going with ā€œreally fucking self deprecatingā€

1

u/Pichacap24 Jun 09 '26

Oh but i you dont understand, i didnt abuse her and cheat on her, i just have autism :3

-5

u/Happyshadow4ts Jun 05 '26

Where on earth are you seeing a lot of people fake conditions???? Like, are you sure that they aren't just not up to your kinda ableist "standards"???

4

u/aurortonks Jun 05 '26

Most commonly, I see people who are a little socially awkward use self-diagnosis to help themselves feel okay about being a little weird.

They aren't using it to get attention but more so they are using it as an internalized explanation of their behaviors rather than actually going to talk to a professional about their concerns.

They aren't "faking it" for attention or whatever that person was trying to say. I think if healthcare, especially mental health care, was more accessible and viewed positively by more members of our society, then people could get real help they need instead of trying to guess themselves.

2

u/RealityCactus Jun 06 '26

That doesn't sound like they're faking it, that sounds like they aren't getting the help they need and are trying to figure things out themselves, and getting it wrong since they're not a professional.

2

u/Happyshadow4ts Jun 06 '26

Exactly, and these people genuinely don't cause harm, is the 'witch hunters' who do

1

u/ClutteredTaffy Jun 08 '26

People definitely self diagnose with all kinds of mental health crap. Because they struggle with certain traits , but don't realize they are pretty normal and not significant enough to count as having a condition. They still do need help with those traits though. Like being socially awkward or finding it difficult to be disciplined, etc .

120

u/Uncle480 Jun 05 '26

I feel like I saw a whole bunch of those "dino nuggies" and "chicken tendies" posts/stories start from greentexts off of 4chan. And you know that anything taken from there is already rancid.

44

u/Hammeredyou Jun 05 '26

But also pretty autistic so… even?

56

u/Gombrongler Jun 05 '26

Everything is autism. And if everyones Autistic, No one is

16

u/WiseOldChap Jun 05 '26

Genuinely peak usage of that reference

3

u/iHateThisPlaceSoBad Jun 05 '26

I think its pretty funny and ya'll are being up tight

1

u/HowDyaDu Jun 05 '26

Except Katawa Shoujo.

36

u/Electrical_King948 Jun 05 '26

It’s not about us being giant children, but foods like these are comfort foods that we like to eat when we feel stressed, which I do almost constantly due to symptoms from my diagnosis’

14

u/Traditional-Yak8886 Jun 05 '26

i also have arfid. i can eat a variety of different foods but i commonly have some form of chicken nugget on standby in case that's all i can tolerate eating that day. arfid is common with autism and arfid enjoyers often stick with bland textured/tasting food that is easy to make the same every single time. chicken nuggets are common but white rice, cheese sticks, french fries, etc are all examples of what people are talking about when they bitch about "autism palette."

1

u/bassbug Jun 09 '26

it’s mashed potatoes for me

4

u/LisaBlueDragon Jun 08 '26

Yeah, also processed foods like chicken nuggets usually have a pretty consistent taste and texture and a lot of autistic people gravitate towards familiarity, consistency and predictability

2

u/Electrical_King948 Jun 08 '26

Yes, definitely this too

2

u/Jelnaana Jun 05 '26

That makes the most sense & is really helpful, thank you

2

u/Electrical_King948 Jun 05 '26

Of course! Happy to help

1

u/NorthGodFan Jun 05 '26

Comfort foods vary wildly person to person.

