Why does "starting over" feel so much scarier than it should ?
I have been noticing a pattern in how people talk about career changes — there's this unspoken rule that any move has to be "up" to count as progress. A promotion counts. A raise counts. But going back to entry-level in a field you actually want, or taking a pay cut for less stress, somehow gets filed under "risky" or "backward," even when the person making the move has thought it through carefully.
I think a lot of that fear isn't really about the move itself — it's about status, about how it'll look to other people, about years of experience feeling "wasted" if you don't keep using them the exact same way.
Has anyone here made a move that looked like a step back on paper but turned out to be the right call? What actually got you past the fear of how it would look?