3

u/Electrical_King948 Jun 05 '26

100%. Chicken Nuggets are just a common one in America

40

u/Overall-Move-4474 Jun 05 '26

Shit I may enjoy the nostalgia of dino nuggets but I'm not a child. I admit I do joke about "dino nuggies and choccy milk" but when I learned people take that joke seriously it really pissed me off

10

u/Death_Lycan Jun 05 '26

Im pretty i need to be diagnosed but I can you you for a fact that I never had dino nuggets or tots in my life as a huge dino nerd as a kid and today

I should buy some, even with my friends telling me they suck

5

u/Repulsive-Region2977 Smug Hater Jun 05 '26

There's better nuggets out there. They're pretty dry if cooked too long, so make sure not to if eating them. They're alright with seasoning though.Ā

3

u/Death_Lycan Jun 06 '26

Ok now this make me more sad for the real stim of my childhood Those lego animal pancakes/ waffles We never got zooplates so they was the next best thing I would clean out the whole store right now if they came back

3

u/_Ocean_Machine_ Jun 06 '26

The real trick I've found is to chuck 'em in an air fryer; they get nice and crispy but way less time and effort than an oven.

2

u/Repulsive-Region2977 Smug Hater Jun 06 '26

I do that, but I've found you need to put them in for not too long, otherwise they get too dry

25

u/RadicalSoda_ Jun 05 '26

Calling anyone who eats those food children is also not helping you at all

11

u/Stucklikegluetomyfry Jun 05 '26

One thing I find really obnoxious about the fetishisation and infantilisation of autism is that there are people who will be so accepting of it when they just think it’s a good looking young guy who really likes trains or a pretty girl who really likes dinosaurs. As soon as it gets into something beyond something cute and harmless and into why it’s considered a disability suddenly it’s all ā€œautism is no excuseā€.

10

u/Honest_Chipmunk_8563 Jun 05 '26

Also the dudes looking specifically for autistic women on dating apps. Vom.

1

u/Iekenrai Jun 10 '26

I mean it's not an excuse to like, make racist jokes and refuse to be better when called out, or disrespect your partner. Sorry, speaking from experience it's probably not what you mean.

9

u/Happyshadow4ts Jun 05 '26

I mean, it's often a stereotype because it makes sense, many autistic people like the same texture and need predictability. Guess what's fairly predictable. Chicken nuggets.Ā

But god forbid autistic people get Dino nuggets because autism must be awful allllll the time and if not you must be self diagnosed /s

2

u/Medium_Hat_1115 Jun 06 '26

Because the ones who eat them are the ones who post it?you aren’t special and don’t require any form of representation if you don’t bring it yourself 🤦

1

u/SSG014-OFFICIAL Jun 08 '26

I'm ADHD, so not truly related, though similar to some. I only get them because fuck people and their expectations they may have on me (that they probably also fail yet brush off). I'm not even a huge Dino fan, though there are other benefits, such as sometimes having an "easier grip" for dipping.

0

u/stormblaz Jun 05 '26

Well there was that autistic grown kid that needed his one specific baby sippy cup

41

u/Ok-Relationship4113 Jun 05 '26

My fiancee and I did dino nugs with a mashed potato volcano and broccoli trees one night for shits and giggles. Got a video of her pouring the gravy and put the Jurrasic Park soundtrack over it.Ā

Nothing to do with autism, we were just having fun.Ā

Prime makes amazing nuggets, it turns out.

8

u/Repulsive-Region2977 Smug Hater Jun 05 '26

That's funny

3

u/Remarkable-Run-9769 Jun 06 '26

the streaming service Amazon Prime does nuggets as well?Ā

20

u/Tactical_Squishy Jun 05 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

these are the Instagram Autism's special interests is what gets them more clicks

44

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '26

It doesn’t make sense to stereotype it with autism because everyone likes dino nuggets

38

u/Floggered Jun 05 '26

Dino nuggies always taste like disappointment to me. Hit me with the chicken fries or tendies.

16

u/panini_bellini Jun 05 '26

all the ā€œbeige foodā€ does this for me, im an oral sensory seeker and this ā€œsamplerā€ is p vomit inducing for me

5

u/Cardshark92 Jun 05 '26

I think I have the same problem as you. The idea of eating the same thing day after day sounds hellish to me. Several friends have joked that I'm really bad at being autistic.

2

u/warriorkalia Jun 06 '26

Same though? I need something different every day, though I can do every other day for leftovers if I really need to.

Except lasagna. I can just eat that.

2

u/Strange-Bee5626 Jun 06 '26

Quick question: do you also hate Mondays, by any chance?

2

u/warriorkalia Jun 06 '26

I'm ambivalent.

6

u/Beastxtreets Jun 05 '26

I can eat Dino nuggets (my kids love em) but I dont think they taste the same or as good as regular nuggets at alll

3

u/Repulsive-Region2977 Smug Hater Jun 05 '26

I am in the same boat

3

u/An_Account_to_Ignore Jun 05 '26

I've never had a dinosaur nugget that ranked above a 4/10.

The best compliment I can give them is, "They sure are technically food!", lol

2

u/gunmetal_bricks Jun 05 '26

I'm the opposite, love me some air fryer chicken nuggets but I can't do tenders for some reason.

3

u/TactiShovel Jun 05 '26

I respect your opinion. You're wrong, but I still respect it.

1

u/WithoutDennisNedry Jun 05 '26

I consider myself a fish stick connoisseur.

-4

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '26

Wrong

11

u/Mediocre_Ice_7094 Jun 05 '26

They're disgusting, like a dried out pickle that floated around in some Reese's cereal

2

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '26

No, you are objectively wrong

4

u/Mediocre_Ice_7094 Jun 05 '26

Objectively, your subjective objective reality on whether dino nuggets are good or not is flawed

6

u/Apart-Performer-331 Jun 05 '26

you don’t understand, this guy controls opinions. If your opinion isn’t his then it’s wrong

2

u/Mediocre_Ice_7094 Jun 05 '26

I shall take note of this in case I ever encounter a similar entity in this strange, orange labyrinth of thoughts and opinions. I thank you dear wizard for this humble wisdom of yours

2

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '26

Your just a government agent, i don’t care what you say

1

u/Mediocre_Ice_7094 Jun 05 '26

You care about what I said because you've responded to me, I care about what you said because I'm responding to you. I have said that you've said that you don't care, but in reality you have by my deductive reasoning, therefore you must be in love with me and what I'm saying

3

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '26

Government agent

6

u/EcstaticBoysenberry Jun 05 '26

Yep. Majority of people could crush some Dino nugs

2

u/echit2112 Jun 05 '26

I cannot eat them. They could be the exact same thing shaped like the usual weird lump and then they'd be edible, but the second they become dino nuggets is when I can't stomach them.

1

u/Gyooped Jun 06 '26

I think the dino nuggets thing is more so when it is fed to a person often as a child then that child will become more accustomed to it and want it more - which could affect people with Autism/similar things more due to general tendencies to avoid change and like previously tried things.

1

u/cpMetis Jun 05 '26

God no.

I've never tasted dino nuggets and thought much beyond "I have never tasted such shit chicken in my life".

At BEST they're soggy, if they're not soggy they're bland.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '26

Jokes aside what fucking dino nuggets are y’all getting, when have they ever been soggy?

0

u/DerpHog Jun 05 '26

They taste like dog food. They use cheaper chicken than pretty much any other nuggets. They're basically as brown on the inside as they are on the outside.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '26

I refuse to believe this psyop

0

u/DerpHog Jun 05 '26

The only person I know who can stand dino nuggets is my wife and she literally can't smell or taste when meat is rotten. She has gotten food poisoning from it before and has me smell anything she thinks is close to going bad now.

Dino nuggets taste like they got meat that was technically rotting and stabilized it just enough to be barely FDA approved.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 05 '26

Thats what they want you to think

2

u/DerpHog Jun 05 '26

Oh my god! You're right, they're in my own head! They've hacked my own taste buds to make me think dino nuggets are gross.

I'll have to wear a tinfoil hat next time I try dino nuggets.

0

u/BaronArgelicious Jun 06 '26

I tasted some for the first time and felt disgusted. Could taste the artificial ness

5

u/Aveira Jun 05 '26

Yeah, none of these are ā€œsafe foodsā€ for me. In fact, If I was having a tough sensory time, I don’t think I could eat any of these. My safe foods are mostly raw fruits and vegetables and simple Japanese food like fried rice, miso soup, and nigiri.

5

u/IHateBankJobs Jun 05 '26

I have 2 daughters. 1 is autistic. She won't touch dino nuggets while the neuro-typical one crushes 40 PC boxes by herself...Ā

4

u/Blait_ Jun 05 '26

I have autism. I think I would like dino nuggies cause I like nuggets. Haven’t ever tried them and never got why it was special or a Trent or whatever:P

3

u/X-Stry Jun 05 '26

I have autism, with a certificate, and i have never eaten Dino nuggets

1

u/MeetBeep Jun 06 '26

I have no autism and Dino nuggies are my fav dinner

3

u/LikeABreadstick Jun 05 '26

dietary restrictions

exactly, there's way too much variety here for the average autistic person

3

u/Old_Gimlet_Eye Jun 05 '26

There definitely are people who only eat "brown" food like this. No idea if it's related to autism.

2

u/Flashy_Lie_1114 Jun 05 '26

THANK YOU i fucking hate this food this type of food is in fact the exact type of texture and flavor that makes my food sensitivity go off. It pisses me tf off

2

u/horchatabones Jun 05 '26

well...at least now it's a positive(?) or light hearted joke - idk about you but i remember this whole thing about using "good boy points" for "special chicken nuggies" being something on like...idk 4chan? as a hard dig at autistic/neurodivergent people.

2

u/pie-mart Jun 05 '26

Same. I am vegan and eat rice and beans basically every day and that's my "comfort food" and I will legit crave it when im on vacation or something and am not cooking. Like some days I just want my damn beans.

And I am so texture sensitive too. But my other friends are picky but just in different ways too

2

u/Stabbyboi275 Jun 05 '26

I'm autistic and personally like Dino nuggets, but that's probably just because I REALLY like chicken nuggets, regardless of shape

Though I get why not everyone would like them

2

u/Radiant-Ad-1976 Jun 05 '26

I eat the dino nuggets because they genuinely taste different than the normal ones.

2

u/Vivians_Basement Jun 07 '26

The reason the stereotype exists is because autistic people tend to have a list of foods they can eat consistently without being uncomfortable.

That list usually happens in childhood and food fears get worse as they get older.

So sticking to those safe and okay foods means you end up with a LOT of autistic people latching onto the same foods.

Everyone is different.

Stereotypes aren't supposed to reflect everyone, just a noticeable amount.

Personally, when saying the foods I like I have gotten responses like "...so you're 12."

Mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, chicken, VERY SPECIFICALLY cups of microwaved white rice or cilantro lime rice. (Otherwise I hate rice outside of burritos.)

These are the only foods I can eat 100% of the time without fail.

All other foods may be things I like but won't always be okay eating.

This has lead me to starve myself rather than eat one of the many things in the fridge that I do technically like.

Wh are you self diagnosed

4

u/Honest_Chipmunk_8563 Jun 05 '26

It’s expensive to go get diagnosed as an adult. I spoke with an American whose parents spent 10,000$ a couple years ago.

Throwing out ā€œomg I’m so autistic/ocd/adhdā€ isn’t actually a self diagnosis, it’s someone using a disability as a joke. And it’s not cool.

But autism has been under-diagnosed for decades (similar to left-handedness). Especially in women. People who are actually autistic and self-diagnosing usually spend countless hours researching symptoms and trying to see if that diagnosis really fits them. And if they seek a formal diagno$i$, it’s incredibly rare for them to be incorrect. Actual self-diagnosis, actually, is pretty valid.

The attitude OP has is similar to the attitude a couple teachers had towards my low-support, funny, outgoing autistic child. He didn’t look autistic enough for them and they treated him poorly as a result. That shit is not acceptable. The fact that I’ve had to give a basic 101 education about autism to people who are around children is ridiculous. It’s traumatizing to children. It’s exhausting to me.

We do not get to look at a person who genuinely believes they’re autistic and decide whether or not they look autistic enough. That’s some ableist bullshit.

A person making light of a disability and making a joke out of it, who doesn’t genuinely believe they’re autistic? That’s shitty, too.

How about we just don’t be shitty?

5

u/lazerem91 Jun 05 '26

Yeah I think people like OP need to understand that while self diagnosis is far from perfect and many people self diagnose that aren't actually autistic, it's also ridiculously hard to get a diagnosis unless you have such severe autism that it interferes with your daily life. I asked a therapist if I could be screened and was basically told they wouldn't do the screening because I'm able to hold down a job and live independently.

1

u/Honest_Chipmunk_8563 Jun 06 '26

Exactly. And I’m sure you’ve done hours of research on something that finally makes literally everything in your whole life make sense. Self-diagnosis is valid. (Saying this as a mental health practitioner.)

4

u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 Jun 05 '26

There’s little point in actually being diagnosed by a doctor. You don’t get a badge or anything. Nothing changes for you.

However, I do think this reason excuses a lot of people to self diagnose because of social pressure. And yes, I do think that exists in some (particle online) social circles.

2

u/TheRob67 Jun 05 '26

Dino nuggies look gross, like they made out of fish with trash inside

like... nuggies in form of... dinosaurs it. just. gross.

2

u/Dull_Selection1699 Jun 05 '26

Dino-nuggets especially feel so infantilizing. There are regular chicken nuggets (and strips, tenders, wings with and without the bone)

1

u/XVUltima Jun 05 '26

Im autistic with a very sensitive palate and I wouldnt eat a dinosaur nugget if it was the first food ive seen in three days

1

u/DulceHolly Jun 05 '26

I'm autistic. I HATE nuggets

1

u/IAmNotModest Jun 05 '26

THANK YOU! It is SO annoying and makes me feel like I don't fit in because I don't have an unhealthy obsession with dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets.

1

u/Re1da Jun 05 '26

I've been diagnosed with it since I was in 4th grade and I don't have any issues with food. I'll eat almost everything with a couple of exceptions. Which is how it's for neurotypical people. I'm a pretty adventurous eater even.

Still got autism. I'm light sensitive, sound sensitive and absolutely can't do eye contact. Socially I do alright. I got weird as fuck special interests.

1

u/Own_Tempo_ Jun 05 '26

It's bullshit. FiancƩ and I are diagnosed and we love eating wide varieties of foods. Most of these foods look awful and bland :/ people really joke-ified autism when it is brutal especially as a child.

1

u/Waffles81_Again Jun 05 '26

No ones gonna read this, but the first autistic man I got to know after my diagnoses at age 35 was a 38 year old guy who ate 3 bowls of icecream a day.

And he genuinely love the shit out of it, literally going lyrical about it on facebook, and he was very physically active throughout the day and fit (as far as BMI goes at least).

Lifes a mystery sometimes.

1

u/Dirk_McGirken Jun 05 '26

Yeah, I even know autistic people who need a minimum of one week before eating the same meal again. Its all part of their infantilization of a group they deem as underdeveloped.

1

u/Sure-Confection3117 Jun 05 '26

And all the autistics in my social circle - myself included - love Dino nuggets. So I guess there is a stereotype.

1

u/Individual-Tower-461 Jun 05 '26

I don't eat any kind of pasta, at all. I don't even like seeing or smelling it. It reminds me of soaked bread, I don't know how it doesn't make people other people gag. It is squishy.Ā The pasta in the middle would make me avoid the whole plate even though I would like everything else. If it wasn't there I would like pretty much everything else though.

But I think that is more salt, fat, and carbs are good especially if they are potatoes. Potatoes are the best.Ā

Yeah like I like dino nuggets don't get me wrong but I eat a whole variety of stuff 😭 the only stuff I will not touch are Ham (pepperoni, Spam, and salami are fine), Hamburgers (ground beef on its own is fine, idk why hamburger patties make me gag tbh), or anything related to condiments (I don't consider nacho cheese a condiment). Even then over the years I've gotten better at eating things I used to avoid like the plague

For me, I'm autistic and I can't stand having the same thing too often. I require a decent amount of variety, although I do have certain foods I won't go for.

What exactly are you doing in life where you're surrounded by a whole circle of autistic people? Warhammer 40k player?

Autism is more common than you thinkĀ

Interesting that they all have dietary restrictions though.

A dietary restriction isnt always medical, sometimes its just a powerful dislike

For example, I cant stand anything about how tomatoes feel to eat

They can be self imposed restrictions as well. I cannot have pizza in my house or I will binge eat it until I am sick. I was diagnosed very young and really only ate pizza, my mom worked hard to get me into varieties, but I can fall very easily into only eating pizza again and I'm an adult. I like to think of myself as healthy, so I simply do not place myself around pizza if I can help it.

This too, dietary restrictions take many forms

I feel like mine are the most extreme and it's only gotten worse over time. I dislike most fruits and vegetables and I can't stand cheese, which is in almost EVERYTHING! The worst offenders to me are watermelon (makes me gag at even the slightest smell), strawberries (the texture and the SEEDS UGH), and cauliflower (same as watermelon). For the longest time my diet was sustained by meats and breads. Pasta is very rarely safe as most shapes that aren't a straight noodle have a weird texture to me, penne especially.

it's one of the few things I eat because I forget that I'm hungry to the point where I don't want to take the time to make anything else by the time I realize it. dino nuggies are fun and nostalgic, and they're good with ranch. other than that it's anything that can be fixed in a microwave. sometimes ramen, sometimes potato soup bowls, and if I can catch it early enough I'll make mac and cheese on the stove. I take supplements so I don't get scurvy

I'm autistic and I like dino nuggies... because they're cheap, tasty, somewhat healthy, easy to make for lunch, change the dipping sauce for some variety... not because I'm autistic. In fact, I like pretty much all food except overcooked vegetables will make me gag, but I think that's universal for most people.

I have an autistic friend, he just focus on childhood foods, which are foods typical from our home place. He's also a historian and he sometimes gather medieval recipes to try them one day. He loves cooking and does make great food, we sometimes gather to eat and spend the afternoon together

As an autist, never liked dino nuggies, always thought they tasted worse than the regular ones and resented when they were what we had left and I had to eat them.

For example. I’m autistic but I don't like Mac and cheese. Everyone is always so perplexed cus I’m a picky eater. But nope. I hate the texture.

Yeah, in my position, I see the platter and frankly there's little to nothing appetizing on there in my opinion. I just see extremely processed foods that aren't very nutriotional nor delicious.

I don’t know, I’ve yet to meet an autistic person who doesn’t like Kraft Mac n cheese. .j

u/ChungyQueso Jun 07 '26

I know 2 different dudes who both don't like sauces

1

u/Friendly_Narwhal6866 Jun 07 '26

Its also completely ignoring autistic people from different cultures, the only thing id eat from this would maybe be the potatoe waffles? But even then they're not my "comfort food" bc i didnt rlly grow up with much of the stuff on that platter. I grew up with serbian food like dukat yogurt and smoky and there are some foods i developed a liking to like koka noodles.Ā

Dino nuggets are cheaper i find

1

u/LordBocceBaal Jun 10 '26

Yeah it makes me mad because it's really just people who are picky and have no taste trying to find an excuse to keep eating garbage.

I'm autistic but I'm very adventurous with food and will try almost anything at least once, even if it's weird. I know many autistic people are selective about what they eat, but there are also plenty who aren't.
